A Mighty Ally

A. If God is for us, who can be against us?
What does it mean that God is for us, or if God is for us? gives us some insight into this;
118 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
(ESV): Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! 2 Let Israel say, “His steadfast love endures forever.” 3 Let the house of Aaron say, “His steadfast love endures forever.” 4 Let those who fear the Lord say, “His steadfast love endures forever.” 5 Out of my distress I called on the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free. 6 The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? 7 The Lord is on my side as my helper; I shall look in triumph on those who hate me. 8 It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. 9 It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.
b. There is a popular Praise and Worship song out that talks about God fighting our battles. Since God is for us, or our ally, He stands and fights for us through Christ’s actions and the Holy Spirit’s prayerful groanings. states, “The Lord is my strength and by song; He has become my salvation. This brings me to another song that is a prayer to want the Healer more than the healing, the Savior more than the saving. Adrain Rogers once said, “God did not die for sin, He died for the sinner.” That is for you and I, for our children, our family, our enemies, and even for the vilest of offender.
for his steadfast love endures forever!
2  Let Israel say,
c. God as Divine Warrior
The idea and image fo the divine warrior dominates the oldest Israelite poetry. The use of the term throughout history describes divine activity in terms of war. Some examples are , , , , which are hymns of victory recording Israel’s military success ().
“His steadfast love endures forever.”
This image of God being a warrior even influenced the image that Israel expected the Messiah to protray. According to the image of God being a warrior, Israel was expecting Jesus to be a warrior king. One to overthrow the existing, suppressive government of Rome, and establish an earthly kingdom that would destroy all of Israel’s enemies.
3  Let the house of Aaron say,
David referred to God as a fortress, and the Psalmist of says He is the Rock of our Savlation. In the Psalmist (most likely David) writes;
“His steadfast love endures forever.”
In you, O Lord, do I take refuge;
let me never be put to shame;
4  Let those who fear the Lord say,
let me never be put to shame;
“His steadfast love endures forever.”
in your righteousness deliver me!
in your righteousness deliver me!
2 Incline your ear to me;
5  Out of my distress I called on the Lord;
2 Incline your ear to me;
the Lord answered me and set me free.
rescue me speedily!
rescue me speedily!
6  The Lord is on my side; I will not fear.
Be a rock of refuge for me,
Be a rock of refuge for me,
What can man do to me?
a strong fortress to save me!
a strong fortress to save me!
3 For you are my rock and my fortress;
7  The Lord is on my side as my helper;
3 For you are my rock and my fortress;
and for your name’s sake you lead me and guide me;
I shall look in triumph on those who hate me.
and for your name’s sake you lead me and guide me;
8  It is better to take refuge in the Lord
4 you take me out of the net they have hidden for me,
4 you take me out of the net they have hidden for me,
for you are my refuge.
than to trust in man.
for you are my refuge.
5 Into your hand I commit my spirit;
9  It is better to take refuge in the Lord
5 Into your hand I commit my spirit;
you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.
than to trust in princes.
you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.
God is our fortress, He is our safety, and our positive assurance of hope through our faith in Him. gives us the definition of faith as; “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Hope is not wishful thinking, rather it is the assurance of knowing that God of “Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.” If God is for us, then who could be against us? God is working within through the Holy Spirit and praying for us constantly. God is in controll our current situation did not cantch God off guard, God is always at work.
HE is our salvation. As tells us, “I love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my Rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.”
“To those who love God,” states, “all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.” God intercedes for His children, the Spirit helps in our weakness, even when we don’t know what to pray the Spirit Himself interceeds with groanings too deep for words.
B. Through God we are “More than conquerors.”
a. Conqueror, that’s a fun word to say but what does it mean. The conventional meaning of the word is to defeat, take over, crush, or vanquish. Conqueror is also a term used to describe a person or group of people (army) that comes into a foreign land to claim it as their own.Shortly after the “New World” (Americas) was “found” the European powers sent their armies to “Conquer” the “New World.” Their objective was to claim the land as their own and send back the riches of the land to the treasuries of the sending governments. The Spanish sent thousands of men to search out and conquer the the “New World.” They were called “Conquistadors.” Our position in South Alabama puts us fairly close to a path made by a famous Conquistador that was looking for the “Fountain of Youth,” Ponce DeLeon. He left his mark on the area so strongly they even named a town after him. However, when the Spanish eventually left their holdings in Florida, it eventually became part of the United States. Their work and efforts could not hold the territory permanently for Spain.
b. tells us that we can be more than conquerors, we can be eternal residents, forever in the hereafter worshiping in the presence of God. Being more than a conqueror means our victories are sealed and our defeats are forgiven. Not because of our efforts, but because of His gracious gift. Notice that the verse finishes with, “Through Him who loves us.” “We love Him because He first loved us.” Since God is our ally, He goes before us securing the victory in advance. Sure, we will have to go through stuff while on this earth, but our reward is not earthly, it is Heavenly. God is for His children, His family (remember, we are joint heirs with Jesus), the body of believers that are faithfully in His will and service, because we love Him who first loved us. As tells us, He is the greatest Giver, who gave the Greatest Gift, for the simple reason that He loves us.
c. Paul writes in vs. 38-39, “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angles nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
There is a song based on this verse:
“Nothing can seperate us from God’s love, not our own fears today, no worries about tommorrow, not even the powers of hell could seperate us from God’s love.”
God is our ally, our source of power, our calm in times of distress, our strong tower, our fortress, and our Rock of Salvation.
“Without Him I could do nothing, Without Him I’d surely fail, Without Him I would be drifting like a ship without a sail.
Jesus, O Jesus do you know Him today? Do not turn Him away. Jesus, O Jesus without Him, how lost I would be.
