Violations of sacred time become desecrations of our most intimate relationships with God and one another. Hours and days, weeks and months and years are the very stuff of holiness. When time is desecrated, life is desecrated. The most conspicuous evidences of this desecration are hurry and procrastination. Hurry turns away from the gift of time in a compulsive grasping for abstractions that it can possess and control. Procrastination is distracted from the gift of time in a lazy inattentiveness to the life of obedience and adoration by which we enter the “fullness of time.” Both hurried grasping and procrastinating inattention keep us from honoring the holiness of time- Eugene Peterson

Charles Spurgeon, who used to say over and over to himself as he climbed the stairs into his high pulpit, “I believe in the Holy Ghost, I believe in the Holy Ghost.” Spurgeon wrote,
The gospel is preached in the ears of all; it only comes with power to some. The power that is in the Gospel does not lie in the eloquence of the preacher; otherwise men would be converters of souls. Nor does it lie in the preachers’ learning; otherwise it would consist of the wisdom of men. We might preach till our tongues rotted, till we should exhaust our lungs and die, but never a soul would be converted unless there were mysterious power going with it—the Holy Ghost changing the will of man. O Sirs! We might as well preach to stone walls as to preach to humanity, unless the Holy Ghost be with the Word to give it power to convert the soul.

Legalism is nothing but a leader’s way of avoiding suffering. “Rules were invented by elders so they could get to bed early! Men who speak endlessly on authority only prove they have none. Of all the liars in the world sometimes the worst are your own fears- Rudyard Kipling
When we start being too impressed by the results of our work, we slowly come to the erroneous conviction that life is one large scoreboard where someone is listing the points to measure our worth. And before we are fully aware of it, we have sold our soul to the many grade-givers. That means we are not only in the world, but also of the world. Then we become what the world makes us. We are intelligent because someone gives us a high grade. We are helpful because someone says thanks. We are likable because someone likes us. And we are important because someone considers us indispensable. In short, we are worthwhile because we have successes. And the more we allow our accomplishments — the results of our actions — to become the criteria of our self-esteem, the more we are going to walk on our mental and spiritual toes, never sure if we will be able to live up to the expectations which we created by our last successes. In many people’s lives, there is a nearly diabolic chain in which their anxieties grow according to their successes. This dark power has driven many of the greatest artists into self-destruction- Henri J.M. Nouwen, Out of Solitude: Three Meditations on the Christian Life
If you're not having major problems you're probably not doing major things- Greg Starling
I must say a word about fear. It is life's only true opponent. Only fear can defeat life. It is a clever, treacherous adversary, how well I know. When He was tempted to quit, He kept His eyes on us. When we are tempted to quit, we keep our eyes on Him- Rob McClure
Miracles are events - temporary, academic, and instructive. Our testimonies and relationships are lasting and real. We take our testimony with us to heaven, where the effect of a past earthly miracle is no longer necessary. Praising God for a miracle and remembering what he has done through the miracle, our change of heart, is far better than the miracle itself.
Miracles are not just for the affected person, but, for the witnesses. The witnesses, even those who hear the story, need to see and learn something. The miracle has a purpose far beyond the miracle. Miracles help us see Jesus, otherwise they do not happen. God knows when to intervene with an obvious, miraculous sign, and when we would understand him better without it- Brian Eddy
When Jesus said, "Follow me," he was not asking us to go somewhere, but to be with someone.
When we speak of ourselves, we speak of the name of God. When we are happy we say, “I am happy” and when we are sad we say, “I am sad.” When we tell others who we are we say, “I am” followed by our name. Why is that? It’s because our existence comes from His existence. Our “I am” only exists because of His I am. We only exist because of Him and only from Him do we find our purpose for existence.

The source of most of our unhappiness in life is that we listen to ourselves rather than talk to ourselves- Martin Loyd Jones
In the spiritual life God chooses to try our patience first of all by His slowness. He is slow: we are swift and precipitate. It is because we are but for a time, and He has been for eternity. Thus grace, for the most part, acts slowly. He works little by little. Sweetly and strongly He compasses His ends, but with a slowness which tires our faith because it is so great a mystery. We must fasten upon this attribute of God in our growth in holiness. There is something greatly overawing in the extreme slowness of God. Let it overshadow our souls, but let it not disquiet them. We must wait for God, long, meekly, in the wind and wet, in the thunder and the lightning, in the cold and the dark. Wait, and He will come. He never comes to those who do not wait. He does not go their road. When He comes, go with Him, but go slowly, fall a little behind; when he quickens His pace, be sure of it, before you quicken yours. But when He slackens, slacken at once: and do not be slow only, but silent, very silent, for He is God- Fredrick Faber

