7 The Lord says, “Sing with joy for Israel, the greatest of the nations. Sing your song of praise, ‘The Lord has saved his people; he has rescued all who are left.’
8 I will bring them from the north and gather them from the ends of the earth. The blind and the lame will come with them, pregnant women and those about to give birth. They will come back a great nation.
9 My people will return weeping, praying as I lead them back. I will guide them to streams of water, on a smooth road where they will not stumble. I am like a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my eldest son.”
10 The Lord says, “Nations, listen to me, and proclaim my words on the far-off shores. I scattered my people, but I will gather them and guard them as a shepherd guards his flock.
11 I have set Israel’s people free and have saved them from a mighty nation.
12 They will come and sing for joy on Mount Zion and be delighted with my gifts— gifts of corn and wine and olive oil, gifts of sheep and cattle. They will be like a well-watered garden; they will have everything they need.
13 Then the young women will dance and be happy, and men, young and old, will rejoice. I will comfort them and turn their mourning into joy, their sorrow into gladness.
14 I will fill the priests with the richest food and satisfy all the needs of my people. I, the Lord, have spoken.”
12 Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem! Praise your God, O Zion!
13 He keeps your gates strong; he blesses your people.
14 He keeps your borders safe and satisfies you with the finest wheat.
15 He gives a command to the earth, and what he says is quickly done.
16 He spreads snow like a blanket and scatters frost like dust.
17 He sends hail like gravel; no one can endure the cold he sends!
18 Then he gives a command, and the ice melts; he sends the wind, and the water flows.
19 He gives his message to his people, his instructions and laws to Israel.
20 He has not done this for other nations; they do not know his laws. Praise the Lord!
3 Let us give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! For in our union with Christ he has blessed us by giving us every spiritual blessing in the heavenly world.
4 Even before the world was made, God had already chosen us to be his through our union with Christ, so that we would be holy and without fault before him. Because of his love
5 God had already decided that through Jesus Christ he would make us his sons and daughters—this was his pleasure and purpose.
6 Let us praise God for his glorious grace, for the free gift he gave us in his dear Son!
7 For by the blood of Christ we are set free, that is, our sins are forgiven. How great is the grace of God,
8 which he gave to us in such large measure! In all his wisdom and insight
9 God did what he had purposed, and made known to us the secret plan he had already decided to complete by means of Christ.
10 This plan, which God will complete when the time is right, is to bring all creation together, everything in heaven and on earth, with Christ as head.
11 All things are done according to God’s plan and decision; and God chose us to be his own people in union with Christ because of his own purpose, based on what he had decided from the very beginning.
12 Let us, then, who were the first to hope in Christ, praise God’s glory!
13 And you also became God’s people when you heard the true message, the Good News that brought you salvation. You believed in Christ, and God put his stamp of ownership on you by giving you the Holy Spirit he had promised.
14 The Spirit is the guarantee that we shall receive what God has promised his people, and this assures us that God will give complete freedom to those who are his. Let us praise his glory!
1 In the beginning the Word already existed; the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 From the very beginning the Word was with God.
3 Through him God made all things; not one thing in all creation was made without him.
4 The Word was the source of life, and this life brought light to humanity.
5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out.
6 God sent his messenger, a man named John,
7 who came to tell people about the light, so that all should hear the message and believe.
8 He himself was not the light; he came to tell about the light.
9 This was the real light—the light that comes into the world and shines on everyone.
10 The Word was in the world, and though God made the world through him, yet the world did not recognize him.
11 He came to his own country, but his own people did not receive him.
12 Some, however, did receive him and believed in him; so he gave them the right to become God’s children.
13 They did not become God’s children by natural means, that is, by being born as the children of a human father; God himself was their Father.
14 The Word became a human being and, full of grace and truth, lived among us. We saw his glory, the glory which he received as the Father’s only Son.
15 John spoke about him. He cried out, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘He comes after me, but he is greater than I am, because he existed before I was born.’ ”
16 Out of the fullness of his grace he has blessed us all, giving us one blessing after another.
17 God gave the Law through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18 No one has ever seen God. The only Son, who is the same as God and is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.

1 The Lord says, “Here is my servant, whom I strengthen— the one I have chosen, with whom I am pleased. I have filled him with my Spirit, and he will bring justice to every nation.
2 He will not shout or raise his voice or make loud speeches in the streets.
3 He will not break off a bent reed or put out a flickering lamp. He will bring lasting justice to all.
4 He will not lose hope or courage; he will establish justice on the earth. Distant lands eagerly wait for his teaching.”
5 God created the heavens and stretched them out; he fashioned the earth and all that lives there; he gave life and breath to all its people. And now the Lord God says to his servant,
6 “I, the Lord, have called you and given you power to see that justice is done on earth. Through you I will make a covenant with all peoples; through you I will bring light to the nations.
