It’s about time!

From waiting for the promise (Act1:1-8); to the ascension and the promise (Act1:9-11) to the appointment (Act1:12-26) now to Pentecost and the arrival (Act2:1-13). From wonder, to questions, to amazement, now we get to results in the passage before us tonight.
Due to the enormity and importance of the passage before us tonight, don’t want to get to much into an introduction. We will be looking at
The set up (prophesy fulfilled) (Act2:14-21)
Peter and the others apostles defend, remind
The delivery (the first gospel message) (Act2:22-36)
The instructions (and the promise) (Act2:37-39)

The set up (the prophesy fulfilled)

The people were amazed, perplexed, some mocked (Act2:12-13), but now it’s time to put into action what God prepared for the apostles to do. A good introduction, or doing some background work is good and that is where it starts in this section.
Acts 2:12–13 NASB95
12 And they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others were mocking and saying, “They are full of sweet wine.”
Amazed perplexed, talking, wondering, mocking and saying they were drunk. Why do you think they are assuming they are “full of sweet wine?”
OK, now you have the history leading to our passage may we look at the first section
Acts 2:14–15 NASB95
14 But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words. 15 “For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day;
Acts 2:16–17 NASB95
16 but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel: 17 And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams;
Acts 2:18–19 NASB95
18 Even on My bondslaves, both men and women, I will in those days pour forth of My Spirit And they shall prophesy. 19 And I will grant wonders in the sky above And signs on the earth below, Blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke.
act2:18-19
Acts 2:20–21 NASB95
20 The sun will be turned into darkness And the moon into blood, Before the great and glorious day of the Lord shall come. 21 And it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
Act2:20-
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?
so, they thought they were drunk, in the 3rd hour of the day (about 9am). Interesting fact that in most Jewish households there was no drinking at all except with meals and never in excess, much less at 9AM in the morning.
It was the Holy Spirit that was working in these people that made it amazing, perplexing and making others mock, but you see how Peter responds.
We see fulfillment of John Baptist prophesy (Mt3:11-12)
John Baptist said I baptize with water for repentance, but one comes who will baptize with Holy Spirit and fire.
Fire in the N.T. is judgment, you will see this illustration displayed throughout scripture.
We see the fulfillment of the prophesy of Jesus (Act1:4-5)
Stay here, wait, the promise from the Father is coming, you are about to be baptized with Holy Spirit!
From being given the Holy Spirit previously (Jn20:22); but now comes the empowering, the indwelling to help them to accomplish their task
We see the fulfillment of the power promised (Act1:8)
The promised power, and the direction of what they were going to be and do.
Now we get to the first preaching assignment by Peter (Act2:16)
A reminder of what Joel prophesied, saying this is that. So there can be no misunderstanding that this is the fulfillment of what Joel said.
The reminder of the prophesy of Joel (Act2:17-18)
If you want t read the prophesy itself, read Act2:17-18 again or you can burn to Joel2:28-32.
A reminder of a time of judgment and salvation was upon them (Act2:19-21)
This time of judgment was just a few years away in AD70, and there was much work to be done before that, so it was time to recruit more help than the Peter and the 11 could do.
This judgment is an escapable judgment (expand very briefly; it comes from our study in Mark previously)
Now maybe a couple of minutes regarding the outpouring that has happened and the Peter and the 11 are preaching about now>
This outpouring, this Holy Spirit Jesus spoke of to Nicodemus (Jn3:5)
Jesus told him one must be born of water and Spirit to enter the kingdom
This outpouring that Paul references to that washes and regenerates (Tit3:5-7)
This outpouring that Paul references to that washes and regenerates (Tit3:5-7)
Paul says it is the Spirit that washes and regenerates us, and that Spirit was poured out through Jesus Christ and makes us heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
This outpouring that leads to justification and sanctification (1Cor6:11)
Washed, sanctified and justified in the name of Jesus and in the Spirit of God (in other words the Holy Spirit)
This outpouring made it possible for us to be one body that drinks of the same Spirit (1Cor12:13)
1 Corinthians 12:13 NASB95
13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
Now that we know that this is that, this is the prophecies fulfilled now time to get the the message, the first gospel message proclaimed.

The delivery (first gospel message)

