Children’s Message:

Sing: King of Kings and Lord of Lords
or
Tell about boy David against Goliath and believing God’s Word though it doesn’t make sense or you can’t see how it could be true.

Introduction

It is hard to believe God’s Word. It often doesn’t make sense to us.
How will God resurrect the bodies of those who were burned to ash or lost at sea and eaten by the fish?
How can I really be forgiven by some words shared by another sinful person?
How can baptism really wash my sins away?
Why would God forgive me by faith when I haven’t done anything to change my life around yet? Shouldn’t I have to make up for my past mistakes?

1. Hearing but not understanding

Jesus foretells His death… again
(v.31) “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished.”
the Son of Man
written… by the prophets (, Is. 52-53)
“will be accomplished/finished/paid in full”
(v.32) For...
he will be delivered over to the Gentiles
and will be mocked
and shamefully treated
and spit upon
(v.33) And after flogging him,
they will kill him,
and on the third day he will rise.”
(v.34) “But they understood none of these things. This saying was hidden from them, and they did not grasp what was said.”
God’s Word always seems impossible before it comes to pass. (Luther)

Jesus’ death & Resurrection
John 2:22 ESV
When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
God’s Word seems ridiculous to reason.

Faith is believing
that God doesn’t lie, but will keep all His promises
that God is all powerful and He can accomplish all He says He will do, even if He has to create it from scratch
therefore, when God says...
I’m forgiven, I am
He is present, He is
My sins are washed away, they are
He is coming back, He is
We will rise again, we will

2. Blind but Able to See

The bold beggar
Begging for bratwurst: “The Evangelist is
Tetelestai!!!
God is different than us in His response
The seeing blind man: “Son of David”
John 19:28–30 ESV
After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