Depression is caring too little, anxiety is caring too much
Idolatry is a misplace expectation. Could our idol today be God himself - not the real Living God, of course, but the image we have of him based on our misplaced expectations in his name. The misrepresentation of God is the same as taking his name in vain, and that's become (or maybe always has been) the same as idolatry. We use God and "Christianity" as justifications - as stamps of approval for our own desires and expectations- Brian Eddy
David’s faith was nurtured in solitude, but strengthened in conflict, proven in hopelessness- Bill Wilson
Abortion does not preserve a woman’s life — it preserves her lifestyle – Matt Walsh
First-century Christians weren’t organized, had no building, and weren’t recognized by the government. In everyday society, they were basically considered a cult. For nearly three centuries, they remained utterly powerless – ostracized socially, persecuted politically, and tortured physically. And yet somehow their movement continued to grow. How do you explain that? Over the years, a number of historians have explored this phenomenon in detail. How could Christianity not only survive, but actually thrive? Their conclusion is nothing short of remarkable. While Christianity had none of the conventional strengths required to start a movement, its appeal and influence can be traced to an unexpected source: generosity. The hallmark of Christians in the first century was not their wealth. They had none. It was not their theology either. Their beliefs were so odd, religious people couldn’t understand them. What gave them leverage was their inexplicable compassion and generosity. They had little, but they gave. They received little compassion, but they were willing to extend what they had to other people. They were impossible to ignore- Andy Stanley
Emperor Julian described the followers of Jesus as, “Impious Galileans who not only feed their own poor but, ours also”
In a heartless world, the generosity and service of the first Christian generations was such a stunning contrast that people everywhere sat up and took notice. It is fair to speculate that Christian generosity and service did more to win people to the gospel of Christ than all the preaching that was done- Gordon MacDonald

‪Just as a hospital collects the sick under one roof and labeled them as such, the church collect sinners. Many of the people outside the hospital are every bit as sick as the ones inside, but their illnesses are either undiagnosed or disguised. It's similar with sinners outside the church. Churches are not, as a rule, model communities of good behavior. They are, rather, places were here I miss behavior is brought out in the open, faced, and dealt with.‬- Eugene Peterson

In New Testament history, the arrival of the gospel shook entire cities. Local power players trembled. People gathered in stadiums, screamed threats of lynching and the peace was a very much disturbed because their economy was being affected. Many turned from their fascinations with the occult; books were burned; those who traded in magic trinkets got very upset indeed. The faithful souls who were key in Biblical revivals usually became fugitives not lauded celebrities. If revival is what we need, then at the very least, we must not allow our hope of it to sanction laziness about what we are called to do to grab the world’s attention. Revival is a word that can be used as a trump card to allow us to be reluctant to reflect about what we should do, because all of our hope is centered on what God might possibly do- Jeff Lucas

Anxiety over relationships is the greatest single cause of human desperation. We never feel more lost than when we are alone. But we are never more vulnerable than when we are in relationship to another person

I have found that the most profound moments, the most life changing ones, are often not the ones you have to search for, not the ones you have to pay for, not the ones you have to plan or pursue or execute with perfection, but are more often than not the ones that happen oganically, right under your nose, orchestrated by the only one who can prick your heart and reveal something so profound in the least profound life moments of all- Erika Knight

This can only happen if man, of his own free will decides that he will let God in.- Temple Institute
Best-selling author Eric Metaxas wrote in the Wall Street Journal article “Science Increasingly Makes the Case for God” (Dec. 25, 2014): “In 1966 … astronomer Carl Sagan announced that there were two important criteria for a planet to support life: The right kind of star, and a planet the right distance from that star. Given the roughly octillion – 1 followed by 24 zeros – planets in the universe, there should have been about septillion – 1 followed by 21 zeros – planets capable of supporting life. … But as years passed, the silence from the rest of the universe was deafening. … As of 2014, researches have discovered precisely bubkis – 0 followed by nothing. …”. Eric Metaxas continued: “What happened? As our knowledge of the universe increased, it became clear that there were far more factors necessary for life than Sagan supposed. His two parameters grew to 10 and then 20 and then 50, and so the number of potentially life-supporting planets decreased accordingly. … Peter Schenkel wrote in a 2006 piece for Skeptical Inquirer magazine: ‘In light of new findings … we should quietly admit that the early estimates … may no longer be tenable.’ "As factors continued to be discovered, the number of possible planets hit zero. … In other words, the odds turned against any planet in the universe supporting life, including this one. … Today there are more than 200 known parameters necessary for a planet to support life – every single one of which must be perfectly met, or the whole thing falls apart. Without a massive planet like Jupiter nearby, whose gravity will draw away asteroids, a thousand times as many would hit Earth’s surface. The odds against life in the universe are simply astonishing. Yet here we are, not only existing, but talking about existing. What can account for it? … At what point is it fair to admit that science suggests that we cannot be the result of random forces? …”
Eric Metaxas ended: “Theoretical physicist Paul Davies has said that ‘the appearance of design is overwhelming’ … Oxford professor Dr. John Lennox has said ‘the more we get to know about our universe, the more the hypothesis that there is a Creator … gains in credibility as the best explanation of why we are here.'”

