OPENING

Ezekiel, an Israelite priest and prophet who was taken to Babylon among the first wave of captives from Judah in 598 b.c., and a younger contemporary of Jeremiah
Fee, G.D. & Stuart, D.K., 2002. How to read the Bible book by book: a guided tour, Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan.
His prophetic activity was from around 593 to 571 B.C.
The kings of Judah made some bad political choices in the struggle between Egypt and Babylon over supremacy in the area, Nebuchadnezzar eventually laid siege to Jerusalem
King Jehoiachin, most of Jerusalem’s prominent people, including Ezekiel’s family were taken into exile and was placed in a refugee settlement south of Babylon near the Kebab River
Apparently many believed this exile was only a temporary blip on the screen of their glorious history as God’s people
But Jeremiah had already informed the exiles in writing () that they were going to be there for the long haul.
5 years later Yahweh called Ezekiel to be a prophet primarily to the exiles in Babylon
His book contained a series of prophecies announcing the fall of Jerusalem, including the departure of Yahweh, followed by Israel’s eventual restoration with the return of Yahweh
Content: a series of prophecies announcing the fall of Jerusalem, including the departure of Yahweh, followed by Israel’s eventual restoration with the return of Yahweh
He emphasizes the inevitability of the fall of Jerusalem because of her sins, specially idolatry

And then the Prophet Ezekiel was shown a vision of the third Temple in 572 BC, just years after the First Temple was destroyed and before the second temple was built (show image of temple)
Though the destruction of the second Temple occured in 70AD, a third Temple has not yet been constructed
Some other time we will take a look on the things we should learn about the third temple
Meanwhile, what stood out from Ezekiel’s vision of the third Temple is the water coming out from the threshold of the Temple
Ezekiel 47:1–2 NIV
1 The man brought me back to the entrance to the temple, and I saw water coming out from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar. 2 He then brought me out through the north gate and led me around the outside to the outer gate facing east, and the water was trickling from the south side.
Less than 700 years after, John made the same prophecy in Revelations 22:1
Revelation 22:1 NIV
1 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb
Revelations 22:1
Interesting question to find out the answer to is, which will come first? The completion of the Third Temple, or the Second Coming of Christ?
It started from a small stream that goes deeper and deeper as it flows all the way to the Dead Sea
The water flowing from the temple gives life and renews the land of dry, lifeless wilderness approaching the salty waters of the Dead Sea
Ezekiel seems to envision a river of life that heals the waters of the Dead Sea and turns the wilderness into a lush orchard
After about half a kilometer the water was Ankle deep
They measured another thousand cubits, 1 cubit is about 0.5 meter, about one a half forearm, and it was knee deep
They went on measuring another thousand cubits and it was waist deep
They measured another thousand cubits, but what started just as a small stream then became a river that was so deep that they couldn’t cross
Ezekiel 47:3–5 NIV
3 As the man went eastward with a measuring line in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits and then led me through water that was ankle-deep. 4 He measured off another thousand cubits and led me through water that was knee-deep. He measured off another thousand and led me through water that was up to the waist. 5 He measured off another thousand, but now it was a river that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough to swim in—a river that no one could cross.
The deeper it goes, the more fish it yields
Same is true with our faith. The deeper our faith gets the more fish and fruit we will yield
We were made to enjoy God and we must enjoy Him forever
The deepest longings of our heart are satisfied when we partake of His life and fulfill His purposes
We are most satisfied when we do what we are created to do
When we walk in obedience to Him, we overflow with His love
Being a part of God’s family and sharing the life of Jesus with others is our highest purpose and the place where our hearts comes alive
Growing deep and yielding fruits is what makes up the Joy of Jesus
From both of these prophecy from Ezekiel and John we could see two things
First, water… and secondly, is its depth…
Water is the source of all life, and going deeper is symmetrical to producing more..
ILLUSTRATION: Spiritual Appetite

Spiritual Growth

One night, a mother fixed a special meal for her family: turkey with mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, green beans, cranberry sauce, and apple pie for dessert. It was everyone’s favorite meal, especially when it came at a time other than Thanksgiving. The aroma filled the house, and as the children came in from playing they could hardly wait for dinner to begin. The last child appeared only a few minutes before dinner time and sat through the meal without eating, even though he especially loved those foods. Why? Because he had filled up on peanut butter at a friend’s house. In settling for something good, he had lost his appetite for the best.

The same applies to our spiritual appetites. Some people don’t have much of an appetite for spiritual truth because they have satisfied themselves with lesser things.

Isaiah 55:1–3 NIV
1 “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. 2 Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare. 3 Give ear and come to me; listen, that you may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David.

Yahweh’s blessing is likened to the renewing power of water
Likewise, the promised salvation provides satisfaction for the exiles’ spiritual needs
Notice in verse 3 is says, “come to me”, “listen” and that “you may live”
Growing deeper in your faith to Christ do not just end on “coming to Him”, we also have to listen to what He says… then we may live..
What steals your appetite from gaining better things for your spiritual nourishment?
What does it take to gain that craving for incremental growth? And what are you going to do about it?

