A. Some of urs:
a. hanging out w/fam
b. easter baskets
c. going 2 church services
d. my personal fav:
1. biting the ears off the chocolate bunnies lol
B. Mine is the Family meal
a. Mom: Deviled eggs & potato salad
II. Tie-in: The thing about meals in the bible...
A. God frequently used meals to point to his mission or character
a. one o those meals is called the “Passover”
1. The Hebrews were in slavery in Egypt & God determined to
i. rescue them from bondage
ii. & adopt ‘em as his people through a new covenant
2. To accomplish this mission God raised up a leader named moses & sent him to Egypts Pharaoh w/the msg: “let my people go”
3. Pharaoh refused
i. so God sent plagues 2 not-so-gently change Pharaoh’s mind
4. The last plague was the death o 1st born son in ea. household.
5. To protect the Hebrews God gave ‘em an instruction & promise which is
Exodus 12:13–14 ESV
13 The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt. 14 “This day shall be for you a memorial day, and you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord; throughout your generations, as a statute forever, you shall keep it as a feast.
Ex 12:13-
i. Ea. Hebrew home was 2
-shelter in place based on fam unit (that’s a familiar situation)
-sacrifice a lamb, put the blood on the door posts & then
-make a meal o it & unleavened bread
Exodus 12:13 ESV
13 The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.
ii. For ea. hm that did, God would “pass over” & protect ‘em
b. God instructed his people to commemorate God’s saving work of rescuing them fro bondage by partaking in the meal ea. yr
B. God’s ultimate purpose was not simply the rescue o a people frm physical bondage
a. This was a foreshadowing (that is, show b4 hand) that God would ultimately rescue mankind from the bondage o sin
III. over 1,000yrs later Jesus reveals God’s ultimate rescue plan
A. The meal as usual
a. We presume Jesus & his 12 ate the passover meal ea. yr that they were w/him
b. the last time, however, Jesus would change their understanding 4ever (Matt records it in…)
Matthew 26:26–29 ESV
26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
A. The Shift
a. Jesus took what was a common yearly meal &, in the middle o it, took “a hard right” on it’s meaning
1. This time not just any lamb would due... He would b the sacrificial lamb
i. & instead o it being a people God would rescue from bondage
-It would be all peoples who has the choice to be rescued from bondage
*not o physcial slavery but the bondage o sin & death!
John 8:34–36 ESV
34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
B. The way he set us free:
a. Jesus surrendered himself 2b taken, tried, convicted (even though he did not derisive it) & then nailed 2 a cross
1. They beat him, mocked him, & flogged him b4 they crucified him.
i. Peter explains why in...
1 Peter 1:18–20 ESV
18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you
IV. As we reflect on this, listen to this song by Beth Becker
