The Question We All Must Answer

We just past Oct 31st on the calendar and that is a day where you dress up your children and go beg for candy…that stays in your house for months tempting the adults while the kids go off to school. During Halloween kids dress up as their favorite characters and sometimes put masks on. My son wanted to be Batman this year…which is cool we are Baptist not Wesleyan so no superman’s . while we were around town the kids would approach folks we knew and the adults would enviably ask “Oh who is this?” Masks cover up their true identity. All night poor Leland had to keep pulling his mask up to reveal himself…as if he had too.
One of the reasons that Luke wrote His gospel account was to answer the question “Who is This Man Jesus”. It was Luke's intention to reveal just who Jesus was to His friend Theophilus. In Chapter 9 Luke does Just that.
--Lets read Luke 9:18-22--

Observations from the text

this takes place after a long journey, long day, and performing a miracle
Caesarea philippi - about day and half journey to the north. it is located at the foot of Mount Hermon, where a sparkling stream rushes out of a cave it is the most eastern sorce of the Jordan river. it is considered one of the most lush and beautiful places in the Holy land. Caesarea Philippi hoowever was a pagan area. Shrines to other Gods were built there as well.
Jesus was Praying
THEME of the Text - Jesus is the Messiah the one true God!

The Questions

The disciples were sent out in to the world unfetter and unrestrained to carry the message of the kingdom. They had interactions will all sorts of people and these folks shared their opinions about who these ambassadors taught about. God is all about questions. it starts in Genesis...
Who do the crowds say that I am? - The answers are not correct…yet they are at least in the ball park. Folks were spiritually hungry and somewhat knowing that Jesus was something special, yet missing it by an eternity
Who do you say that I am - This is the inescapable question. The Christian faith goes beyond what others believe and it requires us to hold beliefs ourselves.

The Confession

The confession is the standard of Christian faith it states what someone believes. . everyone confesses something. for Christians we confess christ. Peter confesses Christ for himself and the other apostles.
Statement of Faith
It was made in confidence and with a submissive, repentant heart
This was revealed from God - This was not by human reason or Logic : Matthew account

The Charge

Sometimes we must shut our mouths and let things take its course. in all honesty these guys stayed with Jesus daily for years, seen miracles, heard his preaching…and now making this confession. How would the world respond to this ? Jesus tells them now is not the time. They didnt fully grasp the impact of that statment and wont until the death, burial, and resurrection.
Tell no one - time was not ready for public consumption
Must suffer and be killed - the world must see Him striking and humiliated, the world must see Him dead.
Raised on the 3rd day - Just as the world must see Him suffer and die, the world must see Him rise from the dead, the world must see Him as God the son. Either they accept Him as God or reject Him…They must see him

Application

You must know, understand, and accept that Jesus is the messiah. You must move from curiosity to commitment, from admiration to adoration. You must answer the question…Who do you say that I am?
