Good News, Bad News

Romans 1:16-23

Secular:

  •  Telling a story…
  • Spouse decides to help…
  • Well last Tuesday we…
  • Any way… went to McDonald’s on our way…
  • Any way… we were going to the city for Josh’s…
  • Anyway… he played a great game…

  • Whether it is perspective… or facts… or whatever… when people don’t see things the same way… when we don’t see things clearly… the truth gets lost…
  • God has given the Good News… He has told us his story… both in the Word and in the World… the truth isn’t lost… some choose to see the story their way

Biblical:

Romans 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith." 18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-- his eternal power and divine nature-- have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

Personal:

  • I remember when my kids first brought artwork home…
  • I learned early on… don’t guess at what is in the picture…
  • The little artist’s view and mine were often very different…
  • Blue paint streaks… were a puppy of course…
  • A big green blob… the sun.. I should have known
  • Red circles... in the middle of the page… clouds… I knew that
  •  Mercifully we don’t have to interpret God’s story that way….

Bridge:

  • God has given the Good News… He has told us his story… both in the Word and in the World… the truth isn’t lost… some choose to see the story His way… other choose to see the story their own way

Body:

The Gospel of Christ

Romans 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."

  • Boldness…
  •  Odd don’t you think…
  • Not ashamed of the Good News?
    • We often forget the nature of the Good News
      • You are apart from God… you choose a path of sin
      • You need to pay a penalty… you can’t
      • You need to trust in the Son of God… who from initial appearances lost his battle… and wound up an a cross
      • We have all sinned… and come short of God’s expectation… We need to recognize that
      • We need to turn our lives… repent… from darkness unto light…. Self unto God
      • So we know there is a penalty that we can’t pay and accept Christ as our Saviour… or substitute… we need to accept that…
      • And we need to recognize that in all this we need to surrender our lives to Christ… to know the Christ of salvation - Saviour… is to know the Christ of obedience – Lord
      • And that takes some boldness…
    • Good News… with boldness
  • Power…
    • Power of God… Dunamis… dynamite
    • Omnipotent
    • Power to overcome the selfish nature of humankind…
    • Jeremiah 13:23 "Can the Ethiopian change his skin Or the leopard his spots? Then you also can do good Who are accustomed to doing evil.
    • Paul often says not me but in you Lord… cracked clay vessel… 1 Corinthians 2:1 And when I came to you, brethren, I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.
    • Good News… In God’s power…
  • Salvation…
    • Greatest manifestation of power in our lives…
    • Power to turn a heart… change lives
    • His salvation brings deliverance from… this perverse generation ( Acts 2:40), lostness (Matt 18:11),  from sin (Matt 1:21) and from the wrath of God (Romans 5:9), brings deliverance from their wilful spiritual ignorance ( Hos 4:6; 2 Thess 1:8), evil-self indulgence (Luke 14:26) and from the darkness of false religions (Col 1:3; 1 Pet 2:9)…
    • For those who believe it is truly Good News
    • Goods News… of Salvation

  • Faith…
    • the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile
    • “is believing…”
    • Trusting, relying on, having faith in…
    • Not just believing in…
    • Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;
    • Eternal life is both gained and lived by faith from God…
    • God not first ask humankind to behave…but to believe…
    • No baptism, no communion table, no good works… are our salvation…
    • No… it is about giving up our works… in favour of faith in Christ… trusting in his finished work
    • There is no boundary of race… the Good News crosses the boundary from the Jewish people to the Gentile world…
    • The Good News of faith is that it originates and sustains our salvation, our relationship with Christ, and it is from God.
    • The Good News of faith
  • Righteousness…
    • The Good News is that God imputes… or imparts his own righteousness to those who believe.
    • Philippians 3:8 More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, 9 and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith,
    • Muddy kids coming in the house… change’em before conversation… dinner…
    • Just as Abraham lived by faith lived in the righteousness of God… so we can as believers
    • The Good News is God bestows his righteousness on us… his children redeemed in his power for hi Glory…
    • Good News… the Righteousness of God
  • The Gospel… declared in boldness… in the Power of God, for the salvation of souls, through Faith… bestowing the righteousness of God
  • GOOD NEWS INDEED

The Wrath of God

From whom… to whom…

18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness,

  •  From God and heaven and things holy…
  • To those things of this world… of Satan that are against God. Against the opposition…
  •  We have talked of every choice being a choice for God or against God… the same is true with the sum of our lives…
    • Accept the Good News… for…
    • Reject the Good News… against…
  •  If our lives do not testify to truth…
  •  Our wickedness testifies to lies… (self, godless, idolatry)
  •  For that we face the Wrath of God.

Oh You Know Why…

19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.

  • It says all you reject God do so without excuse…
  • We love excuses…
    • They make life easier…
    • Sorry honey I didn’t hear you ask me to help clear the table…
    • Sorry dad I forgot to mow the lawn
    • Sorry son I forgot I had an appointment today
    • Sorry I just don’t feel up to going…
  • Because the reality of God is plain to them… they are without excuse…
  • No sorrys… no apologizes… no excuses…
  • Could Adam have gone to heaven… he was in communion with God…
  • God has made himself abundantly clear…
    • How do we know clear, clean water… free from impurities… holiness.
    • Majesty in the grandeur of creation
    • Tribes middle of nowhere…
      • Loyalty
      • Commitment
      • Courage
      • Mercy
    • Our world testifies to the very nature of God…
    • Explicitly, implicitly and intrinsically…
  • Maybe this is where the confusion comes from…
    • Too much human interpretation of nature and not enough seeing God…
    • Gives us all the New Age… bugs and bark folks
    • See enough of God to desire something… but through cloudy lenses…
  • People have desired God all of human history… everyone has seen his wonders…
  • The birth of a child, the structure of the Solar System, galaxy, universe… the beauty of a sunrise or a soaring mountain… the voice of God that drives compassion within us… love… mercy… courage…
  • The world is without excuse!

And what did you do!

22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

  •  With all the evidence for God… for all the attributes of our creator testifying within us and our world…
  • We create our God…
    • Our mind – our schemes, our plans, our intellectual prowess
    • Our creations – idols, statues, cars, money, status
    • His creations -  trees, moons, bugs and bark…
  • Doesn’t sound too swift to me…
  • We accept so little when we are offered so much…
  • And what did you do!

Conclusion:

The Gospel of Christ

Boldness…

Power…

Salvation…

Faith…

Righteousness… "The righteous will live by faith."