7 You will open the eyes of the blind and set free those who sit in dark prisons.
8 “I alone am the Lord your God. No other god may share my glory; I will not let idols share my praise.
9 The things I predicted have now come true. Now I will tell you of new things even before they begin to happen.”
1 Praise the Lord, you heavenly beings; praise his glory and power.
2 Praise the Lord’s glorious name; bow down before the Holy One when he appears.
3 The voice of the Lord is heard on the seas; the glorious God thunders, and his voice echoes over the ocean.
4 The voice of the Lord is heard in all its might and majesty.
5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars, even the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes the mountains of Lebanon jump like calves and makes Mount Hermon leap like a young bull.
7 The voice of the Lord makes the lightning flash.
8 His voice makes the desert shake; he shakes the desert of Kadesh.
9 The Lord’s voice shakes the oaks and strips the leaves from the trees while everyone in his Temple shouts, “Glory to God!”
10 The Lord rules over the deep waters; he rules as king for ever.
11 The Lord gives strength to his people and blesses them with peace.
34 Peter began to speak: “I now realize that it is true that God treats everyone on the same basis.
35 Those who worship him and do what is right are acceptable to him, no matter what race they belong to.
36 You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, proclaiming the Good News of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.
37 You know of the great event that took place throughout the land of Israel, beginning in Galilee after John preached his message of baptism.
38 You know about Jesus of Nazareth and how God poured out on him the Holy Spirit and power. He went everywhere, doing good and healing all who were under the power of the Devil, for God was with him.
39 We are witnesses of everything that he did in the land of Israel and in Jerusalem. Then they put him to death by nailing him to a cross.
40 But God raised him from death three days later and caused him to appear,
41 not to everyone, but only to the witnesses that God had already chosen, that is, to us who ate and drank with him after he rose from death.
42 And he commanded us to preach the gospel to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God has appointed judge of the living and the dead.
43 All the prophets spoke about him, saying that all who believe in him will have their sins forgiven through the power of his name.”
13 At that time Jesus arrived from Galilee and came to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him.
14 But John tried to make him change his mind. “I ought to be baptized by you,” John said, “and yet you have come to me!”
15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so for now. For in this way we shall do all that God requires.” So John agreed.
16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he came up out of the water. Then heaven was opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God coming down like a dove and alighting on him.
17 Then a voice said from heaven, “This is my own dear Son, with whom I am pleased.”

1 Listen to me, distant nations, you people who live far away! Before I was born, the Lord chose me and appointed me to be his servant.
2 He made my words as sharp as a sword. With his own hand he protected me. He made me like an arrow, sharp and ready for use.
3 He said to me, “Israel, you are my servant; because of you, people will praise me.”
4 I said, “I have worked, but how hopeless it is! I have used up my strength, but have accomplished nothing.” Yet I can trust the Lord to defend my cause; he will reward me for what I do.
5 Before I was born, the Lord appointed me; he made me his servant to bring back his people, to bring back the scattered people of Israel. The Lord gives me honour; he is the source of my strength.
6 The Lord said to me, “I have a greater task for you, my servant. Not only will you restore to greatness the people of Israel who have survived, but I will also make you a light to the nations— so that all the world may be saved.”
7 Israel’s holy God and saviour says to the one who is deeply despised, who is hated by the nations and is the servant of rulers: “Kings will see you released and will rise to show their respect; princes also will see it, and they will bow low to honour you.” This will happen because the Lord has chosen his servant; the holy God of Israel keeps his promises.
1 I waited patiently for the Lord’s help; then he listened to me and heard my cry.
2 He pulled me out of a dangerous pit, out of the deadly quicksand. He set me safely on a rock and made me secure.
3 He taught me to sing a new song, a song of praise to our God. Many who see this will take warning and will put their trust in the Lord.
4 Happy are those who trust the Lord, who do not turn to idols or join those who worship false gods.
5 You have done many things for us, O Lord our God; there is no one like you! You have made many wonderful plans for us. I could never speak of them all— their number is so great!
6 You do not want sacrifices and offerings; you do not ask for animals burnt whole on the altar or for sacrifices to take away sins. Instead, you have given me ears to hear you,
7 and so I answered, “Here I am; your instructions for me are in the book of the Law.
8 How I love to do your will, my God! I keep your teaching in my heart.”
9 In the assembly of all your people, Lord, I told the good news that you save us. You know that I will never stop telling it.
10 I have not kept the news of salvation to myself; I have always spoken of your faithfulness and help. In the assembly of all your people I have not been silent about your loyalty and constant love.
11 Lord, I know you will never stop being merciful to me. Your love and loyalty will always keep me safe.
1 From Paul, who was called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from our brother Sosthenes-
2 To the church of God which is in Corinth, to all who are called to be God’s holy people, who belong to him in union with Christ Jesus, together with all people everywhere who worship our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:
3 May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.
4 I always give thanks to my God for you because of the grace he has given you through Christ Jesus.
5 For in union with Christ you have become rich in all things, including all speech and all knowledge.
6 The message about Christ has become so firmly established in you
7 that you have not failed to receive a single blessing, as you wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.
