It isn't being destroyed in death that Jonah fears but rather the possibility of being abandoned in Sheol and separated from God forever.

Found in the belly of the fish. The fish's function - means of grace and mercy; the means by which he is delivered from death by drowning.
Distress, depressed, feeling alone and as though everything is caving in on him and he was far from God, Jonah found mercy in the belly of a fish where he reached out to God.
7 - When my life was overwhelmed, growing faint, wasting away, I remembered you, what you have done.
On the brink of his breath leaving him, his life/soul - mental state