Nothing requires that God be gracious, not even His love. If grace is ever required, it is no longer grace. Grace cannot be required. If we merit it then it is no longer grace; if God is obliged to give it then it is no longer grace. When we think that God must be gracious, we confuse grace with justice. There is this really crazy, its cultural, its insane, there is this really weird thing, not just in evangelicals, but in the culture at large, that we somehow don’t want to tell our kids what to do, as if that will somehow suppress there inner being. That is the dumbest thing ever. You are the only one not telling your kid what to do. You are their parent and you are the only one not saying anything- Matt Chandler

You can outscore your opponent and lose and you can be outscored and win- John Wooden
According to Coach John Wooden, this poem was written by George Moriarty, a former major baseball umpire.
Sometimes I think the fates must grin as we denounce them and insist,
The only reason we can’t win is the fates themselves have missed.
Yet, there lives on the ancient claim – we win or lose within ourselves,
The shining trophies on our shelves can never win tomorrow’s game.
So you and I know deeper down there is a chance to win the crown,
But when we fail to give our best, we simply haven’t met the test
Of giving all and saving none until the game is really won.
Of showing what is meant by grit, of fighting on when others quit,
Of playing through not letting up, it’s bearing down that wins the cup.
Of taking it and taking more until we gain the winning score,
Of dreaming there’s a goal ahead, of hoping when our dreams are dead,
Of praying when our hopes have fled. Yet, losing, not afraid to fall,
If bravely we have given all, for who can ask more of a man
than giving all, it seems to me, is not so far from – Victory.
And so the fates are seldom wrong, no matter how they twist and wind,
It’s you and I who make our fates, we open up or close the gates,
On the Road Ahead or the Road Behind

Because heresies threatened the living apostolic message, it had to be recorded in a book to protect it from falsification. Every time I thought I was being rejected from something good, I was actually being redirected to something better- Steve Maraboli
The church began as a movement in Jerusalem, it became a philosophy in Greece, an institution in Rome, a culture in Europe, an enterprise in America.
Much of our culture has rejected the idea that God designed sex for the lifelong union between a man and a woman, and embraced instead the idea that it serves any purpose we want. Old rules are out; but that doesn’t mean that anything goes. Writing at the Gospel Coalition, Alistair Roberts lists what he says are the new laws of sexual morality.
1) It’s meaningless. Nothing partners do with one another relates to any higher order, nor is it regulated by any universal truth.
2) Anyone who says otherwise is infringing on your rights. Sexual inclinations are the core of who you are, and that means disapproval is discrimination.
3) Male and female are interchangeable, consent is the only ethical boundary, and no one type of relationship is more valuable than another. Transgress these new laws, and you’re in for it
The Church exists for nothing else but to draw men into Christ, to make them little Christs. If they are not doing that, all the cathedrals, clergy, missions, sermons, even the Bible itself, are simply a waste of time. God became man for no other purpose. It is even doubtful, you know, whether the whole universe was created for any other purpose. It says in the Bible that the whole universe was made for Christ and that everything is to be gathered together in Him- CS Lewis

Philosopher Erich Fromm said there are two societies today, one based on having and another one based on being. A society based on having focuses on things like property possessions even people. The one based on being focuses on their experiences. They derive meaning from sharing exchanging and engaging with other people. The conversation down the hallway goes like this. “We can’t bring that issue up because Mr./Ms. ‘I’m The Center of the Universe’ will get upset.”. The drama queens you dance around determines how far you go.. Sammy Salesman gets bent out of shape if reporting systems change. Dance around Sammy and, eventually, you end up in the dark.. The person you’re afraid to confront anchors your team.. Oh! We can’t change our delivery system because Susie Secretary will freak out. The team ends up serving Susie, rather than customers.. Weak organizations are governed by the preferences of those who can’t be upset.. The people you constantly comfort may be friends, but they are the enemy of innovation and excellence.. 1) To the older generation
Don't resent, fear or judge the emerging generation, believe in them. When you delegate tasks to the next generation you create followers. When you delegate responsibility you create leaders. If you're not dead you're not done. Be real, be yourself. Authenticity always trumps cool. You can either fight it or fund it.
2) To the younger generation
Employers said the greatest challenge of this generation is feeling entitled. We overestimate what God does in the short run and underestimate what he does in the long run. The older generation will allow you to influence them because you honor them. The younger generation doesn't honor older people because they feel entitled. This is the most cause driven, missions minded generation in modern history.

