Be What You Are Chapter One: A Child in God’s Family

That cynical deviser of definitions, Ambrose Bierce, once said that human birth was “the first and direct of all disasters.” I find no record that Mr. and Mrs. Bierce had a family, so we can’t blame what he said on their children. Perhaps it was the neighbor’s children that made Ambrose write such a depressing definition.

However, there is a sense in which human birth does share in a “great disaster” because each of us is born with a sinful nature. It doesn’t take new parents long to discover this sad fact about their little darlings.

The “great disaster” occurred when our first parents disobeyed God and plunged the whole human race into sin (; ). God made us in his image (), but we are also born in Adam’s image (); and that makes us sinners. The Old Testament story reveals how sinful we really are because it is “the book of the generations of Adam” (). When we were born, we were born into “the Adam family,” which is the same as saying, we were born with a sinful nature ().
However, there is a sense in which human birth does share in a “great disaster” because each of us is born with a sinful nature. It doesn’t take new parents long to discover this sad fact about their little darlings.
But that’s not the end of the story. The Old Testament may be “the book of the generations of Adam,” but the New Testament opens with, “The book of the generation of Jesus Christ” (). After our first parents fell, God in his grace started a new family! It is possible for you and me—Adam’s sinful descendants—to be born again and start a brand new life! The first Adam brought sin and condemnation into the human race, but the Last Adam, Jesus Christ () brought righteousness and salvation. The good news of the gospel is that sinners may be forgiven and experience the miracle of being born again into the family of God through personal faith in Jesus Christ

What about “Born of Water?” - spiritual rabbit trail
Some would say this refers to Physical birth…
their reasoning -
Water Baptism is mainly connected with the DEATH not birth
Our rejection of this claim
Our rejection of this claim
But doesn’t the fact that Jesus saying “BEING BORN AGAIN” imply a first birth?
Baptism in the NT while not implicitly connected to the word “BIRTH” is connected to “NEW CREATION” and “NEW LIFE”
We Say this refers to Christian Baptism
The Jews practiced Baptism before it was instituted by Jesus
Identified as washing -
The priest were called to Ceremonially cleanse the hands and feet before the performance of duties in the Tabernacle
a physical cleansing that was to be symbolic of Spiritual Cleansing
Identified at “NEW BIRTH” of Proselytizes
