Response to the Word of God (part 1)
,
Our Lord engaged people through His teaching still. As we see from our text there was a great crowd came to hear Him. His manner of teaching was the pattern of the rabbis. They stood to read from the Word of God, but sat to teach. Our Lord’s way of teaching was often through the parable. There are some who have re-titled this parable as the parable of the hears or the soils. I prefer to use Jesus’ words. He called it the parable of the sower. A parable is different than an allegory, although some of them did have allegorical elements . The basic meaning is to cast along side.
In this text the crowd around was so great that He got into a boat and sat down. Jesus gave this parable in verses 1-9. Then verses 18-23 He explains it. That makes it special, He gives us the exegeses. Lets unpack the parable.
The first thing I want you to note is...
I. The planting method. Vs. 3 (ESV) “And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow.” The general way was a pathway through the middle of the farmer’s field. On either side of the path would plow up the dirt to prepare the ground to receive the seed. He would have a sack of seed tied around his waist. He would walk on the path casting seed from side to side. As we see from the parable that some went where he didn’t intended to, the very path he was walking on. If you have the NKJV or NASB you see that the parable begins with the word “Behold.” I can imagine that as our Lord sat in the boat as He gassed on the crowd His eyes up the hill to a farmer planting his field. One thing we know is that this was good seed. There was nothing defective about. While it was good seed the method made for some waste. When I was stationed at the National Parachute Center at El Centro, I would watch the farmers plant their fields. They had very sophisticated computer run machinery. While it was high tech, they still had a flock of birds that follow the planting to gather in a morsel of food. That was the case with this farmer also.
3 And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow.
