Sermon on the mount: To the disciples
Salt and Light
Matthew 5:17–20 NASB95
17 “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18 “For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 “Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 “For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Law and the Prophets

Torah and the Tanak together they represent the entirety of scripture. God’s revelation of Himself to the Jewish people.
Ceremonial Law
Leviticus 1:1–4 NASB95
1 Then the Lord called to Moses and spoke to him from the tent of meeting, saying, 2 “Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When any man of you brings an offering to the Lord, you shall bring your offering of animals from the herd or the flock. 3 ‘If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he shall offer it, a male without defect; he shall offer it at the doorway of the tent of meeting, that he may be accepted before the Lord. 4 ‘He shall lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, that it may be accepted for him to make atonement on his behalf.

First National Bank 351 and Johnson
When they started building it there was a big billboard “Coming Soon” with a picture of what the bank would look like.
When the bank was finished, the sign had completed it’s purpose. The sign was fulfilled, not abolished.

Jesus fulfilled the law.

Matthew 1:22 NASB95
22 Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
Matthew 13:35 NASB95
35 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: “I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden since the foundation of the world.”
John 19:36 NASB95
36 For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, “Not a bone of Him shall be broken.”
Luke 24:44 NASB95
44 Now He said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”
Jesus fulfilled the law.
The Civil Law
Deuteronomy 24:10–11 NASB95
10 “When you make your neighbor a loan of any sort, you shall not enter his house to take his pledge. 11 “You shall remain outside, and the man to whom you make the loan shall bring the pledge out to you.

Jesus simplified the law.

Matthew 22:37–40 NASB95
37 And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 “This is the great and foremost commandment. 39 “The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 “On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”

The 10 commandments

Jesus elevated the Law

Matthew 5:21–22 NASB95
21 “You have heard that the ancients were told, ‘You shall not commit murder’ and ‘Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.’ 22 “But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘You good-for-nothing,’ shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.
Matthew 5:27–28 NASB95
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’; 28 but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Right eye causes you to stumble : tear it out.
Right hand causes you to stumble: cut if off.
For it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
Jesus elevated the law.
Matthew 5:20 NASB95
20 “For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
These were professional Jews. Their sole purpose was to study, keep, teach, copy and protect the Law and the Prophets. They knew it better than anyone.
Motorcycle cops- They go through an unbelievable training course. They ride through cones, they will have people throw 4x4 in front of them to ride over. Those guys can flat our ride.
You have to ride better than they do.
Not one of our motor cops have a personally owned motorcycle.
Here’s the deal.... Mo. Hwy. 160 leads into Branson, Mo. It is curvy, and beautiful. Tree covered and smooth. We rode that yesterday and I found myself praising God for the gift of His creation and being able to enjoy it on a bike.
We ride better than the motor cops, not because we are technically better; we aren’t. But they ride for a paycheck, we ride for the love of riding.
The Pharisees and scribes followed the law and the prophets to obtain their righteousness. We should have reverence and love for the Law and the Prophets and obey Christ because of His righteousness given to us.
Saved by Grace.
Matthew 25:23 NASB95
23 “His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’
