Recap

What happened last week?
Joshua led the people into the promised land. The Lord delivered Jericho into the hands of the Israelites by commanding them to march around the city for 7 days, and on the final day they blew their trumpets and shouted and the walls of Jericho fell. The Israelites killed every living thing in Jericho except for Rahab and her family, who had helped them.
The Israelites continue to conquer the land of Canaan that the Lord had delivered into their hands, and Joshua led them from victory to victory. When Joshua grew old, he gathered the people like Moses had and gave them one last encouragement before his death. Joshua reminded the Israelites of all the great things that the Lord had done on their behalf, and exhorted them to “fear the Lord and serve Him with all faithfulness… choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve… but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

Key Events

Joshua dies at 110
The whole generation who had lived under Joshua eventually dies
The new Israelite generation turns from the Lord and worshipped Baal, an idolotrous Canaanite god
Israel is conquered by Cushan-Rishathaim.
Israel calls out to the Lord
God raised up Othniel son of Kenaz to deliver them
Israel turns from God again, and is conquered by Eglon and the Moabites
God raised up Ehud, who killed Eglon and delivered Israel
Israel had peace for 80 years
Ehud dies and Israel again does evil in the eyes of the Lord
The Lord delivered Israel into the hands of the Canaanites
The Lord raised up Deborah, while the men of Israel were afraid to go into battle against King Jabin and his commander Sisera.
The Israelites routed the Canaanites and Sisera fled, and came across Jael, an Israelite woman, who allowed him to sleep and then killed him with a tent peg
Judges 4:21 ESV
But Jael the wife of Heber took a tent peg, and took a hammer in her hand. Then she went softly to him and drove the peg into his temple until it went down into the ground while he was lying fast asleep from weariness. So he died.
Judges 4:
40 years later, Israel again began worshipping idols, and the Israelites were attacked by the Midianites
God did not go into battle with the Israelites so they were defeated
Israel cried out who God, who raised up Gideon, a simple farmer, not an accomplished soldier, to deliver them.
As Gideon led the host of Israel against the Midianites, God said he had too many men, that the glory would not go to God for such a victory, so Gideon sent 22,000 men who were afraid home, and kept only 10,000.
God said there were still too many men, so He had Gideon test the men and send home all but 300.
Gideon led the 300 men against the Midianites, and the Lord was on their side, and they defeated them.
The Israelites had peace for 40 years
“No sooner had Gideon died” then ISrael began to rebel against God again, and He allowed them to be conquered by the Philistines
The angel of the Lord appeared to the childless wife of Zorah and told her that she would give birth, and that the child should be set apart for God’s purpose.
The child was born and named Samson, and his hair was never cut.
Samson doesn’t live a life like one chosen by God. He is brash and violent and wild and unbelievably strong.
Killed a thousand men with a Donkey’s jawbone
Eventually, Samson falls in love with a Philistine woman named Delilah, who convinces him to tell her the secret of his strength.
Samson’s head is shaved, and he is taken captive and blinded by the Philistines.
Samson repents and prays that God would give him strength one last time to have revenge on the Philistines, and he pulls down the temple on top of them, killing the rulers of the Philistines
The Israelites continue their pattern of compromise and idolatry followed by repentance and deliverance by their faithful God.

Where is Jesus?

The people continue to turn against God, but when they are oppressed and cry out to Him he raises another judge to deliver them from the consequences of their own sin.

Discussion

Now, you don’t have to share what, but have any of you ever felt like you were stuck in a pattern of rebellion? Or a pattern of destructive behavior? I know I have.
Would anyone like to share some of the thoughts that go through your head when we fall back into the same pattern of behavior?
What hope do we have when stuck in these patterns?

Where is Jesus?

The people of Israel continue to turn against God, but when they are oppressed and cry out to Him he raises another judge to deliver them from the consequences of their own sin. They keep falling into the same destructive behavior whenever the judge God has raised up to redeem them dies.
Jesus has redeemed us once and for all, we do not need continuous redemption over and over like the Israelites did. And we are never without our leader like the Israelites were, with our baptism we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit dwelling within us, and have hope of breaking these damaging cycles.
