1 Peter 1 :13-16

1PE 1:13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."n

NIV

1Pe 1:13  Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

1Pe 1:14  As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance,

1Pe 1:15  but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,

1Pe 1:16  since it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy."

ESV

KJV – gird up your loins – be sober

INTRO

Prepare your minds

Face the fact that you must control yourself

Set your hope on the future – begin with the end in mind – Jesus is coming back for us

Why should we be holy – because of the character of God – Holy and Just

Therefore – because of what has gone before … the grace, mercy given us manifest in our salvation – redeemed, justified, sanctified, adopted …imputed righteousness… now because of this

Prepare your minds for action

Our minds process – impacts our heart – what we think we become – our hearts can also cause us to think some unhelpful things – the realm of feeling and emotion – cause irrational thoughts

Realm of feelings – our minds help us to rule over feelings

We have a renewed mind and we constantly renew our minds – the word and fellowship helps

Jer 17 passage

Gird up your loins – tucked up robes ready to run! Just as the Israelites before they left Egypt – Ex 12:11

11 This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the LORD's Passover.

As followers of Christ we are filled with the Holy Spirit  - you are weak but the Spirit is strong –

Who are you listening to? Who shouts loudest? Listen to the Spirit of God!

Be ready to endure trials – the wind and the waves of life

Be sober-minded – be discreet – be watching

2 Cor 10: 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Be self controlled – be sober minded – accept responsibility for yourself – no excuses or blame

Set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Christ is revealed

2 Thess 1:7 and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels.

He will be revealed and arrive in Glory !

BEING VS DOING

Be do not do = we are we do not have to become  it is done! Finished

As obedient children

Conduct becoming children of the most high – some people do … but in this family we do not…

Do not conform to the evil desires -  of your bc days – bad company corrupts good morals

Conforming to a pattern that is contra to our flow – where are we going – an example is modesty in dress – behavior in public etc whose model are we following who do we model our lives on?

Our conformity is should be to Christ (opp to our former life which was:

Supremely selfish

Living for personal gratification

Free indulgence to appetites

Customs dictating not Christ his maker

Lived for fame and fortune wealth and recognition

We are called to be in this world but not of this world – resident alien – their should always be a component in our lives that is salty and light – different – it is only a faith filled live empowered by Holy Spirit power that we are able to do this.

But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all that you do

We ought to be like our father – you can tell children’s parents – their manner etc

“so the worship of Yahweh moulds the character of His professed friends into His image, and they become like him.”barnes

We are holy in Gods eyes but we are not their yet –

The already but the not yet fully – we are in a process of sanctification – we will one day reach that point – that will be in eternity

What stops me doing as I please –

Switching on my brain is the safeguard – will help us remember -

Conclusion

A perspective of heaven

Thought is required

Our minds need to be prepared for action

How do we do it?

My brother in law recently lost his house – was auctioned on Thursday – the subtle creep of debt –

Our mind and thoughts are the same in terms of our faith – the subtle creep of faithless pragmatism! The subtle creep of entitlement and the subtle creep of self indulgent pleasure!

What stops me doing stupid stuff…

A thinking through the consequences

Active and disciplined lifestyles

I wish I ate more healthily

I wish I was more disciplined in my study

I wish I was more systematic in my approach to life

We need to be active in fellowship

We need to be regular in our worship and gatherings in meetings

We need to be studying

Our exercise

Our relationships

Our devotional

The Gospel –

Look to His return – in Glory

Live like his children