Patience is in the waiting. Waiting is waiting. Patience is what you do while you wait. Patience is not the ability to wait, but the ability to have a good attitude while you wait- Joyce Meyer
We spend a lot of time in our lives waiting because change is a process. Many people want change, but they don't want to go through the waiting process. But the truth is, waiting is a given—we are going to wait. The question is, are we going to wait the wrong or right way?
All of us will wait passively, or we'll wait expectantly. A passive person hopes something good will happen and is willing to sit around waiting to see if it does. After a short time, he gives up, saying, "That’s it! I've waited and waited and nothing's happened." The passive person has a lot of wishbone but not much backbone! The expectant person, on the other hand, is hopeful, believing the answer is just around the corner, due to arrive any minute. His belief is not a passive thing. His heart is full of hope, expecting his problem to be solved at any moment. He wakes up every morning expecting to find his answer. He may wait and wait, but suddenly what he’s been waiting for happens.- Joyce Meyer

The Seven Blunders of the World is a list that Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi gave to his grandson Arun Gandhi, written on a piece of paper, on their final day together, shortly before his assassination. The seven blunders are:

Commerce without morality.
Science without humanity.
Worship without sacrifice.
Politics without principle.
In 1887 Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh, had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years prior: "A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse over loose fiscal policy, (which is) always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to great courage; from courage to liberty; from liberty to abundance; from abundance to complacency; from complacency to apathy; from apathy to dependence; from dependence back into bondage”
2009 book, “Creating an Opportunity Society,” Haskins and Sawhill identified three crucial social norms: graduating high school, having a full-time job, and waiting until you’re 21 and married to have children. Christ did more in His submission as a lamb than He did in his leadership as a lion- TD Jakes
Assayas: The Son of God who takes away the sins of the world. I wish I could believe in that.
Bono: But I love the idea of the Sacrificial Lamb. I love the idea that God says: Look, you cretins, there are certain results to the way we are, to selfishness, and there's a mortality as part of your very sinful nature, and, let's face it, you're not living a very good life, are you? There are consequences to actions. The point of the death of Christ is that Christ took on the sins of the world, so that what we put out did not come back to us, and that our sinful nature does not reap the obvious death. That's the point. It should keep us humbled . It's not our own good works that get us through the gates of heaven.
Assayas: That's a great idea, no denying it. Such great hope is wonderful, even though it's close to lunacy, in my view. Christ has his rank among the world's great thinkers. But Son of God, isn't that farfetched?
Bono: No, it's not farfetched to me. Look, the secular response to the Christ story always goes like this: he was a great prophet, obviously a very interesting guy, had a lot to say along the lines of other great prophets, be they Elijah, Muhammad, Buddha, or Confucius. But actually Christ doesn't allow you that. He doesn't let you off that hook. Christ says: No. I'm not saying I'm a teacher, don't call me teacher. I'm not saying I'm a prophet. I'm saying: "I'm the Messiah." I'm saying: "I am God incarnate." And people say: No, no, please, just be a prophet. A prophet, we can take. You're a bit eccentric. We've had John the Baptist eating locusts and wild honey, we can handle that. But don't mention the "M" word! Because, you know, we're gonna have to crucify you. And he goes: No, no. I know you're expecting me to come back with an army, and set you free from these creeps, but actually I am the Messiah. At this point, everyone starts staring at their shoes, and says: Oh, my God, he's gonna keep saying this. So what you're left with is: either Christ was who He said He was the Messiah or a complete nutcase. I mean, we're talking nutcase on the level of Charles Manson. This man was like some of the people we've been talking about earlier. This man was strapping himself to a bomb, and had "King of the Jews" on his head, and, as they were putting him up on the Cross, was going: OK, martyrdom, here we go. Bring on the pain! I can take it. I'm not joking here. The idea that the entire course of civilization for over half of the globe could have its fate changed and turned upside-down by a nutcase, for me, that's farfetched

