Thank you for tuning in this morning

Before we get into the message today I do want to share something with our church family and if you aren’t a part of Liberty Baptist you can hear too.
Today, Palm Sunday, is a special day for us for more than the fact than it is the week before Easter. Today marks one year since we’ve met. Last year on Palm Sunday I preached my first message here and my wife and I got to meet you amazing people. I hate that we can’t be together to celebrate and talk about the last year and how God has blessed but I do want you to know that my family and I are extremely grateful for each of you and the love you have shown to us over the last year. I look forward to next week so we can be able to see one another whether we can shake hands or not. We love you, we miss you, and we are praying for you.
This morning we are going to continue in our series “Jesus is” by seeing how Jesus is our Savior. Go ahead and open your Bibles up to John 19:13.
Last week we saw how Jesus is our strength. He is the vine and we are the branches. When we abide in Him, the vine can flow through us.
This week I hope this message will serve as an encouragement, a reminder, and a challenge to each of us.
Let’s begin by talking about this week. This coming week, sometimes referred to as Holy Week, marks the week before Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection.
This week we should remember what Jesus did for us…
His final evening before His suffering began in the upper room with eating of the Passover supper.Jesus let Judas leave to do his evil deed of leading soldiers to the garden.Jesus and His disciples leave the upper room and go to Gethsemane.

Jesus, after agonizing for three hours, is now ready and Judas shows up with soldiers to arrest the Lord.Taken to Caiaphas house and falsely accused, beaten and condemned by the Sanhedrin council (across the Kidron Valley). During this time Peter denies Christ.

From there to Pilate around 6:00 A.M. First time, Pilate discovers Jesus was from Galilee Then He was sent to Herod, the Governor of Galilee. Then Back to Pilate who could find no fault in Him.Pilate suggests releasing Him according to the custom on the Passover Feast. They release Barabbas instead.
Note—Pilate, perhaps hoping the people would have their thirst for blood quenched had Jesus scourged ().
This included stripping him naked and tying His hands above Him to a beam, so His feet barely touched the ground. Then they took a cat of nine tails and whipped Him multiple times until His body was torn, bleeding and bruised. (Jewish law: less than 40. The Romans had no limit.)

The soldiers then placed the robe on Him and sat Him down and mocked Jesus. Plaiting a crown of thorns upon His head with razor sharp thorns.

13 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.
14 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
16 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.
17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:
18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.
19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.
21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.
22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.
23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.
24 They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.
25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

You have to know that during this time the Jewish people hated Rome and the rule they had over them. Even with that hatred they were willing to sell out Jesus to Him.
Jesus was a Jew, and they hated Him.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
It was a fulfillment of prophecy
3 He is despised and rejected of men; A man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: And we hid as it were our faces from him; He was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, And carried our sorrows: Yet we did esteem him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted.
They didn’t believe Jesus’ claims to be the Messiah.
Just as many in our day will mock Jesus and speak with vulgar language concerning Him, and dimish who He is by making jokes at his expense.
Honestly not much as changed in almost 2k years.
One day things will change. One day all will not just know but recognize that Jesus is God.
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
Then we see the suffering of Jesus.

After releasing Barabas they are now en route to the cross.

Jesus has now been whipped, beat, and mocked and is now carrying an 80lb beam on his back to His death.
31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.
32 And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross.
It became to much for Him to bear on His own. They grabbed Simon from the crowd and ordered Him to carry the cross.

Golgotha is the Hebrew name for Calvary, the place of the skull.
This is the place where Jesus would be crucified.
What is crucifixion though? Look with me at
15 And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.
16 And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band.
17 And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,
18 And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!
19 And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.
20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.
Crucifixion was process that was intended to be as brutal as possible. After reaching Golgotha they laid Jesus on the Cross and drove a nail in each wrist and then into the arch of both feet.
While on the cross this would require Him to place full weight on the nail in his feet to push up and draw air into his lungs.
This would cause agonizing pain as the nail would tear through nerves between bones in the feet.
The way crucifixion was commonly ended was by breaking the legs of the person hanging on the cross which would keep them from breathing.
When Jesus died He gave up the ghost before his legs were broken.
He we rejected by His own people, scoffed at, and then put to death in one of the worst ways possible.
This lead to a Revelation of His Nature.

