What’s needed?

Luke 10:38–41 NKJV
Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things.
This encounter comes on the heels of the disciples returning from a time of successful ministry
Jesus lays out a pattern for the success of ministry
Luke 10:18–20 NKJV
And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”
The focus wasn’t the success of the ministry but rather upon the one who enabled a ministry
The blessing of knowing the truth is the real focus
Luke 10:23–24 NKJV
Then He turned to His disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see; for I tell you that many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, and have not seen it, and to hear what you hear, and have not heard it.”
The joy of serving God is in the relationship not the business!!
It is in the fulfilling of the relationship that the work of God is manifest
Luke 10:25 NKJV
And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
Look at the question....what do I need to do!
Jesus asks him what do you think?
Luke 10:27 NKJV
So he answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’ ”
The manifestation of the relationship is love! “do this”
From love flow the works of God to a hurting world
Now the actions of the good samaritan
Luke 10:30–36 NKJV
Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?”
He didn’t tell them to have a fund drive, call EMS, or ask someone else
the command was…DO SOMETHING about it!
Now we come to our text
Martha is busy doing the work of the ministry
Did all those things need done? yes
Was there a timeline to meet? Yes
But in all the business she forgot one thing, how to sit in the presence of the Master
Luke 10:41–42 NKJV
And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
Worried - distracted, disquieted, turmoil, uproar
Satan want to distracted us with activity while God’s desire is that we quiet ourselves in His presence
Pod Spa - quiet our minds and Sppirits
How many times have we focused on the activity instead of the focus of the activity!
Isaiah 26:3 NKJV
You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.
Hebrews 4:1 NKJV
Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it.
In the preceeding verse we are told that the people in the wilderness did not due to disobedience or unbelief of what God instructed them to do
Hebrews 3:18–19 NKJV
And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
Hebrews 4:11 NKJV
Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.
True rest can only be found in obedience to His Word and command
Sometimes the things that distract us the most are of no eternal consequence!
One thing is needed - literally - necessary
That which should be or must happen
We see that jesus was surrounded by the needs of many but only focused on the issues His father showed him
Mary choose to spend her time in the most productive way
Jesus puts it well - this time will not be taken from her
It is in the presence of the Master that the plan and heart of God are revealed
It is there that God is able to sear His work securely in our hearts
Psalm 62:1 NKJV
Truly my soul silently waits for God; From Him comes my salvation.
As we move forward with the vision of the fellowship, success will be based upon our ability to sit quietly before the Father and then be obedient to the command of the King
