Introduction:

III.  What He Does

“He shall build the temple of the Lord.”

A.    Notice the emphatic manner in which the Lord states this: “He shall build the temple of the Lord; Yes, He shall build the temple of the Lord.” Why the emphasis? You remember in chapter 4 the Lord said Zerubbabel would build the temple. “The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; His hands shall also finish it.” Why the emphasis? The real temple, the spiritual temple, of which the physical temple foreshadowed, would be built by the Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 2.5

B.    Christ builds the church. Man cannot do this. There is no such thing as church planting by any man. We preach the gospel but the Lord saves and adds to the church. “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.” “Upon this rock I will build My church and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.”

  1. “He shall bear the glory.” As the builder, all the glory is due to Him because He does all the work. Revelation 5.1-10 Because He treads the winepress of God alone and bore the wrath of God. He purchases them all and builds them into his Church one stone at a time.
  2. “And shall sit and rule on His throne.” Hebrews 10.11-14 He in contrast sits after the offering of His sacrifice and all the other priests continue standing offering sacrifice after sacrifice. In other words, there is nothing accomplished with them, but it is finished with Christ. What is the implication concerning our sin? There is nothing else to be done except resting in Christ and upon His work that He has done. No better words to humanity came from the mouth of the Savior than “It is finished!” Hebrews 8.1-2 – This is the main point.
  3. Also, He shall rule. “The Government shall be upon His shoulders.” What government? The government of all history and all mankind that we considered under the Providence of God is upon Him. He shall rule. Take that in the context of the seals. Every time He opened a seal, another event of history would unfold. Therefore my life is on His shoulders. I can be comforted that every aspect, every detail, small and great, rests on His shoulders and He is able to bear it.

“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore…” We should remember by Whose authority we go forth. If we go forth and preach the Gospel, who can stop us? We go in the authority of the One who has been given a name above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow. To what extent? Those in heaven and those on earth and those under the earth. ALL Authority!

IV.  What the Result of His Work is

“And the counsel of peace shall be between them both.”

A.    This is between the two offices, Priest and King. The only way that there can be true peace is in this Man who is both Priest and King. Paul says in Romans 5.1, “We have peace with God.” When you look at all the bulls and goats that died and you see all the blood spilt, we can begin to understand the lack of peace. Hebrews 6.19-7-3

B.    Even those from afar shall come and build the temple of the Lord. Even those of us who were alien to the commonwealth of Israel having no hope and afar off have now in Christ Jesus been “brought near by the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace.”
