Notes & Transcripts

Why do you call me good?

1.  When we call something good, we are saying nothing about the thing that we reference, but are confessing something about our own value system.  We betray our value system withot even knowing it.  {Freudian slip}

2. One of the things that brought Jesus opposition was the fact that people who considered themselves "good" were offended when Jesus suggested that their "goodness" was insufficient.  Or when I suggest that something you consider to be good, may not be good.

·         All our righteousness is as filthy rags.

·         Repentance is a pre-requisite for salvation or forgiveness.

·         Only God can truly define goodness because He is good.  If I say that you are a good basketball player you may be complimented by that but if Michael Jordan says that you are a good basketball player, that is something more.  Mike's words may make you a millionaire.

·         You can choose to stand in front of the cross or behind the cross.

3. Good people like it when preachers talk about bad things.  It makes them feel safe and hidden.  It makes them feel more smug about their minor discrepancies.

4. We can't experience God's goodness until we surrender our own.

It is God's response to our real self that reveals His great heart of love.  We know that others would not love us if they knew the truth about us - God loves us despiye the fact He knows our hearts.

Buttprints In The Sand

( A worthy parody of Footprints In The Sand)

One night I had a wondrous dream,

One set of footprints there was seen,

The footprints of my precious Lord,

But mine were not along the shore.

But then some stranger prints appeared,

And I asked the Lord, "What have we here?"

Those prints are large and round and neat,

"But Lord they are too big for feet."

"My child," He said in somber tones,

"For miles I carried you alone.

I challenged you to walk in faith,

But you refused and made me wait."

"You disobeyed, you would not grow,

The walk of faith, you would not know,

So I got tired, I got fed up,

And there I dropped you on your butt."

"Because in life there comes a time,

When one must fight and one must climb,

When one must rise and take a stand,

Or leave their buttprints in the sand."