The devil has seldom done a more clever thing, than hinting to the Church that part of their mission is to provide entertainment for the people, with a view to winning them. From speaking out the gospel, the Church has gradually toned down her testimony, then winked at and excused the frivolities of the day. Then she tolerated them in her borders. Now she has adopted them under the plea of reaching the masses! ...In vain will the epistles be searched to find any trace of the 'gospel of amusement'. Their message is, "Therefore, come out from them and separate yourselves from them... Don't touch their filthy things..." Anything approaching amusement is conspicuous by its absence. "Fishing is a good metaphor for prayer. The unpredictablity of the element, its tempestuousness at times, its windless calm at others. And its depth, its vastness—the feeling that we're just skimming surfaces—that the mystery and marvel folds down into unfathomable and often unreachable dark- ness. The thrill when something—anything—takes the line, and the disappointment and often the mess when its not what you had hoped for. And always waiting.
"Prayer and waiting are intrinsically linked, joined at the hip. Prayer makes no sense apart from waiting. Prayer is about being made in the likeness of Christ. Conformed, reformed, transformed. If prayer was only about getting things—getting even, getting rich, getting well, getting justice—then we would call it something else. We have lots of names to describe the quest and method for getting those things: magic, medicine, capitalism, lobbying.
"But prayer is not about bartering and bargaining with God, haggling for the best deal; a pound of piety for remission of sickness. Prayer, at its heart, is about becoming like the crucified and risen Christ. And that is a work like wind carving stone. It is slow, painful, toiling work, rarely swift or easy. It is riddled with wrenching setbacks, and its break-throughs are more serendipitous than calculated. There are disciplines for prayer, to be sure, but no mechanisms. Gimmicks and panaceas—like glittery gimcrack lures for fishermen—are widely available and equally useless. There is simply no substitute for becoming like Christ other than being with Christ, and especially with Him in solitude and suffering and sorrow. And so prayer, like fishing, is about waiting. Prayer is the poetry of waiting. It is the language of those who know that what is now is not what should be and not what will be, if we wait." Mark Buchanan, from Your God is Too Safe

To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly broken. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. The thing I have to work on in myself is the issue of belief…satan, who I believe exists as much as I believe Jesus exists, wants us to believe meaningless things for meaningless reasons. Can you imagine if Christians actually believed God was trying to rescue us from the pit of our own self-addiction? Can you imagine? Can you imagine what Americans would do if they understood over half the world was living in poverty? Do you think they would change the way they live, the products they purchase, and the politicians we elect? If we believed the right things, the true things, there wouldn’t be very many problems on earth. But the problem with deep belief is that it costs something. And there is something inside me, some selfish beast of a subtle thing that doesn’t like the truth at all because it carries responsibility, and if I actually believe these things I have to do something about them- Donald Miller

Steve Turner- We today believe in Marx, Freud and Darwin. We believe that everything is ok as long as you don't hurt anyone to the best of your definition of hurt and to the best of your definition of knowledge. We believe in sex before, during and after marriage. We believe in the therapy of sin. We believe that taboos are taboo. We believe that everything is getting better despite evidence to the contrary. The evidence must be investigated and you can prove anything with evidence. We believe there is something in horoscopes, UFO's and bent spoons, that Jesus was a good man just like Mohammad, Buddha and ourselves. He was a good teacher with good morals, although we think His good morals were really bad. We believe that all religions are basically the same, at least the ones that we read were. They all believe in love and goodness, they only defer on matters of creation, sin, heaven, hell, God and salvation. We believe that after death comes the nothing, because when you ask the dead what happens, they say nothing. If death is not the end and the dead have lied, then it's compulsory heaven for all, except of course for Hitler, Stalin and Genghis Khan. We believe in Masters and Johnson, what's selected is average, what's average is normal and what's normal is good. We believe in total disarmament. We believe there are direct links between war and bloodshed. We believe the Americans should beat their guns into tractors and the Russians would be sure to follow. We believe that man is essentially good it's only his behavior that lets him down. This is the fault of society, society is the fault of conditions and conditions are the fault of society. We believe that each man must find the truth that is right for him and reality will adapt accordingly, the universe will readjust, history will alter. We believe that there is no absolute truth except the truth that there is no absolute truth. We believe in the rejection of creeds and the flowering of individual thought. If chance be the father of all flesh, then disaster is his rainbow in the sky and when you hear a state of emergency, sniper kill, youth's gone looting, troops on rampage, bomb blasts school, it's but the sound of man worshipping his maker.

Should the Bible be a part of a public school classroom? Fisher Ames lived in Massachusetts from 1758 to 1808. He was a publicist and a statesman, as well as a judge and a Massachusetts representative to the Federal Congress between the years of 1791 and 1797. He is known as the primary author of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution - the amendment most often quoted today as a reason to ban religious expression from public life and, in particular, public schools.
On September 20, 1789, Fisher Ames was quoted in Paladian Magazine, giving this view of American education: "We have a dangerous trend beginning to take place in our education. We're starting to put more and more textbooks into our schools. We've become accustomed of late of putting little books into the hands of children, containing fables and moral lessons. "We're spending less time in the classroom on the Bible, which should be the principal text in our schools. The Bible states these great moral lessons better than any other man-made book."

And yet you fail to understand, That God is what we need!

