Intro: Talk is Not Cheap

The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Eleven: Talk Is Not Cheap! (Colossians 4:2–9)

Never underestimate the power of speech.

A judge says a few words, and a man’s life is saved or condemned. A doctor speaks a few words, and a patient either rejoices ecstatically or gives up in despair. Whether the communication is oral or written, there is great power in words. I am told that for every word in Adolph Hitler’s book Mein Kampf, 125 persons lost their lives in World War II.

James 3:3–5 ESV
3 If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. 4 Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. 5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!
Prayer and worship are perhaps the highest uses of the gift of speech.
Warren W. Wiersbe, The Bible Exposition Commentary, vol. 2 (Wheaton, IL: Victor Books, 1996), 146.

Praying

Our praying must be faithful-2 Continue steadfastly in prayer
Our praying must be watchful-being watchful in it
Our praying must be thankful-with thanksgiving.
Our praying must be purposeful-3 At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word,

Proclaiming

1. It costs-to declare the mystery of Christ,
on account of which I am in prison—
2. It needs to be clear-4 that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak.
3. It requires us to walk in wisdom-5 Walk in wisdom toward outsiders,
4. It is time sensitive-making the best use of the time.
5. It must come with grace-6 Let your speech always be gracious,
seasoned with salt,
6. It requires knowing how to answer each person-so that you may know how you ought to answer each person
