1 On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret,
2 and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets.
3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat.
4 And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”
5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.”
6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking.
7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.
8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”
9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken,
10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”
11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
This is not the first time they have heard Him teach. It is not the first time they have witnessed wonders.

Engage: Like them, many of us begin as sympathetic skeptics. We like what Jesus says. We understand His message. We are attracted to His vision. Yet we are still held fast by the realities and attractions of the world.
Expand: Peter and Andrew and the Zebedee boys had heard His words and seen His signs. Yet they still returned to the lake, their business, life as usual. Until that day that Jesus answered their unspoken questions about His identity, purpose, and call. That morning they went from

Excite: And today, this very morning each of us can inventory our own obedience, our own response to Him. You may have questions. You may curious but not convinced. Jesus is still extending the same invitation. Leave it all. Turn your life upside down, and I will give you greater-even eternal-purpose.

Cleaning Fish?
Cleaning Fish?
Since our model for understanding metaphors is what we know. Most of us think of sport-fishing, Zebco 202, warm summer evenings. We don’t think of commercial fishing. Peter’s family and the Zebedee boys were partners in a commercial fishing co-operative. That is the word Luke uses to describe their partnership. When I was a yout, fishing meant Grandpa and Grandma Clevenger. Everyone got to catch fish. Grandpa Clevenger gutted, scaled, or skinned them. Grandma Clevenger filleted them and cooked them. Because this is our model some of us get caught up in the wrong question:
How are we supposed to "clean" our catch? You don't have to!

Whiter than snow...Just like He cleaned us.

Don't get distracted. Don't get fixated on what is not essential. Will you follow Him, will you obey Him, will you fish for men...When Jesus comes to town.