"Wertz hits it. A solid sound. I learned a lot from the sound of the ball on the bat. Always did. I could tell from the sound whether to come in or go back. This time I'm going back, a long way back, but there is never any doubt in my mind. I am going to catch this ball. I turn and run for the bleachers. But I got it. Maybe you didn't know that, but I knew it. Soon as it got hit, I knew I'd catch this ball.
"But that wasn't the problem. The problem was Larry Doby on second base. On a deep fly to center field at the Polo Grounds, a runner could score all the way from second. I've done that myself and more than once. So if I make the catch, which I will, and Larry scores from second, they still get the run that puts them ahead. "All the time I'm running back, I'm thinking, 'Willie, you've got to get this ball back to the infield.' "I run fifty or seventy-five yards--right to the warning track--and I take the ball a little toward my left shoulder. Suppose I stop and turn and throw. I will get nothing on the ball. No momentum going into my throw. What I have to do is this: after I make the catch, turn. Put all my momentum into that turn. "To keep my momentum, to get it working for me, I have to turn very hard and short and throw the ball from exactly the point that I caught it. The momentum goes into my turn and up through my legs and into my throw. "That's what I did. I got my momentum and my legs into that throw. Larry Doby ran to third, but he couldn't score. Al Rosen didn't even advance from first. "All the while I was running back, I was planning how to get off that throw.
"Then some of them wrote, I made that throw by instinct." -- Willie Mays describing "the catch"

David D'alessandros- 10 rules for career success
1. Look beyond your navel. Many people become so self-absorbed that they have an absurdly unrealistic view of how others regard them. Knowing how you come across will help you become the person you want to be- that means effective, competent, and fair.
2. Your boss is the coauthor of your brand. Your boss is the filter through which higher-up view your accomplishments and failings. Treat your relationship with your boss carefully.
3. Put your boss on the couch. Figure out whether your boss is the type to stand in your way or help your brand.
4. Learn which is the pickle fork. Know the importance of etiquette and good manners. Show you belong in the world of senior executives.
5. Kenny Rogers is right. Sometimes a work situation is hopeless and you have to, as Rogers sang, know when to fold 'em.
6. It's always show time. Big events don't make careers. Attention to mundane, everyday actions build brands and good careers.
7. Make the right enemies. Never offending anyone dilutes your brand. But make the right choices about the fights you pick.
8. Don't get swallowed by the bubble. if you reach the top, don't believe the stories about your own genius. Surround yourself with people who are honest and be willing to accept criticism.
9. The higher you fly the more you will be shot at. Success breeds criticism. Prepare to be a target and prepare for bad news - or prevent it - before it happens. Admit when you are wrong and never adopt a bunker mentality.
10. Make sure you stay a contender. It's never too late to change your brand. Be conscious every day of what kind of brand you're building, and don't let setbacks deter you.
"The danger today is the bland leading the bland." Leonard Sweet
Henry Bosch wrote- Socrates taught for forty years, Plato for fifty, Aristotle for forty, and Jesus for only three. Yet the influence of Christ's three-year ministry infinitely transcends the impact left by the combined 130 years of teaching from these men who were among the greatest philosophers of all antiquity. Jesus painted no pictures; yet, some of the finest paintings of Raphael, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci received their inspiration from Him. Jesus wrote no poetry; but Dante, Milton, and scores of the world's greatest poets were inspired by Him. Jesus composed no music; still Haydn, Handel, Beethoven, Bach, and Mendelssohn reached their highest perfection of melody in the hymns, symphonies and oratories they composed in His praise. Every sphere of human greatness has been enriched by this humble carpenter of Nazareth.
The Second Reformation, by William Beckham
What am I holding on to that God is in the process of changing?
Is the church we preach to on Sunday like the church we preach about on Sunday.
The pastors at most churches are overworked and unemployed. They are Overworked in a multitude of tasks that do not have the slightest labors and serious concerns of maintaining a disciplined spiritual life.
The Lord told me a second thing. “You are not growing,” He said. “You think you are, because you've gone from 200 to 600. But you're not growing- you're just getting fat.” All you have is more people of the same quality as before.”
