This verse is a double proverb:
Both are true independently
Put together it’s a powerful and rich teaching tool
Like a motor and gearbox - both powerful, but put together and they can move a mighty lorrie

A Common Evil

Proverbs 29:25a KJV 1900
The fear of man bringeth a snare: But whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe.

Leads men into sin

Aaron - golden calf - he feared the people gathering together against him
Peter to deny his Master before a others as Jesus was questioned before Pilate

Keeps many from conversion

How many people are afraid of what others will say
Persecution - afraid of what others may do if they do receive Jesus as their Saviour

Prevents others avowing their faith

Fearful that a friend or family member might know they do believe and trust in God
They are ashamed or fearful of what others may think
2 Timothy 1:8 KJV 1900
Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;

Hinders many in duties which require courage

Jonah did not want to go to Nineveh for the perception that he may be considered a false prophet if God forgives the city.
What will people think if I take this stand?
What will my Christian friends think if I resist following them into a questionable doctrine
David fleeing from Saul
1 Samuel 21:10–15 KJV 1900
And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath. And the servants of Achish said unto him, Is not this David the king of the land? did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands? And David laid up these words in his heart, and was sore afraid of Achish the king of Gath. And he changed his behaviour before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his beard. Then said Achish unto his servants, Lo, ye see the man is mad: wherefore then have ye brought him to me? Have I need of mad men, that ye have brought this fellow to play the mad man in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house?
David acted out in fear and it hindered his testimony

A Very Precious Safeguard

Proverbs 29:25b KJV 1900
The fear of man bringeth a snare: But whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe.
Nathan falling into my arms
This is a not demand, but rather a childlike trust in the Lord
Scared of lightning - boys would come into the same room

Trust brings safety from fear of man

Sermon Outlines on the Attributes of God God—Worthy of Our Trust (Prov. 29:25)—C. H. Spurgeon

God is with us, therefore we are strong, and need not fear.

We are determined, and will not fear.

We pray, and will not fear.

We prepare for the worst, and fear vanishes.

David learned through his actions based upon fear of Saul
1 Samuel 22:1–5 KJV 1900
David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father’s house heard it, they went down thither to him. And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men. And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab: and he said unto the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you, till I know what God will do for me. And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the hold. And the prophet Gad said unto David, Abide not in the hold; depart, and get thee into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hareth.
David learned through this that God was in control, and stronger than any man
Psalm 56 KJV 1900
To the chief Musician upon Jonath-elem-recho-kim, Michtam of David, when the Philistines took him in Gath. Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; He fighting daily oppresseth me. Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: For they be many that fight against me, O thou most High. What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I will praise his word, In God I have put my trust; I will not fear What flesh can do unto me. Every day they wrest my words: All their thoughts are against me for evil. They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, They mark my steps, When they wait for my soul. Shall they escape by iniquity? In thine anger cast down the people, O God. Thou tellest my wanderings: Put thou my tears into thy bottle: Are they not in thy book? When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: This I know; for God is for me. In God will I praise his word: In the Lord will I praise his word. In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid What man can do unto me. Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee. For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, That I may walk before God in the light of the living?

What is there to fear? What can man do unto us?

Romans 8:31 KJV 1900
What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

A Very Glorious Doctrine

Proverbs 29:25 KJV 1900
The fear of man bringeth a snare: But whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe.
Sermon Outlines on the Attributes of God God—Worthy of Our Trust (Prov. 29:25)—C. H. Spurgeon

From the damning and conquering power of sin.

From the overcoming force of temptation.

From the deadening effect of sorrow.

From the destroying force of Satan.

From death, and hell, and every evil.

From all injury which men can inflict.

Will you fear a worm, or trust your God?

Break the snare in which fear has entangled you.

Enter the palace of safety by the door of trust.

Sermon Outlines on the Attributes of God God—Worthy of Our Trust (Prov. 29:25)—C. H. Spurgeon

The soul that cannot entirely trust God, whether man be pleased or displeased, can never long be true to Him; for while you are eyeing man you are losing God, and stabbing Christianity at the very heart—Thomas Manton

Matthew 23:37 KJV 1900
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
Trust in the Lord is running to Him, seeking shelter from the fearfulness by coming closer to Him and confidence knowing that everything is going to be alright with the Lord!
As a child of God, we can run to our God and trust that God will do all things good.
If you are not a child of God, why not? Aren’t you tired of looking at the storm of illness, death, financial uncertainty, and despair? There’s a better way! Trusting in God for salvation bring certainty of being part of His family.
