Notes & Transcripts

Secular:

  •  Mount Everest: 29,028 Feet
  • You have to climb to get to the base camp
  • First you need to apply
  • You have to be in excellent shape
  • You need to be prepared
  • You need to be guided
  • You need help along the way
  • 16 day trek… to 18,000 feet
  • Risks are very real!
  • For those who want to climb to the top… the above is true… plus they have to have an all-consuming desire to undertake this task….
  • It is not for the faint of heart….

Biblical:

"I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

Personal:

  • Stand back and look at a mountain and you are over come by its majesty….
  • Stand back and look at a mountain and you can be overwhelmed by its size…
  • Stand back and look and you may turn away…. Reluctant to see the view from the top….
  • Our faith walk can be like that…. We know from Scripture the relationship that God desires with us…
  • To be so close… so loving… so committed…
  • The saying goes “Anything Worth Doing is Worth Doing Well”…. Anything Worth Doing is Worth Doing the Hard Way.

Bridge:

  •  Intro….
    • Model A
    • Model B
  • Ask for a choice….
  • Satisfied with A
    • Easier
    • Less tension
  • Coerced to choose A
    • Pressure
    • Fit in
    • Tempted (by others on purpose)

Option one…

Pluralism…

    • Popular in Canada…
    • Fits with multiculturalism…
    • Deals in spheres of life…
  • Comments…. Benefits… Complications….
    • Non-conflict * Easy to preserve
    • Hard to maintain in  separation
    • Self-evaluative
    • Unique… low accountability
    • Low community
    • Low sense of Common good
  • Or do you choose B

Holistic

  •  Would see no lines between faith and other aspects of life
  • That faith actually supersedes… or consumes all other spheres…
  • Comments…. Benefits… Complications….
    • This is a life with Supreme meaning!!
    • Conflict
    • Hard to preserve… open… obvious
    • Can become tempered…
    • Can become hostile… others… and self
  • Is “B” possible
    • Where do we start from
    • Adam…
    • If “A” is self-centred
      • Our plan
      • Our spheres
    • Can we change it to “B”

MODEL A è TRANSITION è MODEL B

“There in lies the rub…”

We can’t…

  • Paul says…I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power.
  • Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 1For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
  • Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
  • First point… what about me?
  • It’s about a life sold out for Christ… Him first… but how?
  • What do I look like in relationship to Christ?

Ideal vs. Real

Tension…

    • What we want correctly do… is assess the ideal…
    • What should our walk of faith look like?

If we know… If we commit… How do we stay the course…

Alone… is ego-centric… no perspective…

Together… his body…

Promises to church…

One another statements…

Is Holistic possible?.... Together…

Is it possible alone?

What about us?

If we are called to be…. Holistic in our faith….

Then what?

How do we help one another…..
