Transcript
Isaiah would depict in such a detailed way what our Savior would go through. The prophets would be looking ahead to a promised Messiah as they declared the Promised One… Tonight we remember. This is not a service of celebration, rather it is for contemplation, reflection, and remembering what our sin actually cost…
John introduces this Man in ;
Denied three times by another friend
Abandoned by those closest to Him
Rejected by a people He had chosen
Scoffed at by those in authority
John introduces this Man in ;
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John the Baptist introduces Him in in this way...
and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”
Jesus Christ, God in the flesh lived the perfect life you and I never could. Never did wrong, never sinned… this man was:
Betrayed by a friend, one of His followers
Denied three times by another friend, who had stated he never would even if others did
Abandoned by those closest to Him
Subjected to multiple illegal trials and interrogations
Rejected by a people He had chosen and cared for
Scoffed at by those in authority whom He had authority over
picks up here...
Pilate then took Jesus and scourged Him. And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and put a purple robe on Him; and they began to come up to Him and say, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and to give Him slaps in the face. Pilate came out again and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you so that you may know that I find no guilt in Him.” Jesus then came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold, the Man!” So when the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out saying, “Crucify, crucify!” Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him.”

These things stated here are all part of the humiliation Isaiah spoke of… The scourging was commanded, the crucifixion was an order they must follow , BUT...

The mockery and scoffing, humiliation
Crown of thorns… bearing the curse in such a shameful way

Slaps to the face… Mark records they SPIT on his face
Pilate brings Jesus… Beaten, near dead already from scourging, humiliated, bloody, in mockery Pilate states:

D.L. Moody states well the implications of Pilates statement “Behold The Man”… “in recording this statement, John hoped that all readers would look carefully at (behold) the One who has taken on human flesh (1:9, 14) and has represented mankind in His sacrificial death.”
This is the humiliation we should have bore for our sins
The consequence was ours… yet he took it
That’s Mercy… not getting what we deserve
God came as man to take God’s wrath on sin
SIN: deserving of separation from God along with all His wrath
A consequence delivered by God knowing that ONLY God could deliver mankind from the consequences...
The shame, guilt and wrath was taken by Jesus Christ
Pilate finds Jesus innocent, yet out of fear of the people He delivers Christ to crucifixion...
Crucify Him!!!

The gentile Romans mocked Him, scoffed, and even administered the punishment… but do you see the hate and evil in the people as they cry out “Crucify him, crucify him!”
CRUCIFIXION:
reserved for those who were the worst of criminals,
not only was it an agonizing way to die it was absolutely one of the most humiliating ways to suffer and die.
Stripped to nothing, out in the open, on public platform for all who passed by to see the humiliation of your sin and its consequence in full view.
John’s record of these events are as follows…
So he then handed Him over to them to be crucified. They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha. There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between. Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, “JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.” Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin and in Greek. So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews’; but that He said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’ ” Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.” Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made four parts, a part to every soldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece. So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be”; this was to fulfill the Scripture: “They divided My outer garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.” Therefore the soldiers did these things. But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own household. After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, “I am thirsty.” A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

The sixth word or saying that Jesus spoke from the cross was the single Greek word tetelestai which means It is finished. Papyri receipts for taxes have been recovered with the word tetelestai written across them, meaning “paid in full.” This word on Jesus’ lips was significant. When He said, “It is finished” (not “I am finished”), He meant His redemptive work was completed. He had been made sin for people () and had suffered the penalty of God’s justice which sin deserved.
