2 Samuel Notes
2 Samuel Chapter 24
At this point, David decides to take a census to take an account of his army. There could have been a legitimate excuse on why one would consider this, but David merely did this to satisfy his prideful lust. The Lord then burn with anger and told David, through the prophet Gad, that he would have to choose his punishment. God then inflicted his people with three days of a plague. David cried unto God and asked to punish him and his family since everyone else was innocent. He then told David to build an alter on a farmer's threshing floor. The farmer was trying to GIVE the land and everything else to him, but David refused and said that he did not want to present burnt offerenings to the Lord on something that did not cost him anything.

2 Samuel 24:24 NIV
But the king replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen and paid fifty shekels of silver for them.
2 Samuel 24:10 NIV
David was conscience-stricken after he had counted the fighting men, and he said to the Lord, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. Now, Lord, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing.”
2 Samuel 24:10–17 NIV
David was conscience-stricken after he had counted the fighting men, and he said to the Lord, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. Now, Lord, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing.” Before David got up the next morning, the word of the Lord had come to Gad the prophet, David’s seer: “Go and tell David, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you.’ ” So Gad went to David and said to him, “Shall there come on you three years of famine in your land? Or three months of fleeing from your enemies while they pursue you? Or three days of plague in your land? Now then, think it over and decide how I should answer the one who sent me.” David said to Gad, “I am in deep distress. Let us fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy is great; but do not let me fall into human hands.” So the Lord sent a plague on Israel from that morning until the end of the time designated, and seventy thousand of the people from Dan to Beersheba died. When the angel stretched out his hand to destroy Jerusalem, the Lord relented concerning the disaster and said to the angel who was afflicting the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand.” The angel of the Lord was then at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. When David saw the angel who was striking down the people, he said to the Lord, “I have sinned; I, the shepherd, have done wrong. These are but sheep. What have they done? Let your hand fall on me and my family.”
New reference note
Romans 1:14–15 NIV
I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome.
Paul mentions that the gospel is not an exclusive "club" but is for everyone. The greek translation says its for "Greek and Barbarians."
Romans 1:28–32 NIV
Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
God is loving to us but he is also just. He will abandon us to our sins if we continue living in it. He does this so that our sin could take us to a breaking point and possibly lead us back to Christ. Paul demonstrates and even practices this with the church of Corinth when he tells the congregation to give over this man to satan so that his sinful nature can be destroyed and his life might be saved.
Yes, God loves all and wills that all be saved, but since we have free will God cannot interfere with our decisions to live in sin.
2 Samuel 24:1–9 NIV
Again the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and he incited David against them, saying, “Go and take a census of Israel and Judah.” So the king said to Joab and the army commanders with him, “Go throughout the tribes of Israel from Dan to Beersheba and enroll the fighting men, so that I may know how many there are.” But Joab replied to the king, “May the Lord your God multiply the troops a hundred times over, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king want to do such a thing?” The king’s word, however, overruled Joab and the army commanders; so they left the presence of the king to enroll the fighting men of Israel. After crossing the Jordan, they camped near Aroer, south of the town in the gorge, and then went through Gad and on to Jazer. They went to Gilead and the region of Tahtim Hodshi, and on to Dan Jaan and around toward Sidon. Then they went toward the fortress of Tyre and all the towns of the Hivites and Canaanites. Finally, they went on to Beersheba in the Negev of Judah. After they had gone through the entire land, they came back to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. Joab reported the number of the fighting men to the king: In Israel there were eight hundred thousand able-bodied men who could handle a sword, and in Judah five hundred thousand.

