- In a debate, the late Christopher Hitchens, a famous atheist apologist and author, denounces God for what he calls ridiculous thought crimes. That is, God is so cruel that he not only judges your actions, but he holds you to account for your thoughts and motives too.

And he’s right; God does do this. But what he sees as ugly and oppressive we should see as beautiful and merciful. God isn’t merely concerned with cleaning up our actions - He is interested in cleaning us from the inside out. We don’t want to be a people who simply don’t act upon our lusts, we want to be people whose chains of lust have been broken from the inside out. I want God to restrain my actions, sure. But I want God to change me.
