Title - Understanding Biblical Timelines

Objectives

Most Christians have no idea about God’s plan beyond the salvation of sinners and the coming of the Lord.
The Bible is a blueprint of God’s divine plan from beginning to end.
Looking at biblical timelines is looking at a calendar - you get to see the past, the present, and especially the future, and how they connect to each other.

The Need to Understand the times and seasons

God fulfills His purposes according to His own time.

Habakkuk 2:3 NKJV
3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry.

Man’s time is short and fleeting.

Isaiah 40:6–8 NKJV
6 The voice said, “Cry out!” And he said, “What shall I cry?” “All flesh is grass, And all its loveliness is like the flower of the field. 7 The grass withers, the flower fades, Because the breath of the Lord blows upon it; Surely the people are grass. 8 The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.”

It is time to understand the times and seasons

Note:
In Acts 1 Jesus told His disciples to not be concerned with the time and season of the kingdom’s arrival. But in the Book of Revelation, Jesus instructs John was told to not seal the words of this book of prophecy...
Acts 1.6-8
Revelation 22.10 - the time is near
Revelation 1.3 - the time is at hand
In 1 Thessalonians, Paul commends the church in their understanding of the times and seasons (1 Thessalonians 5.1-2)

The Two Ages

The Jews in the time of Jesus believed in the “two ages” idea. The first is the present age that is evil and corrupt, and the coming age which is governed by the Messiah.

The Present Age and the Coming Age

Jesus supported this view.
Matthew 12.32 - “this age” and “the age to come”
Luke 20.34-35 - “this age” and “that age”
Luke 18.29-30 - “this present time” and “the age to come”
The apostles believed and taught this view.
Ephesians 1.20-21 - God has placed Christ above all authority “in this age” and “in that which is to come”
The Present Age is…
2 Corinthians 4.3-4 - governed by the “god of this age”
Ephesians 6.12 - influenced and controlled by demonic spirits
Galatians 1.4 - evil, from which Jesus delivers us
The Age to Come is…
Luke 20.35-36 - eternal
Ephesians 1.21 - ruled by Christ

Christ’s Place in the Two Ages

Christ’s earthly presence announced the “last days” of the present age

Hebrews 1.1-2 - God speaks through the Son in the last days
Acts 2.14-17 - The Holy Spirit is poured out in the last days
[ILLUSTRATION - THE TWO AGES 2]

Christ was appointed to gather all things in the proper time.

Ephesians 1.9-10 - God’s plan was to bring all things back to Himself
Ephesians 1.19-22 - God raised Christ from the dead and placed Him above all authority and power “in this age” and “in the coming age”

Christ will terminate the Present Age and Usher in the New Age

Matthew 24.3 - this age will end when Jesus returns
see also - Matthew 24.29-31
Matthew 24.14 - the age will end when the gospel has been proclaimed into all the nations
Matthew 13.39-42 - there will be a separation between the good seed and tares
Matthew 13.47-50 - there will be separation of the wicked from the just

The Believers’ Place in the Two Ages

Believers are commanded to live right in the present age
Titus 2.12-13 - live soberly, righteously and godly
1 Timothy 6.17-19 - to be not haughty, give generously, store up for the age to come!