You have to know that the way Jesus conducted Himself on the cross wasn’t normal. He spent His time telling people they would be in paradise, getting someone to care for His mother, and calling out to the Father saying He was forsaken.
This lead a tough Roman Centurion who had put hundreds if not thousands to death on a cross to say
39 And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.
The Revelation of His nature came from this centurion and also came by an unlikely source.

Typically when a person is crucified there is a sign placed above them indicating the crime they are being hung for. In this case though Pilate could not find a reason to hang Jesus. So he put something else on the sign.
He put the words “Jesus of Nazereth THe King of the Jews” written in three languges Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.
Pilate was doing this as a way to mock Christ and I’m sure it was rubbing the jewish leaders the wrong way as well but the fact is there has never been a more true statement written than that.
His nature was revealed by this unlikely source and also by prophetic scripture.

gives us a description of the crucifixion over 900 years before the event
14 I am poured out like water, And all my bones are out of joint: My heart is like wax; It is melted in the midst of my bowels.
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; And my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; And thou hast brought me into the dust of death.
16 For dogs have compassed me: The assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: They pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I may tell all my bones: They look and stare upon me.
18 They part my garments among them, And cast lots upon my vesture.
It was foretold how Jesus would die many years before He was even born much less in ministry.
His nature was revealed by an unlikely source and through prophetic scripture and by an act of Love

Look at
25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
Jesus was the first child of Mary and had the responsibility of caring for his mom because it is believed that at this point His earthly father, Joseph, had passed away.
He displays His infinite love by caring for others while undergoing the most painful death anyone could.
He was rejected by His own people, His nature was revealed by by unlikely sources and then we see the redemption of His sacrifice.

It was complete according to the scriptures.
The word Accomplished there in verse 28 is from the greek word Teleo which means to finish, to complete, to bring to an end.
Jesus has been on the cross for 3 hours and the land had been dark as the sun itself was covered. It was during this time that jesus bore the weight of the world’s sin and expereinced something he had neer experienced before…sep;aration from the father.

45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
We have lived our entire lives with sin in them putting separation between God the Father and us. Jesus had never known life without a close relationship with the Father and in the moments that He felt it because of our sin, becuase of your sin and mine He cried out
“MY GOD MY GOD WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME!”
Can you hear Him? Can you see Him? Jesus, the perfect sinless Son of God with naisl through His hands and beaten bloody. A crown of thorns pressed into His head.
Pushing up on the nail through his feet to gain the air in His lungs to exclaim, “ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTANI”
why did He do tht? for you. for me.
His suffering was complete. Now we are recipients of the Completed provision.

30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
That phrase “It is finished” its translated from the Greek work “Tetelastai” meaning- paid in full.
In it’s perfect tense means this act of payment occured once and has continuing results.
We have Salvation through this act. The Bible teaches us we have salvation through His blood.

29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
Jesus shed his blood for us to have salvation by God’s grace and through Faith in Him.

Oswald Chambers said “The atonement is a propitiation whereby God, through the death of Jesus, makes an unholy man holy.”
Jesus died for your sins before you even committed them. He has always loved you, even when you may think your unloveable.
8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
Jesus lived a perfect life that ended with a prophesied death accomplishing God’s perfect plan.

Who is Jesus? Who is Jesus to you?
We saw last week Jesus is our Strength. THis week I pray you’ve seen that Jesus is our Salvation.
He is a rejected Savior
A revealed Savior
and a Redeeming Savior.
He came to die and suffer so that you wouldn’t have to.
Next week we will celebrate the resurrection of Christ, we will see that Jesus is Alive!
But is He alive to you?

Have you made the decision to trust Jesus as your Savior?
You may be watching this and not know who Jesus is. The things I’ve said today could be foreign to you. You didn’t realize how great a relationship with Jesus could be.
You thought you had to be good enough, you thought you had to do certain things in the church or say certain words.
I hope this morning you’ve realized that slavation and a relationship with God through Jesus christ isn’t depending on any of those things. It’s based upon your faith in Jesus Christ.
The Bible says in
that God loves you so much He sent Jesus to die for your sins. In that same verse Jesus said that whosoever believes on him will not perish but have everlasting life.
Eternal life in Heaven with Jesus is based upon your belief in Jesus’ death burial and resurrection paying for your sins.
It’s that simple. Believe on Jesus…have a relationship with Him.
If you made the decision to trust in Jesus this morning I want to invite you to confirm that with prayer. The words of the prayer mean nothing if you don’t believe in your heart that Jesus is the Son of God who died for your sins and was raised from the dead.