By 312 AD the church had changed from regular home meetings and large group meetings to almost exclusively conducting meetings in special buildings. Consequently, the church became an audience! Since that time many things have differed from church to church, theological interpretation, type of worship and even clothes clergy wear. But the one winged, cathedral structure has remained constant over the past seventeen centuries of church history. While Constantine gave the ultimate stamp of approval to this one winged approach, it was not completely his fault Several trends developed during the first 300 years of church history, making the fourth century ripe for Satan's attack and Constantine's mistake.
Christianity was more and more aligned with political systems
Professional leaders were developing church structure
Spiritual power had given way to human ability and effort
Servant leadership was gradually replaced with authoritarianism
Church structure was being patterned after the world
The church was on the defensive rather than the offensive
The small group context of the church was suspect in the eyes of government
What are the characteristics of Constantine's cathedral paradigm?
People go to a building (cathedral) on a special day of the week (Sunday) and someone (a priest, or today, a pastor) does something to them (teaching, preaching, absolution or healing) or for them (a ritual or entertainment) for a price (offerings)
Satan could not have devised a more ingenious plan! First of all, he gave the church political sanction and social respectability. then he set about to neutralize the church by attacking it's small group structure. the church was thus limited in its ability to nurture new members, apply spiritual power, edify the body, train necessary leaders, deliver the gospel to the world, encounter the presence of the living Christ and walk in the gifts of the Spirit.
“Where’s Eddie? Is he sick?”
“Nope,” came the reply. “He ain’t workin’ here no more.”
“Do you have anyone in mind for the vacancy?” inquired the customer.
“Nope! Eddie didn’t leave no vacancy!”
A large percentage of church members are consumers, not producers. They are consumer Christians because the traditional church has no viable context in which to make them producers, or use them in a productive way. Eddies contract with the traditional church is to be pampered, to receive ministry and to be entertained. In exchange, he will be counted in the numbers and will give an offering from time to time to support the system. Consumer Christians represent 80% of church members who are supported and ministered to by the other 20% who produce. This means Eddie is anything but a neutral factor in the ministry of the church. In fact, he probably represents its most serious debilitating factor. Eddie is a major consumer in the church itself, requiring many producing Christians to care for his needs. Consumer Christians neutralize the productivity of the 20% of mature members who expend most of their time and energy ministering to Eddie, Mrs. Eddie and all the Little Eddies. Think about the 20% of mature, producing church members. They are capable of reaching out into the world, of modeling New Testament Christian living, of taking the church beyond the parking lot, of making a difference in the Kingdom. But they are so busy maintaining the system that supports Eddie that little time or energy is left to minister in a New Testament sense. Eddie may leave if he finds another church he feels meets more of his needs. Eddie will gravitate toward the strongest ministry pull and the most guaranteed benefits. Eddie can always find spiritual sounding reasons to justify his migration to greener pastures. “We are concerned for the spiritual welfare of our family. This new church has such a wonderful program for our children.” Or, “Their style of worship is so exciting and moving. We want to worship God like that.” Or, “I am fed by the wonderful preaching of that pastor. He is such a spiritual man of God.” Who can question Eddie's motives when he gives such spiritual-sounding reasons?
Why does the church tolerate manipulation, practically blackmail, from those members who contribute the least to the work of the church? Eddie has his hook into the one-winged church because his presence is the measure of success in one-winged church circles. Filling up the church on Sunday morning is the bottom line of institutional religion.
Lyle Schaller points out the danger of a distribution, rather than a contribution, world view in an organization. “The higher the expectations of what people can and will contribute in terms of talent, creativity, time, energy, sacrifices, of the total group and the less pronounced the internal divisiveness. That is the message of the Christian faith, the story of the great schools, the theme of the great churches, and the glue of unified societies. By contrast, raising the expectations of what people will be given invariably tends to politicize the decision-making processes, increase the stress level, and encourage divisive arguments about who is receiving a fair share and who is being cheated out of a fair share.”

