What is Baptism?

Family declaration

Matthew 3:17 ESV
and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Victory

Matthew 4:1 ESV
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
Matthew 4:11 ESV
Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

Ministry

Matthew 4:17 ESV
From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Calls Disciples
Preaches ( begins sermon on the mount)
Builds His church
So then when it comes to our own baptism, among other things it IS God publically declaring through the baptism that you are his own, and you are confessing the same; pledging to move forward in the victory won by Christ by being part of the ministry of one of His local churches.
Now, let us NOT follow the general pattern of starting with man and building toward God, but rather begin with God and reason down to us-ward!

Soli Deo Gloria -

Soli Deo Gloria -

Psalm 29:2 ESV
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.
Ascribe - to give - to regard or attribute
Genesis 2:24 ESV
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
Genesis 2:23 ESV
Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”
But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, Who is already sick and pale with grief, That thou her maid art far more fair than she:
Romans 11:33–36 ESV
Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” “Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?” For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

Solus Christus -

Isaiah 42:6–7 ESV
“I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness.
Acts 4:12 ESV
And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

He is saving the world -

Acts 10:34–35 ESV
So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.
Acts 10:42–43 ESV
And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”
Revelation 7:9 ESV
After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands,

1 Corinthians 12:27 ESV
Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.
1 Peter 2:5 ESV
you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

It’s about Obedience -

John didn’t understand why Jesus would ask this, nevertheless Jesus required his obedience.
Today we don’t always appreciate the importance of baptism, or of living out the pledge we made in our baptism; perhaps we don’t understand right now, but are we any less required to obey?
Consider the Obedience of Baptism;
Who among you needs to submit to Baptism and formal church membership, and have not?
I never discourage asking questions and desiring understanding, but I also know sometimes the Lord’s leadership is simply, “Let it be so now.”
Who among us needs to remember and recommit to the pledge of our baptism?
Did we not by entering the water declare that we are His and that the life we now live belongs to Him? Have we forgotten and acted as if our life was instead our own?
May God today impress upon us not only the beauty and power communicated in the ordinance, but specifically the Obedience of Baptism.