Throne of David
λόγος
Says in 1 Chronicles and in Septugint that David was lead by Satan to do the Census, not God.
Philippians 1:6 NIV
being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
Paul and Timothy both write the certainty of God's calling in peoples lives. We are to be sure that if God started a good work within us, he will finish it unto completion. This should remove uncertainty in our plans for Christ.
Philippians 1:9–10 NIV
And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,
This is a statement not only to the church of that time but a message for all denominations of the Christian faith...let love overflow and continue to grow in knowledge of the word and discernment; WE SHALL NOT LOSE WHAT REALLY MATTERS.
2 Peter 2:3 NIV
In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.
I think here in this verse, we get a glimps of what a false teacher ultimately wants...self gain and money. We will know them by these fruits! It even says that God condemned them long ago, which means that God knew who would be a heritic and made the judgment for them.
2 Peter 2:5–7 NIV
if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others; if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless
In this verse we are given a glimps of God's NON-contradicting character of being a just but loving God. We can see that in the midst of destruction of sinful individuals, there was always an act of mercy to those who still showed un-relenting devotion to Him in the midst of temptation and debauchery. People seem to get upset over the way God judges his people and think that he is contradicting. God is an infinite being; he deals with sin in an infinite way. One extreme deserves another extreme. He offers salvation through the belief of His son; rejection will result in the same punishment the angels were given (they served, worshiped, and tasted glory before the fall).
2 Peter 2:20–22 NIV
If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and, “A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.”
WOW
2 Peter 3:9 NIV
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
Jesus is not slow in his coming to the earth, but is being patient so that all of mankind can know who HE is and so that everyone has the opportunity to call Jesus Lord and Savior. This says something about us...every time we try and rush God to come to this Earth to save us all, we are actually telling him to ignore those that have not yet received the message of salvation. This in fact is an act opposite of Love, which is the most important commandment given to us by Jesus. Be patient and do what you are supposed to do...Love others and tell them about Jesus.
1 John 2:6 NIV
Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.
Verse 5 states that by obeying God's word truley shows how much we love him. So...this means that love is correlated to the obedience of God's word... John later states in 1John 5:3 "In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome." God's word equates to, yes what is written in the old testimate, but more importatntly, what Jesus comanded us; Love the lord God with all your entierity and to love others as you love yourself. This then has john state the next verse. We have to walk and live the way Jesus did if we claim to live in HIM.
1 John 2:15–16 NIV
Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.
The word love is the greek word, Agapao ( A love in a social or moral sense).

Piety. This word occurs but once in the Authorized Version: “Let them learn first to show piety at home,” better, “toward their own household” or family. 1 Tim. 5:4. The choice of this word here instead of the more usual equivalents of “godliness,” “reverence,” and the like, was probably determined by the special sense of pietas, as “erga parentes,” i.e. toward parents.

