Introduction
In this portion of scripture, there are eight different responses to Jesus. Each one represents an experience in the usage or lack of the usage of the gift of faith.Faith is one of those great commodities that God looks for in our lives, yet He has given it to each one of us.
Romans 12:3 CSB
3 For by the grace given to me, I tell everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he should think. Instead, think sensibly, as God has distributed a measure of faith to each one.
In originates in our soul, when we see Jesus and we respond to love we feel from Him.
Martin Luther said, “Faith is a living, daring confidence in God’s grace, so sure and certain that a man could stake his life on it a thousand times.”
Faith then is exposed in the New Testament, as not effort or a striving or restless seeking, but a response to God.Hebrews defines it in
Hebrews 11:1 CSB
1 Now faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen.
In this portion of Mark, we find faith exercised or the lack of it in eight categories when people come face to face with Jesus.
Bible Verse
Mark 5:21–43 CSB
21 When Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the sea. 22 One of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet 23 and begged him earnestly, “My little daughter is dying. Come and lay your hands on her so that she can get well and live.” 24 So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd was following and pressing against him. 25 Now a woman suffering from bleeding for twelve years 26 had endured much under many doctors. She had spent everything she had and was not helped at all. On the contrary, she became worse. 27 Having heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his clothing. 28 For she said, “If I just touch his clothes, I’ll be made well.” 29 Instantly her flow of blood ceased, and she sensed in her body that she was healed of her affliction. 30 Immediately Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothes?” 31 His disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing against you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’ ” 32 But he was looking around to see who had done this. 33 The woman, with fear and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him, and told him the whole truth. 34 “Daughter,” he said to her, “your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be healed from your affliction.” 35 While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue leader’s house and said, “Your daughter is dead. Why bother the teacher anymore?” 36 When Jesus overheard what was said, he told the synagogue leader, “Don’t be afraid. Only believe.” 37 He did not let anyone accompany him except Peter, James, and John, James’s brother. 38 They came to the leader’s house, and he saw a commotion—people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep.” 40 They laughed at him, but he put them all outside. He took the child’s father, mother, and those who were with him, and entered the place where the child was. 41 Then he took the child by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum” (which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, get up”). 42 Immediately the girl got up and began to walk. (She was twelve years old.) At this they were utterly astounded. 43 Then he gave them strict orders that no one should know about this and told them to give her something to eat.

1. Desperate Faith

Explanation
We see it in Jairus In Jairus, we find faith born out of difficulties-
Mark 5:21–24 CSB
21 When Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the sea. 22 One of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet 23 and begged him earnestly, “My little daughter is dying. Come and lay your hands on her so that she can get well and live.” 24 So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd was following and pressing against him.
He was a man of prominence, wealth, and power. He was a religious ruler of the synagogue, which meant that he was a leading elder in the local fellowship of Jews.He only had one daughter, 12 years of age, who was lying at the point of death. All of the other resources of healing had been exhausted. In desperation and great risk of losing everything he had, he fell at the feet of Jesus and pleaded, “Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.”The invitation from the Greek is “Insistent”, “I beg you please” and you find Jesus went with him. That is always the response to authentic God-given faith.
Application
There are some of us right now who face life’s impossible situations.Situations that are so hard that makes you feel like you have to display a special kind of faith. We do not have to produce faith to get God’s attention. He has our attention and wants us to exercise this daring/desperate kind of faith. The difficulties of life in desperation cause us to reach out.We reach forth out of our comfort. Desperation becomes the exercising of faith. It is the leap. But this kind of faith grows. It was with Jairus and it grew on him.He moved from desperation to confidence, as Jesus turned to go with him.

