Well this morning we continue on. Inner sermon series to the Book of Luke we're going to look at Luke chapter 13 verses 10 through 17 healing on the Sabbath. I want to start off this morning by telling you the main idea the main idea in this sermon is that God's kingdom has come in the words and works of God's King Jesus. God's kingdom has come in the words and works of God's King. Jesus way back in the fourth chapter of Luke Luke. We learned that Jesus came one of his purposes was to preach the gospel of the Kingdom. That's why he came his words were to convey the kingdom to his people. And then we saw and Luke chapter 11 that Jesus also came to demonstrate the kingdom not just to speak Words, which would convey what the kingdom was a bell, but I actually show people through his actions. And now we're in a section that since Luke chapter 12 verse 1 we have had a long stretch of Jesus teaching his disciples using his words for claiming the kingdom of God as well as longer stress of teaching that we worked through since Luke 12:1 comes to a point where Jesus is now going to do at work. He's going to through this work. See if people are getting the message about the kingdom of God. Today's passage in the miraculous work the Jews performs really as a a litmus test. For the people that is for the disciples in the crowds and the religious leaders to see if they are accepting his words and his works for what they are. So let's look at Luke chapter 13 verses 10 through 17 encourage you to open up your bibles are turning your devices with the Bibles in them and read along with me. You can also use the back of the insert where the passage is as well. Luke 13 10 through 17

Now he was teaching one of the synagogue's on the Sabbath and behold. There was a woman who had had a disabling spirit for 18 years. She was bent over and could not fully straighten herself. When Jesus saw her he called her over and said to her woman, you are freed from your disability and he laid his hands on her and immediately she was made straight and she glorified God but the ruler of the synagogue indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath said to the people there are six days and which work ought to be done come on those days and be healed and not on the Sabbath day. Then the Lord answered him. You Hypocrites does not eat of you on the side of the entire zotz or a donkey from the manger and Lead it away to water it. And Aunt not this woman a daughter of Abraham who sings Bound for 18 years be loosed from this Bond on the Sabbath day. Has he said these things all his adversaries were put to shame and all the people Rejoice that all the Glorious things that were done by him. Let's pray. Father God we thank you for your word. We ask for your help this morning Father God with you by your spirit. Help us. to be people who understand who perceive your kingdom through the words and works of Jesus. Apart from your spirit helping us. We can't accomplish that and so we asked for your help. I pray Lord that you would help me to communicate these truths. In a way that's helpful in that regard. We know that as we understand their minds and embrace with our hearts your truth that we will be transformed into the image of your son.

We long for that father God. Help us. We pray. Amen.

This work of Jesus is a demonstration of God's kingdom a demonstration of God's kingdom Jesus performs a miracle that portrays the reality of what he has been teaching since 12-1, even he's been teaching truths about the kingdom and now he shows people and people need to rightly respond to him because God's kingdom has come.

Accepting the kingdom is to repent and believe would result in Eternal blessing rejecting the kingdom. is to be against God and this will result in Eternal punishment. And we had a saying and all my football years getting frustrated with some people who could talk a good game, but couldn't play a good game. We would simply say don't talk about it be about it. Don't talk about it be about it. Now when Jesus talks he is being about it make no mistake and yet it's a glorious thing that he took many many opportunities to be about it to show people through his actions about the kingdom of God. Jesus demonstrates the kingdom through this miracle and verifies himself as the King by physically healing a woman under spiritual oppression. Let me remind you from early on in the Book of Luke. What is the kingdom of God? What is it when Jesus talks about the kingdom. What is he talking about? He of the kingdom of God is God's Royal Reign Over creation and his Redemptive rain through Jesus. We talked about the kingdom of God were talking last about an actual geography and more about his rule in his Reign now, he does Rule and Reign Over creation, but he redemptively were rains through Jesus Christ. The kingdom of God is eternal at the very center of Christ purpose. It's at the very center of the disciples purpose as well. It requires Revelation to see it and understand it and to accept it and for those who see it and understanding it accepted there is a great cost but an infinitely greater reward. For those who don't see it who are blinded by the evil one. They are in great peril. Apparel with Jesus has worn them recently in the Book of Luke. To understand and accept the kingdom Muse to understand and accept Christ by faith and repentance.

Play Soul from chapter 12 verse 1 to this point now. Jesus has given his teaching. He has used his words to convey the truth of the Kingdom that people might understand but now he works. He sees a woman bent over physically unable to stand up or straighten up. In Supernatural who understands that her infirmity is caused by a demon. He calls her over and says woman you are freed from your disability. He places his hands on her and she is healed.