Philippians 2:12
Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear.
Ex 19:16
On the morning of the third day, thunder roared and lightning flashed, and a dense cloud came down on the mountain. There was a long, loud blast from a ram’s horn, and all the people trembled.
Ex 14.31
When the people of Israel saw the mighty power that the Lord had unleashed against the Egyptians, they were filled with awe before him. They put their faith in the Lord and in his servant Moses.
Psalm 76:7-8
No wonder you are greatly feared!
Who can stand before you when your anger explodes?
8 From heaven you sentenced your enemies;
the earth trembled and stood silent before you.
Pr 16:6
6Unfailing love and faithfulness make atonement for sin.
By fearing the Lord, people avoid evil.
Pr 8:13
13 All who fear the Lord will hate evil.
Therefore, I hate pride and arrogance,
corruption and perverse speech.
The fear of the Lord should compell us to resist sin
The fear of the Lord brings us wisdom. When we lack fear, there is no wisdom, where there is no wisdom, we eat the fruit of our ways and are filled with the fruit of our schemes; for the waywardness of the simple will kill us (Pr 131-32)
May imply numious awe (Job 37:23-24) or respect (Ex 9:30)
Revelation 1:12-18
2 When I turned to see who was speaking to me, I saw seven gold lampstands. 13 And standing in the middle of the lampstands was someone like the Son of Man.* He was wearing a long robe with a gold sash across his chest. 14 His head and his hair were white like wool, as white as snow. And his eyes were like flames of fire. 15 His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace, and his voice thundered like mighty ocean waves. 16 He held seven stars in his right hand, and a sharp two-edged sword came from his mouth. And his face was like the sun in all its brilliance.
17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as if I were dead. But he laid his right hand on me and said, “Don’t be afraid! I am the First and the Last. 18 I am the living one. I died, but look—I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and the grave.*
Revelation 4
1 and 2 TIMOTHY
- Paul talked about false teachings. He said some where talking about myths and spiritual lineages that would take the focus off the gospel.
- Paul said his life would be used as a prime example of how God is patient with even the worst of sinners.
Fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave us.
- God mentions to Timothy time and time again to not argue against others about petty things
TITUS
Chapter 3:3-8
We were foolish at one point. We were living Godless lives with a self-god image. We worked and toiled to please ourselves. We satisfied our flesh with the sweetness of lust and materialistic things; stepping on people to get where we wanted to go, but then our God (holy and righteous in every possible aspect) crossed space-time and entered humanity. Falsly accused, a guilty/innocence was displayed upon a cross for all to see. Blood dripping from his hands as he cried for the forgivness of mankind, He hung in shame and carried the sins of this world. How could such a God/man plead forgivness and yet turn away rightful judgment towards those who pierced and mocked him? How could he have compassion for the very people that betrayed Him? In a somber tone he whispered, "It is finished...". Then, the veil was ripped; our sins were washed away. He gave us a new life through the Holy Spirit not because of our righteousness but because of His mercy. He gave us confidence and assurance that we have power to overcome the greatest of foes. His grace guarantees us victory even in our defeat. We have been given a spirit of power and not of timidity nor fear.
This teaching is what we should hold on to; to preach to those who have ears to hear. [Go and make disciples and declare his word to the ends of the earth. You will be empowered with the Holy Spirit and be given spiritual giftings to accompany your ministyr. As it is said by our Lord, "these miraculous sings will accompany those who beleive...they will cast out demons in my name, speak new languages, be protected agains all evil, and lay hands upon the sick and be healed."]
HEBREWS
The word said Jesus had to die a human death to overcome the power OF death. This way he was able to set free all in the bondage of death.
He came into to the world in our likness because he was meant to save the descendants of Abraham; to become our ultimate high priest.
In this manner, it is only through him that can take away our sins; it is in this manner that we can be helped when we are being tested with humanly suffering.
High Priests - Head priest; the great one from his brothers; ruler of the house of God. No physical defect as well as holy in conduct. Cannot remove headdress in grief. Had to be consecrated. Dday of Atonement (10th daty of the 7th month) atonement for the sins of the poeple. Jesus was and is the ultimate high priest. He fulfills the requirements and more. He himself is sinless, unlike the old high priests. He only can attone sin since he is still the active high priest. He is in the Holy of Holies. He was the ultimate sacrifice for our sins.
HEBREWS 7:23-25 " There were many priests under the old system, for death prevented them from remaining in office. But because Jesus lives forever, his preisthood lasts forever. Therefore he is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf."
The Solid Rock
The Solid Rock
Matthew 7:24
Jesus ends the sermon on the mount with building a solid foundation.
"Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won't collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn't obey it is foolish, like a persion who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash"
In stratigraphy, bedrock is consolidated rock underlying the surface of a terrestrial planet, usually the Earth. Above the bedrock is usually an area of broken and weathered unconsolidated rock in the basal subsoil.

