3 For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith.
4 For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function,
5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
6 Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith;
7 if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching;
8 or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.
9 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good.

Several years ago, two students graduated from the Chicago-Kent College of Law. The highest ranking student in the class was a blind man named Overton and, when he received his honor, he insisted that half the credit should go to his friend, Kaspryzak. They had met one another in school when the armless Mr. Kaspryzak had guided the blind Mr. Overton down a flight of stairs. This acquaintance ripened into friendship and a beautiful example of interdependence. The blind man carried the books which the armless man read aloud in their common study, and thus the individual deficiency of each was compensated for by the other. After their graduation, they planned to practice law together.

The Detroit News carried a humorous little story about Bill Cosby's aged mother that illustrates how useless gifts are unless they are used. She had been raised in poverty, and the family had very little money as Bill was growing up. As a result, she never had modern conveniences and had gotten accustomed to doing things the hard way. When the children were old enough to get jobs, they often gave their mother appliances as Christmas gifts to make her life easier. But she wouldn't use them. Bill especially remembered that after a while his mother had two or three toasters. But she left them in their boxes and put them on top of the refrigerator. At breakfast she would still do the toast in the oven. If the boys protested, she would say, "Leave them on the refrigerator. I'm used to doing it the old way."

Why spiritual gift? Why do we need them?

3 how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard,

How shall we escape? Notice there is a decoration of salvation being declared.

Those who heard the Word
The Greek for Testifying means, to witness.
32 “And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him.”
32 ‘Therefore send to Joppa and invite Simon, who is also called Peter, to come to you; he is staying at the house of Simon the tanner by the sea.’
It is clear from these words of Jesus Christ and the Apostles that it is the work of the Holy Spirit to bear witness concerning Jesus Christ. We find the Holy Spirit's testimony to Jesus Christ in the Scriptures, but beside this the Holy Spirit bears witness directly to the individual heart concerning Jesus Christ.

How does God testify to us?

By signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit
God’s witness came through miracles performed alongside the gospel proclamation, therefore confirming it.
Now I want to deal with this quickly tonight.
12 The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with all perseverance, by signs and wonders and miracles.

Many use this text to suggest that signs and wonders and gifts were given only to affirm the ministry of the apostles and when the apostle left these gifts left as well.
12 For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ.
And when the apostle left these gifts left as well..
I would say yes, gifts (also, sign and wonders) were given to affirm the ministry of the apostles.
But the question becomes,
Were gift and sign and wonders just to affirm the ministry of the apostle?

Lets first go back to our text in Hebrews

Testify also is translated the word affirm.
Affirm what?

Lets look at what Paul tell the
Paul asked them 5 questions
1. Who tricked or deceived you?
2. Did you receive the spirit by works of the law or by hearing faith?
3. Are you so foolish?
4. Did you suffer?
5. Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of law or by hearing with faith?
lets pick up at verse 6-9
6 Even so Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.
7 Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham.
8 The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the nations will be blessed in you.”
9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer.

So Paul here is connecting the receiving of spiritual gifts to their faith.

Look what Paul tells the Romans in
11 For I long to see you so that I may impart some spiritual gift to you, that you may be established;
Established (or Strengthened)

He says I long to see you to impart or transfer spiritual gift.

14 Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbytery.