2. Superstitious Faith

Explanation
The faith of the woman who touched Jesus in the crowd.
Mark 5:25–30 CSB
25 Now a woman suffering from bleeding for twelve years 26 had endured much under many doctors. She had spent everything she had and was not helped at all. On the contrary, she became worse. 27 Having heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his clothing. 28 For she said, “If I just touch his clothes, I’ll be made well.” 29 Instantly her flow of blood ceased, and she sensed in her body that she was healed of her affliction. 30 Immediately Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothes?”
Mark 5:33–34 CSB
33 The woman, with fear and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him, and told him the whole truth. 34 “Daughter,” he said to her, “your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be healed from your affliction.”
In her, we see a kind of faith that arises out of a personal need within of ourselves. She had tried physicians, none had helped her.Luke a physician himself simply said, “The woman could not be healed by anyone.”She had tried all the none prescriptions for her illness.11 were listed in the Talmud.Ashes of an ostrich egg, in a linen rag in summer, and in a cotton rag in winterBarleycorn from the dung of a white she-donkey.TonicsAstringentsEtc..But nothing worked. In the meantime, she had been suspect. She could not live in her own house. She was ostracized from society.Leviticus 12:19-25Helps us understand that her sickness made her ceremonially unclean. She was treated like a leper. That was why she was able to get through the crowd so readily. People moved aside when she came through.Mark tells us that the woman had heard reports about Jesus. There is a motivating power behind her faith. She had heard about this Jesus. “If I touch even His garments, I shall be made well.”Her faith was imperfect, superstitious faith, she seemed to think that the power of Jesus was magical or mechanical, that there was no need for him to know of what she did or who she was.She touched Him. She suddenly felt in her body a deep physical sensation, which gave her health and hope. And Jesus, “Questioned who touched me.” With fear and trembling, she came forward to identify herself. She fell at His feet and Mark says she told Jesus, “The whole truth”.The whole truth of her sickness, her rejection, her loneliness, and her despair brought about liberation. And Jesus said, “Go in peace. Your faith has made you well.”
Application
Her touch was expected. Her touch was one of persistence. She would not give up until she was healed. Her touch was one of faith in Jesus. This kind of faith is somewhat frowned upon in baptist circles. We see it here that Jesus clearly didn’t frown upon. It actually begs the question of where the miracle began? That is where the miracle began. In this almost superstitious belief that Jesus could heal her. The actual healing was only the result. The problem is not this “superstitious faith” this faith might be just what brings your to a relationship with Jesus. The problem is to stay here forever. Your faith never growing past this point.

3. Individual Faith

Explanation
Disciples The disciples’ reaction to the question, “Who touched me” is the third type of faith
Mark 5:31–32 CSB
31 His disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing against you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’ ” 32 But he was looking around to see who had done this.
It was almost a disgust from the disciples. How could you care about one, when so many people are touching you?How can you know about the needs of individuals in a crowd like this? They were with Him all the time, but they continue to fail to realize that Jesus is interested on the individual and not the masses. For Jesus: It wasn’t a group of twelve; it was a group of individuals. It wasn’t a crowd of people, it was individuals.Their lack of faith was the fact that they lost sight of the individual.Their lack of being able to perceive the question was because they got lost in the enthusiasm of the crowd and missed the need of the person.
Application
2 quick Applications:
Jesus is interested in your personal need. You are not a group of peopleYou are a group of individualsHe cares deeply for every single one of you.Don’t get lost in the crowdLove and care for others like Jesus diddon’t bag everyone the same.We are all individuals.

4. What you see is what you get faith!

Explanation
Messenger The messenger from Jairus’s house, who arrive on the scene in inadequate faith.
Mark 4:35–36 CSB
35 On that day, when evening had come, he told them, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the sea.” 36 So they left the crowd and took him along since he was in the boat. And other boats were with him.
This man represents those whose faith is always limited on the basis of what we can see.We see a negative influence of distorted faith. What you see is all you get.Why trouble the Master any further? Why go on with this quest for a Healer, the girl is dead.
Application
There are many of us that walk into this category. We do not have a clear vision of what Christ is and what He can do.We call it realismJesus calls it a lack of faith. We give up too soon.We can not look out to the immense possibilities of Jesus, but we take our reading from these kinds of people.(usually the loudest) This are the people you should ignore(avoid)you will get dragged down with them.

