They That Passed By...

mt27.
Matthew 27:36–40 KJV 1900
36 And sitting down they watched him there; 37 And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. 38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left. 39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, 40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.
One of the greatest events of humanity is taking place…
Date: AD 30
Location: Jerusalem
The Lord Jesus Christ is on the cross...
It has been a whirlwind of a week...
He had entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday -
His entry was prophetic
His entry was powerful
His entry was pre-eminent
He comes in and the crowds receive him, honor him, praise him…
Matthew 21:8–9 KJV 1900
8 And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. 9 And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.
He enters into the temple and confronts the money changers in the temple…
He heals the lame and the lame
The chief priests hear people praising the Lord Jesus in the temple and conspire how to entangle and kill him
On the mount of Olives the Lord prophesied about the temple being destroyed and being rebuilt in 3 days...
The Lord Travels to Bethany and stays at Simon the Leper’s house… (talk about quarantine - leper’s knew something about that)
jeuss
Jesus is anointed with precious ointment - alabaster box...
Judas conspires to betray the Savior with the Chief priests for 30 pieces of silver
The Disciples assemble with the Savior and observe the Last Passover - the last supper
They go to the Mount of Olives in route to the special place of prayer - the garden of Gethsemane...
It is here where Jesus prays...
“…O my Father, if it be possible, let this cu pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt”
Judas will later come with a multitude - a mob driven by the chief priests and elders of the people - swords and staves… to take the Savior violently - Judas - betrays the Savior with a kiss -
The week is a blur,
His arrest - 2 back to back votes of the Sanhedrin (it was Jewish law demanded 2 sessions to hear and try a defendant) the second was a rubber stamp...
1 is said to have been around 2am and the second around 5-6 am on the Day of the crucifixion… cock that crew… denial of peter… mat. 27.1 - morning came - day began at 6 am
The Lord is brought before Pilate - the Roman Governor over the area… is found innocent - finds out that the Lord is from Galilee - and sends him over to Herod Antipas - Herod finds him innocent and sends him back to Pilate
Pilate - desiring to please the blood thirsty crowd - decides to scourge an innocent man and then release him...
But the crowds want the death penalty...
The Lord Jesus - is beaten - and by 9 is being nailed to the cross ( - 3rd hour)
The sky goes black between 12-3 while God turned his back on his Holy Son Jesus… for you and for me...
If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.
vs. 36 - and sittling down they watched him there;
vs 39 and they that passed by...
They that passed by...
when we look at these people who would “walk by” the Lord Jesus Christ - the Messiah, the Savior of the World...
What do we see about this group of people, and how might it apply to us as we approach Resurrection Sunday?
The Casual
Matthew 27:39–40 KJV 1900
39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, 40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.
Mt27.
They reviled him - blasphemeo - to slander...
They wagged their heads...
outward sign of disapproval...
I don’t know how many times pops would look at me and shake his head… my son...
this disapproval - mocking
Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days...
IF THOU BE.... the Son of God, come down...
The Casual
The Critics
Matthew 27:41–44 KJV 1900
41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, 42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. 43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. 44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.
mat27.41
Chief Priests
Scribes
Elders
He save others...
Himself he cannot save...
If he be the King of Israel - let him come down and we will believe him… (lie)
He trusted God - let God deliver him - taunting God the Father and God the Son
Thieves - the thieves also, … notice plurality at the beginning of the verse and singularity at the end of the verse… in his teeth - 1 believed - PTL
The Causal
The Critics
The Cautious
Joseph of Arimathaea
John 19:38 KJV 1900
38 And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.
Nicodemus
John
John 19:38–39 KJV 1900
38 And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. 39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.
Now Joseph - was he among the cautious, or maybe he was traveling to see the Savior -
The Committed
John 19:25 KJV 1900
25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
joh19.
Mary - the mother of Jesus
Mary’s sister -
Mary - the wife of cleophas
Mary Magdalene
The 3 Mary’s
John the apostle
John 19:26 KJV 1900
26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
Many other followers
Luke 23:27 KJV 1900
27 And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him.
They that passed by...
The Savior not only created this world
He not only is the Savior of the World
He CHANGED THIS WORLD...
More people have assembled in His name
More books have been written
More songs sung
More money given
More lives surrendered
more lives TRANSFORMED...
Where would we place ourselves if we could travel back into time…
If we could be Michael J Fox, and jump into a crazy scientists car and time travel...
if we looked at our life now? What group would that have placed us in back then?
Casual?
Critical?
Cautious?
Committed?
I would hope to think I would be in the committed group - but with the pressures and fears that mobs / relationships / social acceptance can put on people… even financial stability - would I be committed?
You and I are living in HISTORY...
if the Lord tarries his coming, how will the coming group of preachers, teachers, committed Christians… how will they view our response and actions in these critical days?
