Notes & Transcripts

Secular:

We need people of good character… leaders, people reflect God (the Standard) vs reflect the world…

Refute those of ignoble character…

  • Builder with a good reputation and good results
    • Bax Vintage… + 15,000 – 20,000
  • Builder with a shaky reputation and shaky results
  • Who do you want to hear from…
  • Who does God want you to listen to?
  • … Zip it! – let me know how to do it properly!

Biblical:

Titus 1:10 For there are many rebellious people, mere talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision group.

11 They must be silenced, because they are ruining whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach-- and that for the sake of dishonest gain.

12 Even one of their own prophets has said, "Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons."

13 This testimony is true. Therefore, rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith

14 and will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the commands of those who reject the truth.

15 To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted.

16 They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.

Personal:

  • Have you ever been trusted with a ‘very’ large sum of money or something very valuable to someone…
  • Even signing a mortgage document…
  • Big impact…
    • What if I can’t meet the obligation
    • What if I mess up… damage or loose
    • BIG responsibility!!

Bridge:

Paul is reminding us that we have been trusted as a leaders and as a whole church with a HUGE responsibility… preservation of the Word of God.

  • His Message
    • of Hope
    • Salvation
    • Guidance
    • Comfort

Huge responsibility:

1)      optimistic and pessemist alike…

a.       Share with a view of the reality of Heaven

b.      Huge Responsibility comes with the reality of Hell!!

Body:

1)      What’s the point:

a.       Mere claims do not make truth… truth

b.      Paul’s summary: Titus 1:16 They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.

c.       NIV 2 Corinthians 11:4 For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.

d.      Apart from Scripture… it is wrong

e.       Post-modern mindset… cannot undermine our faith

                                                              i.      You can believe what you want…

ii.      But you can not teach it here!!

                                                          iii.      ZIP-it!

2)      Many of you have trusted in Christ…

  • Trusting in His Word as objective truth
  • Trusting in the penalty for sin paid in his suffering
  • Trusting in the atoning work of his death
  • Trusting in the glorious hope of his resurrection

What an awesome relationship of trust…

Look at John…

Author of the 4th Gospel

Author of the Last Revelation of Scripture

Humble:

The Other Disciple: (8x) - Jn. 18:16, Jn. 20:2, Jn. 20:3, Jn. 20:4, Jn. 20:8, Jn. 20:25, Jn. 21:2, Jn. 21:8

  • Did not exalt himself
  • Maintained a low profile
  • Knew it was the message that was important… not the messenger

Beloved:

IV John 13:23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him.

NIV John 19:26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son,"

NIV John 20:2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!"

NIV John 21:7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, "It is the Lord," he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water.

NIV John 21:20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, "Lord, who is going to betray you?")

  • Best friend
  • Closest confident (12 /3 / 1)
  • Most trusted – message as disclosed nowhere else… (comp with Synoptics)
  • AT THE CROSS
    • Life in danger
    • Extreme pain
    • 7 sentences – one very important message
      • AND trusted with his family… take care of MOM

RELATIONSHIP OF TRUST – two-way street

n      Many of you have trusted in Christ…

  • Trusting in His Word as objective truth
  • Trusting in the penalty for sin paid in his suffering
  • Trusting in the atoning work of his death
  • Trusting in the glorious hope of his resurrection
  • MANY OF YOU HAVE TRUSTED IN CHRIST…
  • The question is can CHRIST put his trust in YOU!
    • Are you trustworthy in Christ’s eyes
    • Titus talks about those who ‘know’ about God yet are unfaithful to his message and his people