5. Affirmative Faith

Explanation
Peter, James, and John
Mark 5:37 CSB
37 He did not let anyone accompany him except Peter, James, and John, James’s brother.
Jesus took an inner circle of faithful disciples, He could trust with Him, into a despair infected home.He allowed no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John.
Why?
Why didn’t he take Thomas with him?Because the miracles of the Lord could not be done in the presence of doubt. There must be an atmosphere of faith, an affirmative atmosphere for a miracle of God to be done.
Application
If the “what you see is what you get” people is what you avoidThe Affirmative people is what you seek.
I know what you thinking. You need to have a balance of both. Let me ask you this:
When your kids are acting up? When your marriage is on the rocks or over? When you have bad news from the doctor? When you lost your job? What kind of person do you want to go to battle with?
I want to have with me the people that believe that we can take on the fire of hell with a water gun.
Why do you think we spend time in worship? Why do you think we prepare our hearts in expectancy?Where there is expectancy, the power of God can work freely.
Peter, James, and John provided the expectancy of faith. It was affirmative.

6. Know it all faith

Explanation
Faithlessness. This is similar to what you see is what you get. The professional mourners and their lack of faith.
Mark 5:38–40 CSB
38 They came to the leader’s house, and he saw a commotion—people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep.” 40 They laughed at him, but he put them all outside. He took the child’s father, mother, and those who were with him, and entered the place where the child was.
These mourners in this story were so intent on grief, that they could not make way for grace. When Jesus said the child was not dead but sleeping.Their weeping turned into ridicule. Their laughter exposed the tragedy of the know it all faith. They looked at God in the flash and laughed at him because they knew better than Him.
Application
This is tragic and shows a heart that is almost beyond all hope.I say almost because I truly believe that until we die none of us are beyond the hope of redemption. This sadly is the faith of most of the WOKE movement we see.We know it all, don’t you dare bring God into the conversation.Wether is abortion, sexuality, race, violence. We know best and we laugh at any attempt to bring God into the equation.

7. Influenced Faith

Explanation
The influence of others’ faith. The little girl herself.
Mark 5:41–43 CSB
41 Then he took the child by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum” (which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, get up”). 42 Immediately the girl got up and began to walk. (She was twelve years old.) At this they were utterly astounded. 43 Then he gave them strict orders that no one should know about this and told them to give her something to eat.
She was the recipient of the influence of others. He took her by the hand and said, “Little girl get up.” The words imply tenderness, almost as if He used her nickname. Here we have a little girl that received healing at the mercy of God through the prayers of others based on the gift of faith.
Application
No one who has come along at all has arrived without the investment of faith of others.I could not preach.I could not pray.I could not be what I am if it was not for the investment of faith of my mother-in-law, my father-in-law, my wife, my friends, and my teachers. This is the faith of a mother, grandmother, father a church begging God for the salvation of their kids.
Have you ever wondered what might have happened if you had not prayed for people?
This little girl was the recipient of faith and she received it.

8. Perfect Faith

Explanation
The supreme example of faith, Jesus Here is faith as it was meant to be lived, never in a hurry, time for people, wide open to God’s power,a flow of healing miraclesa limitless source of wisdom and vision. Notice His commanding presence throughout this whole passage. Look at Him:when He first assures Jairuswhen He gives peace to the womenwhen He confronts the doubt of the messengersobserve Him in Jairus’s home.He is the Master of the situationas He banishes the wailers, selects His confident prayer circle to go into the little girl’s room and commands for her to get up from her sleep. This is the kind of picture of faith available to you and me.Not a faith that is panicked, That feels that the world is out of controlthat everybody is doing me inbut a faith that has a confidence, a knowledge in the power of God that overrulesin a God that desires to give good gifts.
