INTRO: On Netflix there is a show that I have come to really enjoy called Alone. In the show they drop ten people off in different isolated parts of a remote part of the world northern Vancouver Island, British Columbia and Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories of Canada. They literally have to survive with only ten items they brought with them for as long as they can alone in the wilderness. they have to scavenge for food and build shelter and survive the extreme conditions. Whats so amazing about the show to me is not so much the physical toll that it takes on the people (and it takes a huge toll with a lot of the contestants being medically unfit to continue) but the mental one. They go thru such a wide range of emotions and everything in their life kind of gets laid out right and front of them and they have deal with it and there is no one else so everything they do alone and they miss their families and friends. The effects of being alone are unreal. the emotional spiritual and physical impact is more than they can bear after a certain point. The max number of days anyone has made was 86 days.
So what why tells us about this show? Being alone is rough! The one thing while watching this show that kept hitting me over and over was...
Genesis 2:18 NASB95
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.”
We were not meant to be alone. We are social beings. Yes even the most introverted of all of us needs some type of interaction with others. And I bet with all this Covid stuff and everything else going on in your life some of you may feel alone. How can anyone feel alone with all these people around. We stay in our homes. We self isolate and we pump in all this nonsense on the news and we begin to feel as if the world is falling down on top of us. There have been many who have felt alone even in the Bible.
1 Kings 19:14–16 NASB95
Then he said, “I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars and killed Your prophets with the sword. And I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.” The Lord said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus, and when you have arrived, you shall anoint Hazael king over Aram; and Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place.
David feels alone at times
Psalm 12:1 NASB95
Help, Lord, for the godly man ceases to be, For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men.
There are times where we feel that we are the only standing for truth, that we are the only one reaching out we are the only ones left defending the faith. and usually those are all untrue statements.
there times that we feel alone in our sins.
there are times when death comes creeping in and we feel alone.
What when you face judgment?
Romans 14:10 NASB95
But you, why do you judge your brother? Or you again, why do you regard your brother with contempt? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.
2 Corinthians 5:10 NASB95
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
unless you have Jesu you will stand all alone. Do yo have Jesu this morning as your advocate have you believed confessed repented and been washed by the blood of jesus thru baptism.
1 John 2:1-2
1 John 2:1–2 NASB95
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.
No matter what we God is there. We always have a friend in Jesus. He will never leave us or forsake us. We are not alone.
WHERE NO ONE STANDS ALONE
C. History Of The Hymn:
1. It’s author was Mosie Lister.
2. He wrote hymns from age 17; he wrote over 500 hymns.
3. He was an accomplished hymn writer who had written very popular hymns entitled:
a. “How Long Has It Been?”
b. “‘Til The Storm Passes By”
3. He loved coming up with hymn ideas and lyrics when he was driving.
4. In 1955 he was driving alone down the highway in northern GA; he began to sing these words: “Hold my hand all the way, Every hour, every day, From here to the great unknown; Take my hand, Let me stand, Where no one stands alone.”
5. He kept this chorus in his mind and sang it for over a year; however, he had no verses.
6. The impetus for the verses: He thought of David in Ps. 27 when he wrote “Hide not your face from me.
Once I stood in the night With my head bowed low In the darkness as black as could be And my heart felt alone and I cried Oh Lord, don't hide your face from me (13:1)
Like a king I may live in a palace so tall With great riches to call my own But I don't know a thing In this whole wide world That's worse than being alone
Hold my hand all the way Every hour, every day Come here to the great unknown
Take my hand, let me stand Where no one stands alone
Take my hand, let me stand Where no one stands alone
Psalm 142 Alone in a cave and can feel the toll that tis having on him and he cries out to God. Listen as I read
Psalm 142 NASB95
Maskil of David, when he was in the cave. A Prayer. I cry aloud with my voice to the Lord; I make supplication with my voice to the Lord. I pour out my complaint before Him; I declare my trouble before Him. When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, You knew my path. In the way where I walk They have hidden a trap for me. Look to the right and see; For there is no one who regards me; There is no escape for me; No one cares for my soul. I cried out to You, O Lord; I said, “You are my refuge, My portion in the land of the living. “Give heed to my cry, For I am brought very low; Deliver me from my persecutors, For they are too strong for me. “Bring my soul out of prison, So that I may give thanks to Your name; The righteous will surround me, For You will deal bountifully with me.”
The reality of the matter is this We are never alone. When we feel alone we must call out to God. Pray to Him, talk with Him, share with Him you stuggles. The point of the song is Hold my hand all the way Every hour, every day Come here to the great unknown. Every single day walk with God holding his hand. PRACTICE GODS PRESENCE! I don’t know if you have to literally picture Him walking hand in hand with you. I have known people who literally talk to God as if he was sitting in the seat next to them on the way to work.
You will feel alone if you don’t walk and talk with him each day. If you are not every single day working on your relationship with Him you will continue to have the ups and downs and feelings of being alone.
And He walks with me, and He talks with me, And He tells me I am His own, And the joy we share as we tarry there, None other has ever known.
How can we Practice God’s Presence unless we read and study and talk with him each day.
It’s the faithful Christian who is holding on to His hand and walking with him each day. its the faithful christian who can say as the Psalmist says
Psalm 23:4 NASB95
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
Hebrews 13:5–6 NASB95
Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,” so that we confidently say, The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?”
Matthew 28:20 NASB95
teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
In God’s Family!
1. Christians MUST understand the “family concept” of the Lord’s Church.
2. That means they must NEVER sit idly by and wait for others to do all the reaching out to them.
3. That means that Christians must reach out to other Christians when they need emotional support.
4. We are with people of similar conviction, faith, and love for Jesus!
5. We are with people who are commanded to “Love one another!” 6. No one stands alone if ENGAGED in the Church!