Authority
Authority in Christ
What is authority?
Definition
Authority is deligated power; it's value depends on the force behind the user.
Columbus discovering America (How were these people able to take America?) Guns and Power
McDondalds does serve breakfast after 10:30 AM...If you have a gun
Teaching/Substitutes/Security/Admin.
Teachers are seen in having authority over teaching...that is why when a substitue walks in...kids do not respect as much
Securities and admin are seen with more fear...in most cases.
God's Authority (Created Mand and Everything)
JOHN 1:1
1 In the beginning the Word already existed.
The Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
2 He existed in the beginning with God.
3 God created everything through him,
and nothing was created except through him.
4 The Word gave life to everything that was created,*
and his life brought light to everyone.
5 The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness can never extinguish it.*
Testimony (I)
Living a normal life...not rebellious; not troubled
No urgency in change
No authority to handle situations (It's like trying to do a job you are not certified for.)
Where does Authority Come From?
God's Authority
ROMANS 13:1
Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.
Man's authority (Given by God to rule the earth; sinned and took it away)
God spoke through Abraham, Moses, and through the prophets.
Then, we asked for a king...so He spoke through the kings as well
Through all the old testimate, an ordinary person had no authority to purposely fulfill the will of God. He didn't speak to them. Levites had to pray on their behalf.
Jesus came into the picture and changed everything
HEBREWS 1:1
Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. 2 And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe.
During the transfiguration of Christ, Jesus was accompanied by both Moses and Elijah.
Matthew 17 1-7
Six days later Jesus took Peter and the two brothers, James and John, and led them up a high mountain to be alone. 2 As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed so that his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light. 3 Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus.
4 Peter exclaimed, “Lord, it’s wonderful for us to be here! If you want, I’ll make three shelters as memorials*—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
5 But even as he spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him.” 6 The disciples were terrified and fell face down on the ground.
7 Then Jesus came over and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” 8 And when they looked up, Moses and Elijah were gone, and they saw only Jesus.
Moses represented the authority of the Law and Elijah represented the authority of the prophets...They left and God spoke "this is my son...listen to him"
What gives someone athority or power?
A Boss Gives us authority to do a certain Job
My Teaching certificate gives me authority to teach
Declare Jesus as Lord and believe in his death and resurection
Give your life to Christ
Romans 1:5 "Through Christ, God has given us the privilege and authority as apostles to tell Gentiles everywhere what God has done for them, so that they will believe and obey him, bringining glory to his name."
John 16:15
15 All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’
The Holy Spirit is the main source of our authority.
No one moved in the spirit other then the prophets in the Old Testimate

Acts...Pentacost...the spirit enabled the apostles to go out and do God's will.

TESTIMONY (II)

How do we act in authority?
Authority has to be given...when given, we have to accept it and use it in confidence.

The repeater (Repeats what you say...never gets it)
The talker (Totally ignores)
“Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seeds. 4 As he scattered them across his field, some seeds fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate them. 5 Other seeds fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The seeds sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow. 6 But the plants soon wilted under the hot sun, and since they didn’t have deep roots, they died. 7 Other seeds fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants. 8 Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they produced a crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted! 9 Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”

Jesus gives us authority to do anything in His will and greater
JOHN 14:12
12 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.
MARK 16:17-18
17 These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name, and they will speak in new languages.* 18 They will be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything poisonous, it won’t hurt them. They will be able to place their hands on the sick, and they will be healed.”
Confidence is also very important
If we don't know what we have we engage in warefare of the world
We are always on Defense...Let's be Offensive
HEBREWS 4:16
16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
Confidence is arrogance in the eyes of the insecure
DON'T BE SCARED
GO OUT AND SHARE THE WORD
GO OUT AND DECLARE HEALING
GO OUT AND DECLARE PEACE

1 Samuel 1:8–10 NIV
Her husband Elkanah would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?” Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s house. In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly.
Bitterly
The Hebrew translation gives us a better understand what it meant for her to weep Bitterly. The Hebrew word translates to Desperation.
Matthew 1:23 NIV
“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
God with us!!!!
This was a game changer for the entire world.
Not only God with us BUT God in us.
Numbers 11:21–23 NIV
But Moses said, “Here I am among six hundred thousand men on foot, and you say, ‘I will give them meat to eat for a whole month!’ Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?” The Lord answered Moses, “Is the Lord’s arm too short? Now you will see whether or not what I say will come true for you.”
Numbers 11:21
Moses was questioning God and the impossibility that can only be related to a finite being. God responded infinitly by stating, is my arm to short?

The eye can not say to the hand, I do not need you.
Lovers of pleasure instead of lovers of God.
Jesus says deny yourself life up your cross and follow him.
Suffering in Christ is what it's about when you want to go into full ministry.
Arm yourself in the way of thinking. We are to serve not to get served.
We should not hide the persecution from non believers
The Conquring of sin doesn't come with out suffereing.
We need to suffer to remove sin.
Whoever suffers in the flesh ceases from sin. No longer of human passion but the will of God.