This Woman's situation is a spiritual conflict that has physical ramifications for hair. Jesus notice when he talks about what he just did he says. Not this woman a daughter of Abraham whom Satan Bound for 18 years be loose from this Bond on the Sabbath day. The commentator said by identifying the woman's healing. As a deliverance from Satan Jesus list this miracle above the crossfire of legal debates and places it in the realm of Messianic expectations. As he healed this woman as he overcame, the devil's work in her life. He was declaring. I am the Messiah in that King that you have been waiting for. Reminds one of First John chapter 3 verse 8 we read the reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil and that's what he did. Again, well before John wrote this epistle Jesus made it clear that his destroying the works of the Devil by doing the works of God is a sure sign of the kingdom of God. We will read about it in Luke chapter 11 verses 14 through 20 where Jesus had exercised the demon. And people accused him of casting out demons by the prince of demons. Jesus refuted that saying that I can divide itself is laid to waste and he said however if I cast out demons by Beelzebub all by whom the archery deer Sons cuz I'm okay, but the kingdom of God Has Come And so is he is doing this work in front of the people? He's demonstrating the kingdom of God. You know made me think this week. How do I demonstrate the kingdom of God encourage you to ask yourself that same question even right. Now? How is it that you demonstrate the kingdom of God?

How there's not the expectation coming from me that you would heal people in this way. I think it's possible. And yeah twerk Hall to demonstrate the kingdom of God in our lives. How do you do that? If someone was to watch you for a week, will there be evidence in your actions? Would there be evidence in my actions of the kingdom of God? Well, Jesus healing is disabled woman was a demonstration of God's Kingdom. But it wasn't only that it was also a demonstration of God's compassion.

Compassion is seeing and sympathizing with someone else's suffering coupled with a desire to help soften translated Mercy in the Bible. Jesus was compassionate and merciful in freeing this woman from her disability. She had this for 18 years that's mentioned twice. We're to understand that this was a serious severe condition. When was she had suffered?

Furthermore as we talked about many times already Luke focuses in on a woman being healed. At a time when women were largely prevented from being able to care for themselves and were often neglected and Society in here. This woman has for 18 years dealt with this suffering.

And so he Jesus. Is compassionate sees her in her suffering and he loves her and he makes this clear and his rebuttal and rebuke of the leader of the synagogue. He says does not each one of you on the Sabbath on high heel socks or is Donkey from the major and Lead it away to water and not this woman a daughter of Abraham who Satan bound freaking Years be loosed from this barn on the Sabbath day. The religious service of Cross City of the day were willing to show compassion to an animal to a donkey.

On the Sabbath or to an AUX, but not show compassion to a human being to a child of God.

God is compassionate. It is Jesus did this miraculous work as he demonstrated the kingdom of God. He also demonstrated The Compassion of God. You know, it's interesting to go back to the Old Testament Deuteronomy chapter 5 verse 15 we read this. You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt? And the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm there for the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. Why were they to keep the Sabbath to keep the Sabbath because God had freed them from their bondage in Egypt. And your Jesus fries this woman from her bondage on the Sabbath and the religious leaders get upset. Compassion is acceptable on the Sabbath. We go back to that question. I asked you a few moments ago. How do you demonstrate the kingdom of God? I don't know how you answered that. But let me tell you one way you can demonstrate the kingdom of God by being compassionate and showing compassion to others. I want to encourage you Westland Alliance Church to keep persevering and compassionate works because you do them and I see it. I see how you help mothers with newborns by making them meals. I see how you come to the assistance of those who are sick ICU caring for the elderly. I see you giving to missions Endeavors like what Marcel and Kelly do that include Deeds of compassion to people you'll never meet I see you supporting the poor through work. We do at the food bank in the Northwest Community Center. I see how you support newcomers to Canada through the ESL Ministry into our sponsorship opportunities persevere in those works of compassion because they demonstrate the kingdom of God.

Let me say something else in regards to that. If you are suffering. If you're going through some sort of difficulty mentally emotionally physically economically. Let us know. Our people will help you and I know that we all have that sort of Desire not to be a burden on other people or not share with other people to difficulties were going through but if we don't know about it, it's hard for us to help you and your I know this church is full of people who will help if they're aware. Somiya courage is that you let us know Colossians 3 verse 12 says put on that is God's chosen ones. Holy and beloved compassionate hearts. Put on compassion. Compassion is the jersey of the disciple of Christ. How we demonstrate who's team world? That's not the only way but it's one of the ways until we see in this miraculous work a demonstration of God's kingdom, but he display of God's compassion as well. And really what this works to in this situation in Luke is a determination of people's response. Jesus has just given this long teaching on the kingdom of God. It's almost like this is a a challenge. I want to hear this woman. Let's see if they understand. Let's see if they're starting to get it. Sure, that was a demonstration of the kingdom of God. It was a display of God's compassion. But it also was used in this passage to determine how people would respond. I really don't want to look at four different responses this morning. And and that's about all we'll have time for is the response of the religious leader. There is a sponsor those who would reject the king. The Jesus was talking about in demonstrating. There's a response of those who rejoice and there's a response of the restored woman. The religious leader. We are told as indignant because Jesus heals I did Sonic synagogue on the Sabbath. He's too cowardly to adjust to address Jesus directly. And so he criticizes the people instructing them not to show up on the Sabbath in order to be healed interesting. There's no end indication that anyone showed up that day to be healed. The woman wasn't coming to Jesus to be healed call to her to heal her. And so were told the religious leader was put to shame. To not respond to the works in the words of God's Kings to put yourself in that place of Shame and in the passages, we just read before this one put you in that place of peril in a danger of Eternal punishment. Another question for us to consider this morning. Do we respond with indignation to the works or the words of God?

