Firsts
Introduction –Do you remember your Baby’s First BDay – First cake, First real sugar rush, first playing with the boxes instead of the toys.
I. The First Sabbath, 2:1-3
II. The First Garden, 2:4-14
Remember the Bible starts with a Garden in Genesis and ends with a Garden in Revelation.
Genesis 2:4–14 ESV
4 These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens. 5 When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, 6 and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground— 7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. 8 And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10 A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Cush. 14 And the name of the third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
II.Garden A. The First Human
Adam Vs. 7
God shaped Adam. God made Him how He wanted Him. God made Adam in His own image.
Isaiah 44:24 ESV
24 Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb: “I am the Lord, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself,
God shaped Adam for a particular reason.
Isaiah 43:21 ESV
21 the people whom I formed for myself that they might declare my praise.
Is 43:
Isaiah 44:21 ESV
21 Remember these things, O Jacob, and Israel, for you are my servant; I formed you; you are my servant; O Israel, you will not be forgotten by me.
II. Garden B. The first Human breath
Genesis 2:7 ESV
7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
Do you remember your child’s first breath?
Do you remember that cry?
The moments from when the baby leaves the birth canal to the moment of the first breath are moments of tension. Why? Life is in the breath.
Illustration - We thought with our first that there would be an issue with her first breath and a whole specialist breathing team was in the room to attend to her first breath. The first breath of Adam came from the mouth of God.
The first breath of Adam came from the mouth of God.
There was no other creature that was made alive with the breath of God except for humankind.
No horse, porpoise, no bear or lion.
God breathed into humankind.
Screams - This one is special.
II. Garden, C. There is intentional design.
God formed Adam, like a potter creates the clay how he desires it.
Intimate Forming and Specific Purpose - Isaiah
Isaiah 44:24 ESV
24 Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb: “I am the Lord, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself,
Is 44
Isaiah 44:22 ESV
22 I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud and your sins like mist; return to me, for I have redeemed you.
Isaiah 43:21 ESV
21 the people whom I formed for myself that they might declare my praise.
;
Isaiah 44:21 ESV
21 Remember these things, O Jacob, and Israel, for you are my servant; I formed you; you are my servant; O Israel, you will not be forgotten by me.
Specific Purpose - Declare God’s Praise
Isaiah 43:21 ESV
21 the people whom I formed for myself that they might declare my praise.
II. D. The Tree of Life and Knowledge of Good and Evil
These trees were located in the middle of the Garden.
The Tree of life would literally cause one to live forever.
The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil was a tree of cursing.
-The knowledge of Evil comes with the experience of Evil.
-No one can understand evil and not experience evil except God.
-Certainly on the Cross with the guilt of sins of God’s People on Christ. Christ experienced evil without being stained buy it.
III. First Law, 2:15-17
Genesis 2:15–17 ESV
15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
Genesis 3:15-17
God made sin possible. God placed the means to sin before Adam.
Now Adam must choose to obey or sin.
Adam must choose to follow God’s rule as King over His life or be the own King of his life.
Application - Isn’t this what we must do every day?
Every day, set before us is a choice to lay down the crown or to wear the crown. To be King over our life or to allow God to be King.
Every day we are faced with the same choice as Adam.
We will deal in detail more in chapter 3.
IV. First Marriage, 2:18-25
Genesis 2:18–25 ESV
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” 19 Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
End of verse 20, last sentence is funny.
All the animals came and no animal could be a helper to Adam.
God proves to Adam that Adam has a need that only God can provide.
God filled this need in a pronounced way.
Special way. A way that Adam could not ignore.
Illustration - At the end of the day at Disney World in the Magic Kingdom where the Castle is everyone gathers at the castle and a very well orchestrated fireworks show goes off.
When the fire works are going off to the music you get this sense that this is a magic and special place. The fireworks to the loud music is the grand finale.
At the end of the day at Disney everyone gathers at the castle and a very well orchestrated fireworks show goes off.
Disney has invested tens of millions of dollars to get you to psychologically feel that.
Eve is the grand finale to the creation story.
Adam is shown his great need and God in His goodness gives Adam a wonderful gift.
Genesis 2:23–24 ESV
23 Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
God gives instructions for the first marriage. To be independent and united.
No longer dependent on Mom and Dad (forsaking mom and dad)
Clinging to each other - sticking to each other.
Becoming One Flesh -
A. Physical Intimate Union between the two & having children.
B. Spiritual and emotional closeness.
C. A commitment and closeness between husband and wife that is like flesh and bone.
V. Gospel - God gave us marriage for many reasons. Many good reasons.
A. The greatest reason we were given marriage was so that we would understand the result of the cross in our unity with Him.
Ephesians 5:31–32 ESV
31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.
John 17:21–23 ESV
21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.
Those in Christ are one with the Father and Son.
The Father loves His Children just as He loves His Son.
Marriage in the Garden points us forward to greatness of unity with have with God through Jesus.
Marriage in the Garden leads us to the display of love that God has for His people.