Prayers aren't always for a means for an end. Be self controlled and sober minded. When Christ returns, you want to have a great prayer life. Be self-control. Limit what comes in your mind. Love one another earnestly.
Do not be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. REJOICE

Pursuite of God
Chapter 1
Prevenient Grace - God must have first sought the man.
- Enlightenment first then desiring, seeking, and praying follows.
- He places an urge for us to pursue Him.
- Our desire to pursue God originates with Him, but the continuation of that pursuite is on our own end.
- We never leave his hand after the initial pursue.
- To experience the Devine nature of God, there has to be a reciprocation between man and God...(WE pursue hard...His divine experience is granted)
- Justification of faith relieves us from legalism
- Full knowledge of one personality by another cannot be achieved in one encounter.
- Being made in His image we have within us the capacity to know Him.
- Moses was bold to ask God to show him His glory. Huge display of Ardor
- The Seeker and the Finder
- We have to be willing like Paul and count everything as lost to gain all that we can about the Glory of God
- Complacency is a deadly foe of all spiritual growth
- Acute desire must be present or there will be no manifestation
- There has to be a striping of our theology to pursue God. We cannot have anything weighing us down.
- God has to be our inheritance. Our only desire in our heart. Materialistic things must melt away to encounter God in a way few have.
- The man who has God for his treasure has all things in one. Levi received no inheritance when the Lord divided the land but inherited God himself.
Chapter II
The Blessedness of Possessing Nothing
-In the beginning, Adam's heart was only throbbing for the ultimate creator, God; not the thousands of gifts He gave him.
- There will always be an inner struggle within our heart; the materialistic things that fight over the throne of God.
- The tyranny of our inner soul needing materialistic things was addressed by Christ himself, "“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever shall lose his life for my sake shall find it”
- Abraham and Issac
When Abraham held Issac, a love of what God promised began to develop. Issac was a gift from God. He was a promise. It was good, just as education, finances, and relationships. When Issac was older, Abraham's love for him bordered upon the perilous. That is when God stepped in to save what was meant to be as a gift; not to take the throne place God placed in every man's heart.
- God really challenged Abraham. He fought for the place of his heart and wanted to make sure that nobody was there. Sometimes God gifts us things and we become too attached to the gift and not the gifter
-When we are torn from the riches of our lives and forged in the refining fire of God, we then learn that we do not posses anything so we then become poor in spirit
- We have to root out the things that are not of God. It's going to hurt like hell but we must non the less do it .
Pursuite of God
Chapter 1
Prevenient Grace - God must have first sought the man.
Enlightenment first then desiring, seeking, and praying follows.
He places an urge for us to pursue Him.
Our desire to pursue God originates with Him, but the continuation of that pursuite is on our own end.
We never leave his hand after the initial pursue.
To experience the Devine nature of God, there has to be a reciprocation between man and God...(WE pursue hard...His divine experience is granted)
Justification of faith relieves us from legalism
Full knowledge of one personality by another cannot be achieved in one encounter.
Being made in His image we have within us the capacity to know Him.
Moses was bold to ask God to show him His glory. Huge display of Ardor
The Seeker and the Finder
We have to be willing like Paul and count everything as lost to gain all that we can about the Glory of God
Complacency is a deadly foe of all spiritual growth
Acute desire must be present or there will be no manifestation
There has to be a striping of our theology to pursue God. We cannot have anything weighing us down.
God has to be our inheritance. Our only desire in our heart. Materialistic things must melt away to encounter God in a way few have.
The man who has God for his treasure has all things in one. Levi received no inheritance when the Lord divided the land but inherited God himself.