Most sermons have an introduction, but all sermons have a message and a challenge, or application, you know, what we are to do with the message we just heard. Peter and the 11 deliver the message and the instructions (application). Lets look at the message first.
Acts 2:22–23 NASB95
22 “Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know— 23 this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death.
Acts 2:24–25 NASB95
24 “But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power. 25 “For David says of Him, ‘I saw the Lord always in my presence; For He is at my right hand, so that I will not be shaken.
Acts 2:26–27 NASB95
26 Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue exulted; Moreover my flesh also will live in hope; 27 Because You will not abandon my soul to Hades, Nor allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.
Acts 2:28–29 NASB95
28 You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of gladness with Your presence.’ 29 “Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
Acts 2:30–31 NASB95
30 “And so, because he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendants on his throne, 31 he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that He was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did His flesh suffer decay.
Acts 2:32–33 NASB95
32 “This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses. 33 “Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear.
act2
Acts 2:34–35 NASB95
34 “For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says: The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand, 35 Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” ’
act236-37
Acts 2:36 NASB95
36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you crucified.”
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?
First is the attestation of Jesus (Act2:22)
what is the proof that was offered up? -Miracles, signs wonders
Then comes the attestation itself (Act2:23; fulfilling Isa53:10-12)
look at (v.23) there are important facts to notice
Predetermined plan, foreknowledge of God
You nailed to the cross and put him to death
Isaiah 53:10–11 NASB95
10 But the Lord was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand. 11 As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities.
Isaiah 53:12 NASB95
12 Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, And He will divide the booty with the strong; Because He poured out Himself to death, And was numbered with the transgressors; Yet He Himself bore the sin of many, And interceded for the transgressors.
By his suffering, by the death on the cross many will be justified.
Jesus death, and by whose hand could not be denied, and it was not by accident or by chance it all happened as a part of God’s predetermined plan.
Then comes the resurrection (Act2:24)
Remember there was a cohort of soldiers that was placed outside the tomb to prevent the apostles or anyone from taking the body of Jesus but still He rose, just as the prophesy said he would.
Then the attestation of Jesus vs. David (Act2:25-32)
We have the prophesy of David that speaks of the resurrection (v.29)
We have the prophesy of David that speaks of the resurrection (v.29)
Peter expounds it could not be about David since he is still in the tomb, Jesus is not and David was speaking of the Christ who was to come.
Look again at (v.32)
Acts 2:32 NASB95
32 “This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses.
Who raised Him up?
From the witnesses of the resurrection to the witness of the outpouring (Act2:33)
From the witnesses of the resurrection and the ascension to the witnesses who now see the outpouring that they both see and here.
To the exaltation told by David and quoted by Peter (Act2:34-35; Ps110:1)
Hey it was not David who was raised and ascended into heaven, it was David’s Lord!
And the the final nail, This one, is now Lord and Christ (Act2:36)
Acts 2:36 NASB95
36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you crucified.”
without a doubt, that you know that you know that you, this Jesus, God has made him both Lord (master) and Christ (redeemer). this is the one whom you crucified.
So now this leads to instructions and the promise

Response, instructions and promise

As mentioned previously all sermons have a message and an instruction, or challenge to it. that is where we are at now.
The conviction (Act2:37)
Acts 2:37 NASB95
37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?”
but you know we better keep in context look at it all together
Acts 2:37–38 NASB95
37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?” 38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:39 NASB95
39 “For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.”
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?
We have a compelling message that comes with conviction (v.37)
Faith comes by hearing (Rom10:17) they heard the message
Message of Jesus, now as both Lord and Savior (Act2:36)
expand on this for 1-2 minutes
They were pierced to the heart (Act2:37)
The conviction brought a question (Act2:37)
what was the question? - so in other words, what is the application of what you told us that convicted us
Now we get to the instruction, and many have taken, some at great lengths to say that is what it says but that is not what it means, and when you look at it in context it cannot mean anything else can it?
There is nothing we can do to earn our salvation, our salvation is not by our works in baptism it is God’s work and God’s gift that happens in baptism.
Acts 2:38 NASB95
38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
It is our love, our obedient faith that surrenders to the truth and do what the scripture tells us to do because of the conviction of our heart.
Obedient faith passages to consider
Christ is our salvation to those who have an obedience of faith (Rom1:5)
Romans 1:5 NASB95
5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name’s sake,
our faith
We become obedient from the heart (Rom6:17)
Romans 6:17 NASB95
17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed,
He is the source of eternal salvation to those who obey Him (Heb5:9)
Hebrews 5:9 NASB95
9 And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,
We are obedient because of our faith, not for our faith, our faith comes from hearing the Word not from the working of the flesh.
Have our souls purified when we became obedient to the truth (1Pt1:22)
1 Peter 1:22 NASB95
22 Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart,
1 Peter 2:22 NASB95
22 who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth;
It is a command, because of our faith (1Pt4:17)
For judgment is coming one day it is it eternally important that we know where we stand
1 Peter 4:17 NASB95
17 For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?
(Baptism saves picture here)
Peter answered the question that came from conviction, repent and be baptized.
Peter is fulfilling the great commission that was given to them and they were told to proclaim (Lk24:46-47; Mt28:19-20)
If you looked at Act22:16 you would see be baptized and have your sins washed away calling on His name.
You don’t call on someone you don’t know, you don’t believe in, so the challenge, the command is found in Act2:40 and results in 2:41
Acts 2:40–41 NASB95
40 And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation!” 41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls.
Be saved
They were baptized, they did not wait, delay, discuss, debate, they decided and they did.
The results, well the church was born! 3000 souls from Gospel message proclaimed.
