Self-examination should take place on the basis of God’s revelation of himself and the example he sets believers in Jesus Christ. It is especially important before confessing one’s sins.

Haggai 1:5 ESV
Now, therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts: Consider your ways.

A lack of self-examination leads to pride and self-delusion

1 Corinthians 11:28–29 ESV
Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.

Self-examination is not easy because of humanity’s fallen nature

Psalm 19:12–14 ESV
Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults. Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