Some years ago, a study was done by an agricultural school in Iowa. It reported that production of a hundred bushels of corn from one acre of land required 4,000,000 lbs. of water, 6,800 lbs. of oxygen, 5,200 lbs. of carbon, 160 lbs. of nitrogen, 125 lbs. of potassium, 75 lbs. of yellow sulphur, and other elements too numerous to list. In addition to these ingredients are required rain and sunshine at the right times. Although many hours of the farmer’s labor are also needed, it was estimated that only 5 percent of the produce of a farm can be attributed to the efforts of man.

So it is in spiritual realms: God causes the growth (1 Cor. 3:6–7)

What steals your appetite from

ONLY GOD CAN MAKE ME GROW

When Paul wrote about church leadership in Corinth, he said..
1 Corinthians 3:6–7 NIV
6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. 7 So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.
Paul uses an agricultural metaphor to explain that different leaders have different roles in the growth of the church
Paul was responsible for founding the Corinthian church (1 Corinthian 2:14)

Since these ministries are interdependent, each one is important
“Watered” referes to the instruction of the church community ()
But it was God, and and still is God that causes things to grow
God is the source of maturity in the faith
Pastor Justin is an encourager, Mike is a teacher and our Apprentice Youth Pastor Ritchie is a servant
We may have different “Methods” but we all have the same “Mission”
Our ministries are interdependent on each other, and each one of these ministries are significantly important
When Paul enumerated the various gifts of the Holy Spirit he said..
Romans 12:6–8 NIV
6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
You may receive most of the help you can get from your Pastors and your Elders, but God is the source of growth and maturity in the faith
Regardless of how long you’ve been a christian, the question is..
From the scale of 1 to 10, how mature are you in your faith? How would you think God is going to take your faith to its next level?

When James Garfield, later to become President of the United States, was principal of Hiram College in Ohio, one father asked him if the course of his studies could not be shortened so that his son might be able to complete his studies in less time. “Certainly,” Garfield replied. “But it all depends on what you want to make of your boy. When God wants to make an oak, he takes one hundred years. When he wants to make a squash, he requires only two months.

Every growth requires time
Physical maturity is equated to time
Spiritual maturity is equated to obedience

I MUST GROW SPIRITUALLY OVER TIME

When the author of Hebrews spoke to presumably a house church in Rome, about the priesthood of Jesus and Melchizedek, they couldn’t understand
Melchizedek is a mysterious biblical personality
His name appeared in as the priest and king of Salem who blessed Abraham
The Author of Hebrews said
Hebrews 5:11–14 NIV
11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
Mike mentioned about christians who have not grown even over a period of time, he calls them “christian bonjings” (show image of man drinking milk)
It is a street lingo in the Philippines that may equate to a “special child” - in other words Autistic
Autism is defined as developmental disorder characterized with difficulties with social interaction and communication, and by restrictive and repetitive behavior
That instead of craving for more solid food, they crave for milk which is appropriate for infants
And the author said that being an infant is not acquainted with the teaching about “righteousness”
This expression could refer to sound ethical teaching, general christian teachings, the doctrines of righteousness through Christ, or Israel’s Scriptures
Though time is not the measurement of spiritual growth, time is required for any growth to take place
King Solomon beautifully said these words…
Ecclesiastes 3:11 NIV
11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 TEV
11 He has set the right time for everything. He has given us a desire to know the future, but never gives us the satisfaction of fully understanding what he does.
We are in different stages in our christian journey
We are in different levels in our spiritual maturity
Though in this church family, whoever you are, whatever you are, and wherever you may be in your walk with Jesus, and whatever is your reason for coming, you are welcome, and you have a place here, you belong here!
Because we believe that, together we can do better
Let me show you the concentric circles of commitment and see for yourselves where you are at this time (show the 5 Circles of Commitment)
Based on these Circles of Commitment, where are you in your walk following Jesus?
What would you do step up to the next level of your commitment to the Lord? And how do you plan to do it?

RECAP:

I SHOULD NOT BE SATISFIED WITH THE LESSER THINGS
ONLY GOD CAN MAKE ME GROW
I MUST GROW SPIRITUALLY OVER TIME

CLOSING:

The joy of the Lord is when He sees His disciples growing deep in their faith
Gaining intimacy on their relationship with Him
And doing the works of the ministry of reconciliation
Being an ambassador of the gospel to reconcile man with God
To bring people to Christ, and to be part of church growth

APPEAL:

Without straining your muscles, can I see the hands of parents in the house
As parents, I am confident that you will agree with me when I say that just like Jesus, it is our joy to see our children grow
To see them develop from being a boy to becoming a man, from being a girl to becoming a lady
We thank God for whatever He gives us
Either He gives as a special child, we thank Him for that too
Though, we are extremely grateful to have normal kids that grows normally over time
The Joy of Jesus is to see us all grow over time...
Let His love awaken you today
Maybe you’ve been snoozing around for extended period of time
Do not snooze forever.. Let the Lord’s love awakens you today!