8 He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be faultless on the Day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 God is to be trusted, the God who called you to have fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ, our Lord.
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “There is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
30 This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘A man is coming after me, but he is greater than I am, because he existed before I was born.’
31 I did not know who he would be, but I came baptizing with water in order to make him known to the people of Israel.”
32 And John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from heaven and stay on him.
33 I still did not know that he was the one, but God, who sent me to baptize with water, had said to me, ‘You will see the Spirit come down and stay on a man; he is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’
34 I have seen it,” said John, “and I tell you that he is the Son of God.”
35 The next day John was standing there again with two of his disciples,
36 when he saw Jesus walking by. “There is the Lamb of God!” he said.
37 The two disciples heard him say this and went with Jesus.
38 Jesus turned, saw them following him, and asked, “What are you looking for?” They answered, “Where do you live, Rabbi?” (This word means “Teacher”.)
39 “Come and see,” he answered. (It was then about four o’clock in the afternoon.) So they went with him and saw where he lived, and spent the rest of that day with him.
40 One of them was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
41 At once he found his brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah.” (This word means “Christ”.)
42 Then he took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “Your name is Simon son of John, but you will be called Cephas.” (This is the same as Peter and means “a rock”.)

1 There will be no way for them to escape from this time of trouble.
2 The Future King The land of the tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali was once disgraced, but the future will bring honour to this region, from the Mediterranean eastwards to the land on the other side of the Jordan, and even to Galilee itself, where the foreigners live. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. They lived in a land of shadows, but now light is shining on them.
3 You have given them great joy, Lord; you have made them happy. They rejoice in what you have done, as people rejoice when they harvest their corn or when they divide captured wealth.
4 For you have broken the yoke that burdened them and the rod that beat their shoulders. You have defeated the nation that oppressed and exploited your people, just as you defeated the army of Midian long ago.
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; I will fear no one. The Lord protects me from all danger; I will never be afraid.

4 I have asked the Lord for one thing; one thing only do I want: to live in the Lord’s house all my life, to marvel there at his goodness, and to ask for his guidance.
5 In times of trouble he will shelter me; he will keep me safe in his Temple and make me secure on a high rock.
6 So I will triumph over my enemies around me. With shouts of joy I will offer sacrifices in his Temple; I will sing, I will praise the Lord.
7 Hear me, Lord, when I call to you! Be merciful and answer me!
8 When you said, “Come and worship me,” I answered, “I will come, Lord;
9 don’t hide yourself from me!” Don’t be angry with me; don’t turn your servant away. You have been my help; don’t leave me, don’t abandon me, O God, my saviour.
10 By the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ I appeal to all of you, my brothers and sisters, to agree in what you say, so that there will be no divisions among you. Be completely united, with only one thought and one purpose.
11 For some people from Chloe’s family have told me quite plainly, my friends, that there are quarrels among you.
12 Let me put it this way: each one of you says something different. One says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Peter”; and another, “I follow Christ”.
13 Christ has been divided into groups! Was it Paul who died on the cross for you? Were you baptized as Paul’s disciples?
14 I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius.
15 No one can say, then, that you were baptized as my disciples.
16 (Oh yes, I also baptized Stephanas and his family; but I can’t remember whether I baptized anyone else.)
17 Christ did not send me to baptize. He sent me to tell the Good News, and to tell it without using the language of human wisdom, in order to make sure that Christ’s death on the cross is not robbed of its power.
18 For the message about Christ’s death on the cross is nonsense to those who are being lost; but for us who are being saved it is God’s power.
12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he went away to Galilee.
13 He did not stay in Nazareth, but went to live in Capernaum, a town by Lake Galilee, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali.
14 This was done to make what the prophet Isaiah had said come true:
15 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, on the road to the sea, on the other side of the Jordan, Galilee, land of the Gentiles!
16 The people who live in darkness will see a great light. On those who live in the dark land of death the light will shine.”
17 From that time Jesus began to preach his message: “Turn away from your sins, because the Kingdom of heaven is near!”
18 As Jesus walked along the shore of Lake Galilee, he saw two brothers who were fishermen, Simon (called Peter) and his brother Andrew, catching fish in the lake with a net.
19 Jesus said to them, “Come with me, and I will teach you to catch people.”
20 At once they left their nets and went with him.
21 He went on and saw two other brothers, James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They were in their boat with their father Zebedee, getting their nets ready. Jesus called them,
22 and at once they left the boat and their father, and went with him.
23 Jesus went all over Galilee, teaching in the synagogues, preaching the Good News about the Kingdom, and healing people who had all kinds of disease and sickness.
