He said to Him, "Lord, do You wash my feet?" 7 Jesus answered and said to him, "What I do you do not realize now, but you will understand hereafter." 8 Peter said to Him, "Never shall You wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me." 9 Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head." 10 Jesus said to him, "He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you." 11 For He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, "Not all of you are clean." 12 So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? 13 "You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. 14 "If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 "For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you. 16 "Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. 17 "If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.

    • Scripture talks about the need for washing or cleansing…
    • Psalm 51:2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity And cleanse me from my sin.
    • 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
  • Jesus possessed the power… the right to forgive Sin…
    • Matthew 9:2 And they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, "Take courage, son; your sins are forgiven."
  • It is through Jesus that we gain this washing… forgiving of sins and rebirth to new life…
    • Titus 3:5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy (as a Sacrifical Servant), by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Saviour, 7 so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

The Protest v. 6-11

6 So He came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, "Lord, do You wash my feet?" 7 Jesus answered and said to him, "What I do you do not realize now, but you will understand hereafter." 8 Peter said to Him, "Never shall You wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me." 9 Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head." 10 Jesus said to him, "He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you." 11 For He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, "Not all of you are clean."

  •  I mean come on….
    • Even if you do not fully understand who Jesus is (remember Peter is yet to deny him…)
    • How could you tolerate…
      • The lowliest of low servant jobs…
      • Clean your feet…
      • The dirtiest… lowest…. Job…
      • Taking the burden even slaves abhorred…
      • Demonstration…
        • Of Service…
        • Of Sacrifice
        • Of Sanctification… taking the worst…
  • The allusion to rebirth and continual need for forgives comes through…
  • Jesus said to him, "He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean”…
  •  Those who are reborn of the Spirit through the washing of regeneration… need not a bath… just to ask forgiveness… wash the lowliest parts… and we are completely clean…
  • 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
  •  … “Not all of you are clean…” the burden… the washing isn’t for those who resist… or turn against God… but for those who accept Jesus Christ… and are washed by the Spirit.

  • Despite our lowly state… Jesus Calls us… (Love Compassion)
  •  Despite our imperfections… Jesus Calls us…
  • Despite our unworthiness… Jesus Calls us… “Unless I wash you…”
  •  Christianity is not for the perfect… or the esteemed…
  • It is for those who recognize the need of a Saviour…
  • And are willing to allow Christ to minister in our Life!
  • No one is above being served by the Son of God…
  • The Protest… is a misunderstanding of the nature of God…
  • Not a Militant God… though He stood fast (temple…)
  • Not a Political God… though He wrangled with the establishment
  • A Servant God… despite our protest… Peter…Sword... Garden

The Pattern v 12-17

12 So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? 13 "You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. 14 "If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 "For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you. 16 "Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. 17 "If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.

  •  The Sacrifice of Service
    • Regardless of your estate…
      • Serve others…. (Christ-likeness)
      • Take their burdens as your own…
      • This isn’t a religion of superiority…

  • If the allusions to washing are in the text then there is ….The Offer of Sanctification
    •  "If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet”…
    • “having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word”
  •  Offer the truth of Jesus Christ…
    • Humbling serving and declaring his Word…
    • Truth to Heal
    • Truth to Save
    • Truth to Wash the Soul…
  •   The Pattern we are to follow is our Saviours…
    • As He preached the Word… (Wasn’t about clean feet)
    • Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, 15 and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel."
    • To see many Sanctified by God…
  •  The Pattern we are to follow is as Sacrificing Servants…
    • Kneeling down to the heavy burdened, the dirty and the lowly…
    • To have a servants heart…
  •   To follow our Saviours Pattern
