All speak to this reality: Your Christianity must impact the way in which you relate to those within society and in the home. THIS IS NOT GIVEN BY WAY OF SUGGESTION BY PETER, BUT BY WAY OF COMMAND.
We are called to follow the model of Christ, resting our dignity in our devotion to Jesus Christ and not in how we are made to feel dignified or not by others. This is a form of suffering: not acting out when everything in you DESIRES TO!
What makes marriage difficult is the fact that it is the most intimate relationship we have, outside of Christ, and it the one that is depeendant on relational sacrifice. BUT THERE IS SOETHING MORE: IT IS THE RELATIONSHIP THAT WE ARE TO GUAGE OUR WALK WITH CHRIST ON.
In other words, how a husband relates to a wife and a wife to a husband dictates how they really are with the Lord. No other relationship is scritinixed in the same way. WHY
PETER SAYS THAT WE SHOULD CONDUCT OURSELVES IN HOLINESS SO THAT THE WORLD MAY SEE CHRIST IN US. WELL, MARRIAGE IS THE OICTURE GOD GIVES TO THE WORLD TO SHOW FORTH THE BEAUTY OF THE GOSPEL. THEREFORE, HOW WE RELATE TO ONEANOTHER IN MARRIAGE IS THE TRUTH ABOUT WHERE WE ARE WITH THE LORD.
PETER DOES NOT LEAVE US TO GUESS WHAT THIS IS, BUT ZEROS IN ON WHAT THIS MEANS FOR EACH: THE WIFE AND THE HUSBAND.
In Talking about marriage both Peter and Paul begin with the relationship by discussing the wife first
“Submission is best understood as “to voluntarily yield your rights or will to someone else’s wishes or advice, as an expression of love for that person” - Walls, D., & Anders, M. (1999). I & II Peter, I, II & III John, Jude (Vol. 11, p. 48). Nashville, TN: Broadman & Holman Publishers.
Walls, D., & Anders, M. (1999). I & II Peter, I, II & III John, Jude (Vol. 11, p. 48). Nashville, TN: Broadman & Holman Publishers.
NOTE THAT PETER’S STATEMENT ABOUT HAVING AN UNGODLY HISBAND DOES NOT JUSTIFY MARRYING AN UNBELIEVER. HE IS SAYING THAT THERE ARE SOME WHO CAME TO KNOW JESUS WHILE THEY WERE MARRIED. THEY MUST SEEK THE SALVATION OF THEIR SPOUSE- HUSBAND – NOT BY BADGERING THEM BUT BY THEIR CONDUCT; THEIR HOLY CONDUCT
· The example is not Jesus – but Sarah
· LET ME SAY A WORD HERE OF EXTREME IMPORTANCE
o Peter gives the model of Sarah because these are new believers
o But there is an implication here that Godly women should be hanging around Sarah type women
§ If your example is someone whose focus is on external beauty and the external things of this life then the counsel you get and the shape of your relating to your husband will be according to that way of thinking: the world
o Sarah’s
§ VALUE A BEUATIFUL SOUL
· PRECIOUS IN THE SIGHT OF GOD
§ HOPE IN GOD – that’s Peter’s point
· They don’t hope in beauty
· They don’t hope in being in authority
· They don’t hope in perishable things of this life
· THEY HOPE IN GOD AND THIS, ACCRODING TO PETER, IS BEAUTIFUL IN THE SIGHT OF GOD

1 Peter 3:1 ESV
Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives,
1
1 Peter 3:2 ESV
when they see your respectful and pure conduct.
1 Peter 3:3 ESV
Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear—
1 Peter 3:4 ESV
but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.
1 Peter 3:5 ESV
For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands,
1 Peter 3:6 ESV
as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.

1 Peter 3:7 ESV
Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

INTRODUCTION
EXPLAIN THE TEXT IN CONTEXT – BIG PICTURE
- Terms
- Etc..
BODY / APPLICATION

I. WE ARE BOTH RESPONDERS

A. The husband responds to respect

B. The wife responds to love/consideration

II. WE ARE BOTH IN NEED OF ONE-ANOTHER TO BE CHRIST LIKE IN OBEDIENCE

A. When the husband is respected he is encouraged to easily live in consideration / understanding

B. When the wife is considered and understood she is more inclined to respect and honor

III. WE ARE BOTH STILL ACCOUNTABLE FOR OUR RESPONSES TO UNGODLY ACTIONS OF OUR SPOUSE

The Absence Of Such Actions doesn’t Eliminate Personal Responsibility And Accountability To God

A. To have a wife that does not honor or respect is to live in the suffering of Christ who was not respected etc

B. To have a husband who does not care or under is to live in suff of Christ who the world rejected in their self-care.

IV. WE ARE, TOGETHER, A PICTURE THAT PROCLAIMS THE EXCELLENCIES OF GOD

IMPLICATIONS FOR SINGLE CHRISTIANS

1. SPEND THE BEST OF YOUR SINGLE YEARS WORKING ON YOUR OWN SOUL

a. Ladies: seeing beauty as God sees it
b. Men: seeing …

2. DON’T MAKE YOUR GROWTH IN JESUS DIFFICULT BY STARTING A DATING RELATIONSHIP WITH..

a. A Non-Christian

A non Christian is one who clearly does not believe

b. A Disinterested Christian

A disinterested Christian is one who says that they believe but show little to no interest in reflecting or honoring Christ in all of their life

3. DATE AND JOURNEY WITH ONLY THOSE WHOSE SOUL’S DIRECTION AND WHOSE SOUL’S DESIRE IS TO LOVE, LIVE FOR AND REFLECT JESUS