Chapter III
Matthew 5
"God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth." -Matthew 5:5
The word humble is translated from the greek word praus which has three occurences in scripture. It is the mildness of disposition, gentleness of spirit, and meekness.
Meekness is when one shows acceptance with God's dealings in and around us without disputing or resisting. They are people who totally rely on God rather than on their own strength to defend them against injustice. Meekness towards evil people means knowing God is permitting the injuries they inflict, that He is using them to purify his elcet, and that He will deliver His elect in His time.
It is the opposite of self-assertiveness and self-inters. It all comes from trusting in God
We will inherit the whole earth...remember, the whole earth was ours in the beginning, we then gave it over to satan and in the future Jesus will restore ownership. This means that we shall
"You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and tramped underfoot as worthless." - Matthew 5:13
Jesus is telling us that we (as a people of God) act upon his behalf to flavor the earth with his glory and righteousness. We are to preserve what holiness remains on the earth. We are to also cause a thirst in others who do not know Jesus, so they have a desire to KNOW God. These natural uses for salt are metephorically applying to what we should be doing for the earth before Jesus comes back.
"But I warn you - unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven" Matthew 5 :20
Jesus is teaching us to rely on the convictions of the holy spirit (the law and Jesus before his death) and not the convictions of others because they may be in the wrong and/or may be distorting the word of God, which in this case the Pharisees were apparently hidding under a phosod.
"You have heard the commandment that says, 'You must not commit adultery.' But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery wither her in his heart." Matthew 5 :27-28
Jesus is clear in what type of new comand he brings. He takes the 10 commandments, which cannot be followed and fullfiled by any human, and raises them to the 10th degree! Why did Jesus make it harder? Can he even do that?
First of all, Jesus came to fulfill the law...which means that he would have to live a perfectly sinless life. To that I say he has done that very thing. Now, Jesus made them harder to drive people to seek out a savior. "How is it possible to keep these comandments? We are surley doomed to hell. We will fail and need a savior."
Jesus is wanting us to respond in this very mannor so that we are driven to the cross and the purpose of Him coming to the earth. HE is the only one to save us and HE is the only one to make us clean and restore us for judgment day.
Looking at anyone lustfully means we would have committed adultery. This is very hard to do through the span of a human life-time. Jesus says to "come to him, all who are weary..." We are surely to become weary when trying to uphold the laws and trying to become a "perfect" person.

Logos Assignment:
Before interacting with any commentaries or study Bibles, read through Psalm 96 and contribute to the Community notes in our group (if you need a refresher, watch this screencast I made). I want us to come up with as many observations as possible without consulting outside resources—just you and the text. Add these observations (at least 20 per person) to the Community notes for our group.
Create a digital study Bible layout and save it (this video shows you how to save a layout). Then interact with both the FSB and NET Bible on Psalm 96. Add significant interpretive insights to the discussions section of our group at faithlife.com.
Capstone Project: Talk with your group about ideas for the capstone project (by whatever communication you choose). Bring two to three ideas to the next session.
Discussion Questions:
Have you ever used the OIA(C) method of interpretation?
What is the difference between observation and interpretation? What happens when interpretation is done without considering observation?
What are the advantages and dangers of doing Bible study on your own? What have been specific tools available in Logos that you have used in personal Bible study?
Why is it valuable for commentaries to answer why a text means what it means?

Logos Assignment:
Use the inline search tool to search every time the Person of God is found near the word "reign." Find a connection and start a note file on God's reign with a note or two that utilize attachment points. Does Psalm 96 appear in your results? If not, how might you edit your search syntax so it does? Can you edit your syntax to include the concept of judgment along with reign?
As you interact with passages from your search, think through applications for Psalm 96 and points of correlation. What passages add to your understanding of God's reign? Add at least one of these observations to our Community Notes. It may be helpful to you to run a passage guide on Psalm 96 and look at the Cross References section and the Parallel passages section.
Run a Factbook on Rahab from Psalm 89.10. What did you find? Add a note about your findings.
Capstone Project: Narrow the focus of your capstone project and let me know what it is.
Discussion Questions:
Do you agree with Bock's assertion that application at the "what are we to do" level is more difficult than the application at the "who we are to be" level? Why?
Many conservative scholars agree that there is one correct interpretation for any particular text (the author's intent), but then concede that there are almost an infinite amount of applications. Do you agree? Does Bock agree?
How does the "analogy of faith" help us in interpretation? What exactly is it?