Is there any way in which to the works and words of God you respond with indignation? This is a warning to us. It's not a place we want to be we don't want to be like that religious leader who couldn't see the kingdom of God in this. freeing work of Jesus

but it wasn't just the leader who is thinking this way. We see that there were more people who rejected Jesus's message and in fact rejected his actions as well. We know this because Jesus responds to the religious leader in the pleural even say you hypocrite. He says you hypocrite there are other people thinking the same way. We're not it's not specified who they were. But ultimately, they claimed to be anticipating the kingdom of God waiting for God's Messiah waiting for God's salvation and yet in their midst the kingdom of God was shining forth In the words of Jesus as he taught in the actions of Jesus as he healed this woman. And yet they wouldn't recognize it. No, they didn't say they couldn't recognize it. They wouldn't recognize it.

Are there words of Jesus are there works of Jesus that you would deny or denigrate or speak poorly about?

If you are one who claims to be a follower of this Kang. Are the words of his that you ignore? Or words that he is done that you don't affirm.

We don't want to be included in that group of people who rejected the kingdom of God who were referred to as Hypocrites want to be people who affirm what the Bible says a Believer believes and what a Believer acts and lives out.

You're here this morning, and you're not a believer. You've never trusted in Christ for his salvation. You've never repented of your sins and believe in the Son of God and all who he is and all that he's done. I want to say to you that the gospel the good news of the kingdom is Christ ultimate work of compassion. In fact, it's the deepest work and most profound work of compassion that we will ever see.

Jesus who was God himself came to Earth came to the creation that had rejected their creator. Came and lived among of people who rebelled from the ruler of the universe.

And he lived a perfect life. It was perfectly obedient to his father. And that obedience to his father took him to the Cross where he paid on that cross the penalty for our Rebellion. He paid the punishment for our sins. He took upon himself the wrath of God and suffered in our place. He died and rose again. But that work that he did was the greatest work of compassion that will ever see the greatest work of someone seeing someone else in suffering. And Desiring to alleviate it and going to the ultimate end in order to do so until my question to you this morning as will you receive or reject that great work of compassion. That's a question. That's before you unbeliever this morning. And I would encourage you to receive it. If you don't understand what that means ask someone around you if they can't answer you though the point you to someone who can or go to one of the actors are coming speak to me or one of the other staff members would love to explain that to you explain how you can receive that great work of compassion of Jesus and not reject it. Those are two of the negative responses the religious leader in those who rejected what the kingdom was about the ones Jesus called Hypocrites, but there are others who had an altogether different response. We read that all the people Rejoice that all the Glorious things that were done by him. See some people were seeing and understanding the kingdom of God. Some people were moved by this compassionate man who free this woman from her 18 years of suffering these people Rejoice at what they saw. Brothers and sisters you should not be able to find anyone on this planet who rejoices more than us. Am I awesome in our church, but all those who follow Christ? We've seen the kingdom the demonstration of the Kingdom through his work has been made clear to us his word by the Holy Spirit has been made alive to us. We believed we ought to rejoice in the kingdom of God as it has been worked out through Jesus Christ. Until the word people who rejoiced who understood who saw the kingdom. In the fourth and final response, is that of the woman who was restored she had suffered for 18 years.

You know what? She suffered for 18 years was Andrew said she was still insured shall not Sabbath. 18 years of suffering didn't deteriorate her spirituality. She was still going to show up at the synagogue.

She glorified God when she was healed the 18 years of suffering and not stifled for Spiritual desire. She was still showing up. And when her time came she recognized the kingdom of God. Clearly understanding that it was Jesus who healed her but in doing so it was God who healed her. She responded by glorifying God to this compassionate Act of freedom.

Who should glorify God more than us? Each one of us who believes was a follower of Christ has received a greater emancipation even than this woman who was healed from 18 years of suffering. being freed from the bondage of sin that results in eternal life with God is the greatest Miracle the greatest work of compassion that can be thought of

Who should glorify God more than we do? Let me leave you with those two thoughts this morning as we consider this passage. Let's be people who rejoice in the kingdom of God and the great salvation. We have experienced and let us be people who glorify him as a result. Let's pray. Father God we thank you for your word. We thank you for this wonderful story that is conveyed to us in the Gospel of Luke. a demonstration

in word and in power of the kingdom of God and I pray you would help each one here this morning by your spirit to see it and to recognize and respond appropriately.

For the unbeliever that they would repent and put their faith in Christ. And for those of us who believe that we would look to our own lives and understand that we two are supposed to demonstrate the kingdom of God, by the way, we live and I That we would be people who rejoice in our salvation and people who glorify you in Christ's name. I pray amen.
