Col 3:10-17 KJV

10  And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

11  Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.

12  Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

13  Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

14  And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

15  And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

16  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

17  And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

10  And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

PUT ON – To put on a new garment, to clothe, to be clother

Gal 3:27 KJV

27  For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

      Rom 13:14 KJV

14  But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

NEW MAN – Refers to the NEW CREATION IN CHRIST

2Co 5:17 KJV

17  Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Eph 4:24 KJV

24  And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

RENEWED IN KNOWLEDGE – The true knowledge in Christ, as opposed to the false knowledge of the heretical teachers

RENEWED – An ongoing renewal

IMAGE – The new man is created after the Image of God.

This putting off the old man and this putting on of the new man took place at the moment the Colossian sinner put his Faith in Christ, which is the same with all Believers.  Every Believer is a new creation in Christ Jesus, meaning that all was carried out at the Cross, and the Believer’s Faith in the Cross, with the Holy Spirit then bringing about regeneration.

11  Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.

WHERE THERE IS NEITHER – In the renewed state, it cannot exist.  We are all equal in Christ

  • All prejudices disappear within the Christian
  • When we come to Christ, we enter into the Christ culture.

Gal 3:28 KJV

28  There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

12  Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

HOLY – Those set apart for God

BELOVED – The Saints are those who have been loved by God with the present result that they are the objects of His Love.  The God kind of love.

BOWELS OF MERCIES – A heart of compassion.  God has shown us mercy, we in turn should show mercy to others.

KINDNESS – Gentle, gracious disposition.

HUMBLENESS OF MIND – Refers to having a humble opinion of one’s self

MEEKNESS – Gentleness, mildness

LONGSUFFERING – Expresses patience under the ill-treatment of others

13  Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

FORBEARING – To bear with, endure

        FORGIVING – To grant forgiveness

QUARREL – Cause of blame, matter of complaint

EVEN ALL – According as, just as, in proportion as, in the degree that.

14  And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

Love is the outer garment which holds the others in their places

1Co 13:1 KJV

1  Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

15  And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

RULE – Be umpire

Whenever there is a conflict of motives or impulses or reasons, the peace of Christ must step in and decide which is to prevail

Disunion in the body is incompatible with the peace of the individual members.

BE THANKFUL – Show one’s self thankful

16  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

DWELL – To be at home

RICHLY – Abundantly

17  And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