Can this church still be the church, beyond the church parking lot?
Does this church have any effective structure that operates as the church beyond the church property?
Must unbelievers and the hurting wait until next Sunday before the church can minister to them as His living body?
Must all these Christians now become individual “Lone Rangers” and “Spiritual Commandos” who are cut off from their support base and supply lines.

In New Orleans, beginning Tuesday morning, August 30, I saw men in helicopters risking their lives to save stranded flood victims from rooftops. The rescuers were White, the stranded Black. I saw Caucasians navigating their small, private boats in violent, swirling, toxic floodwaters to find fellow citizens trapped in their houses. Those they saved were Black.
I saw Brotherhood. New York Congressman Charlie Rangel saw Racism.
Yes, there are Two Americas. One is the real America, where virtually every White person I know sends money, food or clothes to those in need -- now and in other crises -- regardless of color. This America is colorblind.
The other is the America fantasized and manufactured by Charlie Rangel, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, who constantly cry "racism!" even in situations where it does not exist, even when undeniable images illustrate love, compassion and concern. These three men, together with today's NAACP, want to continue the notion of Racist America. It is their Mantra, their calling card. Their power, money, and continued media appearances depend on it.
Often, people caught up in accusing others of sin neglect to undergo their own personal introspection. They begin to think they alone inhabit the moral high ground. It is high time these men peered into their own hearts at the dark chamber that causes this unceasing labeling of their fellow Americans as "racist." They may find in that chamber their own racism -- against Whites.
There is only one real America. Beginning Friday morning in Houston, thousands of regular citizens poured into the Astrodome offering water, food, clean clothes, personal items, baby diapers and toys, love and even their homes to the evacuees who had been bused in from New Orleans. Most of the givers were White, most of those being helped were Black. But there was Jesse Jackson, busy on TV, accusing the country of not putting Blacks -- i.e., him -- on some type of Commission he is demanding.
Where was he early in the week? Not sweating with others from around the country who had scraped their last dollar to come help. With Jesse, it's always about Jesse.
After decades of hearing accusations from Jesse, Al, Charlie, the NAACP and certain elitists about how racist America is, it would have been refreshing to hear them for once give thanks to those they for years have been maligning. These self-anointed spokesmen for the Black community lead only when it comes to foisting guilt and condemnation, and not when it comes to acknowledging the good in those they have made a career in castigating.
As a Rabbi I have a message I wish to offer to my fellow members of the cloth, Reverends Jackson and Sharpton: "It is time to do some soul searching. Your continued efforts to tear this country apart, even in light of the monumental goodness shown by your White brothers, is a sin."
There are no churches in the world like the American churches. And there are no better parishioners and members of churches anywhere in the world. These churches are saving the day. Their members -- infused by the special and singular teachings of our unique American Judeo-Christian understanding of the Bible -- are, at this moment, writing an historic chapter in giving, initiative, and selflessness. They are opening their homes to strangers. They are doing what government is incapable of doing.
America works because of its faith-based institutions. It always has. That is what makes it America.
So next time the ACLU tries to diminish and marginalize the churches, saying there is no role for religion in American public life, that an impenetrable wall must be erected separating the citizens from their faith, cry out "Katrina." Next time the ACLU goes to court asking that U.S. soldiers not be allowed to say Grace in the Mess Hall and that communities be forbidden from setting up a nativity scene, ask yourself: without the motivation of Goodness sourced in Faith, would people offer such sacrifice? Where else does this Brotherhood come from but the Bible which teaches "Thou Shall Love Thy Neighbor as Yourself."
I saw brotherhood on Fox News, where 24/7 reporters used their perch as a clearing-house for search-and-rescue missions and communication between the stranded and those in position to save. In contrast, the Old-line networks continued with their usual foolish, brain-numbing programming. Those who always preach "compassion" chose profit over people.
The New York Times has utterly failed America. Its columnists could have used their talents and word skills to inspire and unite a nation. Columnists such as Frank Rich and Paul Krugman, however, revealed their true colors by evading their once-in-a-lifetime chance to help and instead chose to divide, condemn, and fuel the fires and poison the waters of Louisiana. In them, I saw no Brotherhood. The newspaper always preaching "compassion" verifies Shakespeare's "They protest too much."
Similar elitists here in the northeast and on the West coast have over the years expressed their view of the South as "unsophisticated" and Texans as "cowboys." Well, the South has come through, especially Houston and other parts of Texas, whereas, as I write this on Labor Day, the limousine moralizers are lying on east and west coast beaches thinking they're doing their part by reading Times' editorials and calling George Bush "racist." How sanctimonious life becomes when proving you are not a racist depends not on living in a truly integrated neighborhood, but by simply calling others racist.
Like so often in history, facts trump platitudes. Reality reigns. Those who always preach brotherhood, thus far have acted devoid of it. Those who for decades have been accused by elitists of not having compassion are the ones living it. They are: the churches, the military, and the sons and daughters of the South.
Quotes from wealthy people

I am the most miserable man on earth- John Jacob Astor
I have made many millions, but they have brought me no happiness- John D. Rockefeller

Do you givin' while you're livin', so you're knowin' where it's goin'.”- Ron Blue, financial advisor
Money never stays with me. It would burn me if it did. I throw it out of my hands as soon as possible, let it should find its way into my heart.”- John Wesley
The following words of a commitment statement reportedly found among the papers of a young African pastor in Zimbabwe after he was martyred truly describe the colors of a Christian.
I'm a part of the fellowship of the unashamed. The die has been cast. I have stepped over the line. The decision has been made. I'm a disciple of His and I won't look back, let up, slow down, back away, or be still.
My past is redeemed. My present makes sense. My future is secure. I'm done and finished with low living, sight walking, small planning, smooth knees, colorless dreams, tamed visions, mundane talking, cheap living, and dwarfed goals.
I no longer need preeminence, prosperity, position, promotions, plaudits, or popularity. I don't have to be right, or first, or tops, or recognized, or praised, or rewarded. I live by faith, lean on His presence, walk by patience, lift by prayer, and labor by Holy Spirit power.
My face is set. My gait is fast. My goal is heaven. My road may be narrow, my way rough, my companions few, but my guide is reliable and my mission is clear.
I will not be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, deluded or delayed.
I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice or hesitate in the presence of the adversary. I will not negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity, or meander in the maze of mediocrity.
I won't give up, shut up, or let up until I have stayed up, stored up, prayed up, paid up, and preached up for the cause of Christ.
I am a disciple of Jesus. I must give until I drop, preach until all know, and work until He comes. And when He does come for His own, He'll have no problems recognizing me. My colors will be clear!
