Luke 12:8-10

Today we are going to talk about a passage that stands out when you read it
It goes against the teachings of some, But it is an important verse in the Bible
We are going to be looking at Luke 12:8-10
Let me set up a little back ground.
Jesus is teaching and so many people have gathered around him that they are almost trampling each other. And Jesus pulls His disciples aside before he starts preaching and before the disciples start seeing to the needs of the people. Because as Jesus would teach the disciples would talk to people see if they are understanding.
They would help with the ministry.
They would also listen and learn
They would pray
Jesus wants to talk to his disciples and warns them about the Pharisees And to follow the Holy Spirit
Then we have this curious passage
Luke 12:8–10 LEB
“And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before people, the Son of Man also will acknowledge him before the angels of God, but the one who denies me before people will be denied before the angels of God. And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him, but to the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven.
Pray
Blasphemy
Now there is a word that isn’t used much anymore except by those religious fanatics, who do things like in Egypt a man was sentence to six years in prison for putting blasphemous pictures on his facebook account.
No I do not know the story I just remember the headline
But we don’t really use that word anymore so what does it mean?
“great disrespect shown to God or to something holy: something said or done that is disrespectful to God” - Merriam-Webster
“The Act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for a God”Wiki
So Jesus tells us that the unforgivable sin
The deadly sin, Is not murder, Not greed or lust or adultery, gluttony or even doubt, or even even denying Christ. Look at Peter while Jesus was on the Cross. He denied him three times and thus he is known even though he does so much more. It is that which makes him famous
Even though this are sins that will break your relationship with God Break your relationship with others, Challenge your faith
But all of these can be forgiven but the unforgivable sin is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit

Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit

The unforgivable Sin
This is the act of rejecting or hardening your heart against the Holy Spirit
This is not accepting “Jesus into your heart” but it is more than that it is not being a follower of God
Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is not abiding in Christ
John 15:5 ESV
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
We must be in Christ
That’s why the greatest commandment isn’t a “don’t” or a “do” verses
It is Love the Lord our God with all that you are
Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is unforgivable because you don’t let the empowering Holy Spirit work within you, the Blood of Christ will not cover you and when you are before the judgment throne there will be no advocate but just a “I don’t know you.”
Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is a dangerous sin
And people do it and some times they don’t even realize they are doing it
You can know all the right words, You can call yourself a Christian. You can do all the right things. You can be a good person. You can be the right kind of neighbor
But if you are not abiding or existing in God
If you are not a true washed in the blood, accepted as lord and savior, believed in you hears, confessed your sin, committed to his ways. Adopted into the family of God. Sanctifying, on the road to glorification
You are guilty of blasphemy the Holy Spirit
Yes if you are a true believer you will do. You will be the right kind of person. You will do the things that God has commanded. Like read your Bible. Tell others of Christ. Etc
Look at the Pharisees. They knew the verses. They knew the theology. They knew the Law. They were the right kind of people. And did that help them, no. Because they (not all of them, but as a group) did not believe they blasphemed the Holy Spirit. They rejected it and all its power.
Might be someone in this room that is rejecting the Holy Spirit.
Don’t care if you said you were a Christian if you never accepted the Holy Spirit you were never really a Christian. You were the grain that heard the word of God and believed it to be true but was quickly eaten by the weeds. Time to stop rejecting The holy spirit but following Him.
Let the power of the Holy Spirit move over you
I don’t believe you can loose salvation once saved I do believe not every who says saved is. But some of you are saved and might have decided to not blaspheme the HS but to put it on mute. Not rejecting. Just not listening

Next Steps

Time to open you heart to the Holy Spirit
Stop being a stiff necked people
I realize that some of you are just where you need to be
You believe have received and are as a result doing
Don’t become relaxed or slacker
Don’t allow your actions to lead others to blasphemy the HS
