Attitude # 2
We’re going to continue on the subject of a Right Mental Attitude. Our attitude plays a very important part in our Christian walk. Our attitude can bring defeat in our lives or it can help us overcome the enemy and all the obstacles that we face.
I) We know that faith is a very important. True faith that resides in the heart, not in the head. (We can say that we agree with the Word, but it might not be in your heart.)
A) True faith in the heart will produce a right mental attitude.
1) Turn with me to TITUS 2:10.
(a) God wants us to make the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ attractive to the world.
(i) Again, he says in (TITUS 2:10) “Adorn the doctrine of God.”
(ii) The word “Adorn” means “To beautify, to decorate, to make attractive.”
(b) We are to make the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ attractive to the world, but how?
2) In Paul’s teaching in the book of (TITUS 2) we can see that living a good holy life and doing what is right will adorn the gospel.
3) But he also tells us in (TITUS 2:6) “To be sober minded.”
(a) Sober minded can mean “to be of sound mind, to exercise self control, and to curb one’s passions.”
(b) But it can also mean “Having or indicating an awareness of things as they really are.”
(i) In other words, “Seeing things as they really are.”
(ii) Not seeing things as the world sees things, but we are to see things through the eyes of the Word.
(c) The Word is the final authority.
(i) (ROM 3:4) Says, “Let God be true, but every man a liar.” Jesus said in (JOHN 17:17), “Let God be true, but every man a liar.” Paul refers to the Word many times as the “WORD OF TRUTH.”
(d) What the Word of God says is how things really are.
4) When you begin to see things as the Word of God says they are your attitude will begin to change.
B) Having a right mental attitude is going to help you tremendously when problems come against you.
1) Turn with me to 1 PETER 1:3-7.
(a) In (V6-7) he’s talking about when test and trials come.
(b) But look at 1 PETER 1:13.
(i) When he says, “Gird up the loins of your mind, be sober,” he saying, “Be clam, have the right mental attitude.”
2) Problems are going to come. Adverse circumstances will arise.
(a) When it appears that nothing is going right in the natural, there is a tendency to lean towards the natural rather than to put your total trust in what the Word says.
(i) Let me say this, God is not the author of problems, test, and trials, Satan is.
(ii) God doesn’t get glory when a problem arises, and you fold up, compromise and let the Devil defeat you.
(iii) But He is glorified when you over come the problem through His Word.
II) Last week we talked about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. They over came the problem that was set before them.
A) How did they over come?
1) They faced that fiery trial with the right mental attitude.
(a) They didn’t complain, they didn’t murmur, they didn’t get hostile.
(i) They said, “Our God will deliver us.”
2) That right mental attitude and their faith in God opened the door for God to move, His super natural power.
B) The very worse time to have a wrong or negative mental attitude is when you’re under pressure.
1) Problems cause pressures.
(a) A negative attitude will only bring more problems.
(b) When Israel was murmuring and complaining against God, God said, “So be it unto you.”
(i) Their complaining made things worse.
III) Peter said in (1 Peter 1:13) “Gird up the loins of your mind.”
A) Paul said in (EPH 6:14) “Having your loins girt about with truth.”
1) How are you going to “Gird up the loins of your mind?”
(a) With the truth of God’s Word.
(b) Putting God’s Word in our heads, then it will drop down into our hearts.
2) Joshua tells us to meditate on the Word of God.
(a) “Meditate” means “to think upon it.”
3) (ROM 12:2) tells us to renew our minds.
(a) The only way to do that is to get God’s Word into our heads.
B) When Peter says, “Gird up the loins of your mind.” (1PET 1:13)
1) The word “Gird” means “GET READY.”
(a) When the problems come, WE NEED TO BE READY.
2) Our mind and our spirit must be in agreement.
(a) You can’t have faith in your heart and be murmuring and complaining in your mind.
(b) You can’t be saying in your heart, “My God shall supply all my needs” and screaming in you head, “BUT THIS PROBLEM IS TOO BIG.”
(i) Your mind and your heart have to be in agreement.
(ii) You have to have to right mental attitude.
(c) When your heart says, “My God shall supply all my needs,” your mind should be saying, “My God delivers me, he is more than enough, I have the victory in Christ Jesus,” and go on with your rejoicing keeping that right mental attitude.
IV) Turn with me to ISA 26:3.
A) You will notice that God has given us a promise, but we must meet His condition.
1) The promise is: “He will keep you in perfect peace.”
2) The condition is: “If your mind is stayed on Him.”
(a) We can see in this V that the mind plays a very important part in receiving this promise. (Perfect peace)
3) But let me add this, the 2 words “perfect peace” is actually the same word used twice. It is the Hebrew word “Shalom.”
(a) However, the word “Shalom” means more then just “peace.” Listen to what the Strong’s concordance says, “completeness, soundness, welfare, peace. 1a completeness (in number). 1b safety, soundness (in body). 1c welfare, HEALTH, PROSPERITY. 1d peace, quiet, tranquility, contentment. 1e peace, friendship. 1e1 of human relationships. 1e2 with God especially in covenant relationship. 1f peace (from war). 1g peace (as adjective)
(b) Listen to the Message translation, “People with their minds set on you, you keep completely whole”
(c) Your mind plays a very important roll in receiving any of God’s promises.
B) I’m not talking about mind power.
1) I’m talking about the power of God’s Word working in a faith-filled heart and a renewed mind.
2) As your mind is stayed upon Him, you can face every situation with the right mental attitude, without worry or fear.
C) Turn with me to LUKE 12:22-32.
1) Jesus is telling us how to have a “Worry Free” life.
(a) He’s telling us take no thought (don’t worry) about material things, even if they seem to be necessities.
(b) We don’t have to live in suspense of what is going to happen tomorrow.
(i) We don’t have to have a negative or doubtful mind.
(c) We can live with a positive attitude, knowing that God will takes care of us if we will simply seek 1st the kingdom of God.
(i) (Matt 6:33) “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
(ii) You can have peace in life, you can have a good positive mental attitude, because when you put His kingdom 1st in your life, and your mind stays upon Him, you have the assurance that God will always take care of you.
(iii) That’s when the victory comes and that’s when we open the door for God’s miraculous power to be in operation.
