Paul begins Galatians 3 by talking about the blessings that come from faith
Gen 12; Gen 15; Gen 17; Gen 18 — blessed by faith
Paul — law-free gospel
Agitators — law-essential gospel
Paul — faith brings blessing and life; law brings curse and death.
Galatians 3:10–14 ESV
10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” 12 But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.
Deuteronomy 27:26 ESV
26 “ ‘Cursed be anyone who does not confirm the words of this law by doing them.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
Habakkuk 2:4 ESV
4 “Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith.
This passage is quoted in Romans 1:17 and Hebrews 10:38… and here in Galatians 3:11
Leviticus 18:5 ESV
5 You shall therefore keep my statutes and my rules; if a person does them, he shall live by them: I am the Lord.
Follow Paul’s line of thinking:
Those who place their faith and confidence in Jesus are put in right-standing with God and are blessed in the line of Abraham.
But those who live by the law are expected to do ALL the law… if you break any of it are cursed for having broken any/all of it.
Because a person cannot keep it all, those who aim to live by it are cursed — this is why those Abraham and all in his lineage (including Moses) lived and live by faith. (Hab 2.4)
This relationship between blessing and curse is found in several places in the OT — no where more clearly than Deuteronomy; so it is no surprise Paul quotes from Deut.
Deut 28:1-14 — blessing
Deut 28:15-68 — curses
In Gal 3:13 we come to the money...
Galatians 3:13 ESV
13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—
Deuteronomy 21:23 ESV
23 his body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you shall bury him the same day, for a hanged man is cursed by God. You shall not defile your land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.
All who break the law are cursed… Jesus — who authored and perfected living and dying by faith — absorbed by faith the sting that comes on all who live by the law.
2 Corinthians 5:14–21 ESV
14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. 16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Jesus death by faith — becoming cursed on the tree by becoming sin — did so by faith:
Galatians 3:14 ESV
14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.
Living dutifully under the law brings death; living by faith in Jesus brings life in the Spirit.
Hebrews 10:19–25 ESV
19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
These days — it’s unclear how we should do these things with one another:
Let us draw near with a true heart and full assurance of faith
With open hearts
Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope.
Let us stir up one another to good deeds...
Not to Neglect meeting together, as is the habit of some, but encourage one another — the day of his return is near.
