So the other day Arika and I were at KFC and this was probabably the most educational trips to a KFC I had ever taken,
Because at this KFC they had a giant picture of Cournal Saunders head on the wall and there were some things written next to the picture that talked about Cournal Saunders life
I did not even know he was a real person.
But I started reading about him and I learned that he actually had an extreamly hard life and had different challenges that made him feel like he had completely failed.
At one point he kept trying to get jobs at different places but every time he got a job it wouldn’t be to long until he lost it.
If you look up the life he lived he
And it happened so much that his wife ended up leaving him because of it.
He jumped fr
And it was not until the age of 65 that he ended getting into the chicken business and founding KFC
but really if you look at the lives of a lot of people who have made a name for themselves there is probably a story of failure that follows
JK rolling wrote a little book called Harry Potter and she submitted it to 12 publishing companies before one would actually give her a try
Walt Disney was labeled as lacking creativity at one of his first jobs he had
and not only that but he tried to create a character at this production company who was Micky Mouse but they rejected the idea because people do not like Mice so why would anyone want to watch a mouse.
But you know each of these people have a story where they failed multiple times before they were able to have a breakthrough.
and they had a little section of the wall of the restaurant that talked about his life.
And this was probably the most educational trip to KFC that I had ever taken because I did not even know that he was a real person.
and today what we are talking about is failure.
Because lets be honest each of us has failed at something at one point or another.
sometimes it is something small
We fail at a task
We make a mistake while trying to do something
If you are in school you have probably failed a test before.
But then there are big things that we fail
If you have ever lost your job chances are you may have felt like a failure.
One common thing that is common is for us to feel like we failed in our marriage.
Some of us we might like at some mistakes we go and say I failed my marriage
If you have ever been part of a ministry there will be times where a failure will probably occur
If you have ever been part of a minitry there will be times where a failure will probably occur
You know there are times I will probably do something and it might be failure
Sometimes you might try somthing and it might be a failure
Sometimes we fail to be obedient to God’s call on our life.
but heres what I want you to get because failure is probably going to happen, but we need to know how to respond to failure in order for us to keep moving and get past the failure we are encountering
So turn with me to
Because if you have failed
Because as I mentioned we are beginning our new series on David where we are looking at the life of David.
But one thing that is often overlooked is Davids story actually starts because of a failure of a guy named Saul.
Because Saul was actually the first king of the Israelite people
But before David is in the picture
and the Israelites were excited about having a king (Even though it might not have been what God wanted)
But this was there first king so you can imagine all of the hopes that they had for this man.
You can imagine the dreams they had built up for there new king Saul.
but the issue comes up that right before this passage we are in today God tells Saul what to do and Saul fails to be obedient to God.
king but right before the passage we are in today he had failed to be obedient to God.
and because of this God rejects Saul as king. Basically Saul is not worthy to be king anymore.
So the first king of Israel fails and now there is this question of what now?
What happens next?
Because this failure does not just impact Saul, but it impacts Samuel the prophet at the time and really it will eventually impact the entire nation.
So we will be looking at whats next here and really this passage shows us how we can respond to a failure
Wether its our fault or someone else’s.
So once again we are in and this is where David enters the picture. it says:
1 Samuel 16:1–13 ESV
The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.” And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. And you shall anoint for me him whom I declare to you.” Samuel did what the Lord commanded and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling and said, “Do you come peaceably?” And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.” And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
So like I said this failure happens and now we are starting to see some of the effects of that failure.
Because there is this prophet named Samuel, who was the one who anointed Saul to be king and Samuel is grieving.
And because of this grief he has really shut down because like we talked about he was one of these people who had these dreams for Saul and was excited to see the king he annointed do some great things.
and we see that these dreams get crushed.
But look what happens because in the middle of this God comes to him and says “Samuel how long are you going to grieve over Saul?”
basically how long are you going to grieve over what happened?
And notice God doesn't say that the grieving is bad
because this was a bad thing that happened, but he is saying when are you going to move out of this place where the grieving is paralyzing you.
