Introduction
Text
Luke 2:22–32 ESV
22 And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, 28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, 29 “Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation 31 that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.”
Transition
We’re told Simeon was righteous and devout (v. 25); and was a man of faith, for he “looked for the consolation of Israel,” a reference to faith in the promises of God about blessing Israel by the coming of the Messiah.
And Simeon was a man s filled with the Holy Spirit.
Three times, Luke speaks of the Holy Spirit’s work in Simeon’s life.

The Holy Spirit Empowers.

Luke 2:25 ESV
25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
Simeon was an example of what was to come.
He had a powerful anointing and manifest presence of the Holy Spirit.
Old Testament
Joel 2:28–29 ESV
28 “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. 29 Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit.
New Testament
Acts 1:8 ESV
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Simeon experienced the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.
Empowerment? Boldness, but also clarity (of God’s purpose and plan).

The Holy Spirit Reveals.

Luke 2:26 ESV
26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.
“Consolation” (Gk. paraklēsis, “consolation,” “comfort”) is the hope that God would come to rescue and comfort his people.
The Holy Spirit reveals God’s Word.
The Holy Spirit reveals God’s plan.
John 16:13 ESV
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

The Holy Spirit Leads.

Luke 2:27 ESV
27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law,
Simeon lived the Spirit-filled life.
His life was under the guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit.
Results:
The Holy Spirit empowers, reveals, and leads.
Why?
To enable believers to fully engage in Gospel ministry.
This ministry is all about proclaiming the truth of Jesus Christ.
Luke 2:28–32 ESV
28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, 29 “Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation 31 that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.”
Questions:
How does the life of Simeon help the believer understand the work of the Holy Spirit?
In the story of Simeon, how does the Holy Spirit work in relationship to Jesus Christ?
