Baptism’s Purpose

Baptist does not save you.

Acts 16:30–33 KJV 1900
30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. 32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. 33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.
What was the jailer’s question (v. 30)?
What answer did Paul and Silas give (v. 31)?
Look back at verses 32-33. When were the jailer and his family baptized (v. 33) in relation to their salvation (v. 31-32)?

Baptism does not wash away your sins.

1 John 1:7 KJV 1900
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
According to I John 1:7, only one thing is able to wash away sin. What is it?

Baptism does not earn you special favor with God.

Reason #1: Baptism was commanded by Jesus Christ.

Matthew 28:19–20 NASB95
19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Read Matt 28:19-20. After assuming that His hearers will “go,” what three commands did Christ give His disciples in these verse?

Reason #2: Baptism identifies you with Jesus Christ.

Galatians 3:27 KJV 1900
27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Romans 6:1–7 KJV 1900
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

Reason #3: Baptism is your testimony for Jesus Christ.

Matthew 3:6 KJV 1900
6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
Acts 2:38 KJV 1900
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Acts 2:41 KJV 1900
41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

Baptism’s Prerequisite

Acts 2:41 KJV 1900
41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
Acts 2:41 says, “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized.”
Acts 8:5–6 KJV 1900
5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. 6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.
Acts 8:12 KJV 1900
12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
Acts 8:12 says that the people believed Philip’s preaching.
According to these two verses what is the prerequisite for baptism?

Baptism’s Perversion

The baptismal regeneration error.

Acts 16:31–33 KJV 1900
31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. 32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. 33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.

The infant baptism error.

1 John 1:7 KJV 1900
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

The mode of baptism error.

Matthew 3:16 KJV 1900
16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
Mark 1:10 KJV 1900
10 And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:
Acts 8:39 KJV 1900
39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.