“When are you going to turn from the past and thinking what could have been and start to look at how God is going to redeem this situation?”
and really that is the first thing I want us to get is when a failure takes place in our life there will be grief and heartache but we have to first off be willing to begin to make that turn from the past and move forward to how God is going to redeem that.
(INSERT ILLUSTRATION)
And look what happens next because God gives Samuel instructions to find the next king, but the issue is that Saul is still the king so Samuel tells God that Saul is probably going to kill him, if he finds out that he is searching for a new king.
So God gives him instructions on what to do and he actually goes to make a sacrifice with the family that the next King of Israel is part of.
and he will anoint the king around this time so Saul will not find out about it.
and so we get to verse 5 and Samuel is getting ready to make this sacrifice and it says that a man name Jesse and his family were invited to the sacrifice
so Samuel has his eyes
and so Samuel has his eyes out for the future king and one of Jesses son Eliab stands out to Samuel
and Samuel tells himself this is definitly the person that God wants to be the future king.
I mean from what we could guess he was tall, attractive, probably a very strong and was probably the oldest in the family which was a big deal during this time.
So Samuel is excited because he is going I did it! I found the next king!
But God tells Samuel something unexpected.
Because God tells Samuel hold on a second because you might have the idea of who is going to be the next king, but I do not look at outward appearance
But I look at the heart.
because in the past the king has
And you know often times we have these ideas after something goes wrong whats next, but a lot of times God has a different idea.
And we have to be open to what God wants.
And that is the second point, because once we decide its time to turn from the past and move to the future we have to be open to what God wants for us.
Because if we are not we miss out on what God can do.
I know none of you do this but its like if its ever early in the morning and your getting ready to drive but the windsheild is frozen over.
So instead of scraping the ice on the entire wind sheild you get a small portion cleared and start to drive (Like I said I am sure no one here does that)
But the issue is you might miss really important things while you are driving, that could result in an you missing a turn, an accident and even a death.
But when we are not open to where God is moving that same thing happens because we can miss where He is leading us and what ends up happening is we can become damaged from it.
And look what happens in the story because all of Jesses sons pass before Samuel and Samuel talks to God and goes “okay God I do not see the next king… So what no?!”
And so Samuel goes to Jesse and he goes are all of your sons here?
And Jesse says well I have my youngest one who is keeping the sheep.
And you know you can almost picture Samuels responce because in this culture the youngest child was not very signifigant, (I am the youngst so this hurts) and he was keeping the sheep which was a pretty lowly task
So you do not picture this kid who most people believe is 15 at the time being the next king.
But Samuel says get him because we are not leaving until we have this child comes.
But the thing is that really the whole family should have been there for this sacrifice, but Jesse figured it would not be a huge deal if his youngest son stayed to tend the sheep.
But we cannot withhold an area in our life even if it seems like something insignificant
because God might use that part of our life to do something amazing
Because when we just see something insignificant God might see something that can change lives.
And look because finally they get this child here (Which it must have been awkward because everything has been paused until this kid gets here.
And he finally gets here and the kids name is David.
and this time Samuel is not the one to say lets anoint him, but God tells Samuel anoint him as king.
And this is the last part I want you to get because in the Bible they anointed for a ton of different reasons
But if you look at why they anointed from a spiritual sense almost every single time they anointed a person it was to in general say God is setting this person aside for a specific purpose.
But the funny thing is if you look at this passage David gets anointed and he has no idea what that purpose is.
Only Samuel and God know that he is going to be the future king.
But David gets anointed and for David really he is just saying God whatever it is that you have planned for my life I am ready to be set apart for that purpose.
Wether it is to be anointed as a Shepard or a king I want to be set apart for your purpose.
And really this is the last part I want us to understand because each one of us has a purpose that God has called us to be a part of but we have to say yes to that purpose.
And today as we are finishing up I thought it would be nice to end our time in a way we usually do not.
And that is by ending our time together with a time of anointing.
And during this last song if you would like to be anointed I will be up front
And you know there is nothing special about this oil,
but it is a way to say God we are setting apart this situation, this failure, this health issue, my calling, my life, whatever it might be. I am setting it apart for you.
So during this last song if you would want to be anointed I will be up front and would be happy to anoint you.
