Acts 2:1-4

Acts 2:1–4 CSB
When the day of Pentecost had arrived, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like that of a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were staying. They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and rested on each one of them. Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them.
γλῶσσα
That’s what a word study looks like
Why does this matter?
Tongues of Fire symbolize the presence of the Spirit
See Exodus 3
Tongues in the mouth demonstrate the work of the Spirit
Note that the mouth is also compared to a fire in James 3:6
James 3:6 CSB
And the tongue is a fire. The tongue, a world of unrighteousness, is placed among our members. It stains the whole body, sets the course of life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
Fire can be helpful.
Fire can be destructive.
Likewise, the presence of God in our lives can be helpful
But He will absolutely be destructive of anything that is not of Him.
