Mary Wept

Her Brother Lazarus is dead
and buried 4 days
the ones who love the family are there to mourn and comfort
they alternate going to the grave and back to the house
Martha, Marys sister, has seen and talked with Jesus
she then went home to tell Mary- this is where we pick it up today
V 32- Mary fell at Jesus feet and cried, only if...
she was full of grief and it bubbled up again to the surface when She saw Jesus

The Troubling Of Jesus

V 33 Jesus was agitated, indignant, or moved deeply with an involuntary groan when he saw the crying and mourning
why was He troubled?
maybe it’s the fact that sin and death are real
that satan has deceived and cause fear
that they see death as permanent
or is it that they did not believe the message that was sent
or the troubling was caused by the grief his friends were experiencing
whatever the reason. Jesus was deeply troubled
V 34 where have you laid him?
and when He gets there...

Jesus Wept

V 35 Tears flowing silent crying
V 36 the mourners observe
the love for Lazarus
V 37 they exclaim the incapability of Jesus doing anything
the lack of belief of Lazarus being raised
maybe their glee that the great Jesus has met His match and lost
Why did Jesus weep?
He is acquainted with grief
Isaiah 53:3 AV
3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Jesus has experienced
sorrow
grief,
despised,
persecuted,
rejected by His people
been tempted in every way
angry
Jesus is truly a man, his emotions were on full display
in all of these he was yet without sin
He knows what it is to be human, in every way. because He is
Why did Jesus weep?
He knew what he was going to do
knew the joy they would be experiencing
Jesus was associating himself with their grief
Empathy
The sentiment behind empathy is often presented in the familiar idiom to put (oneself) in another's shoes.
sympathy sometimes starts the response to another’s hurt, with the words “well at least”
Jesus was grieving with His friend Mary
Sympathy wants to fix the problem, make person feel better
sympathy removes oneself from their emotion
instead of just feeling sorry for someone
we need to be like Jesus and put make ourselves understand and live their hurt
Jesus, God, through whom the creation was made feels our sorrow, and pain
the pain and sorrow that sin in general has brought upon us
not necessarily the sin we commit, then He grieves because we are in sin
Jesus told Saul on the road to Damascus, Jesus asked him why are you persecuting me?

Our Tears

Jesus responds to our tears
our heart breaks, confession,
Job 34:28 AV
28 So that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto him, and he heareth the cry of the afflicted.
Psalm 6:8 AV
8 Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity; for the LORD hath heard the voice of my weeping.
Psalm 34:15 AV
15 The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.

Spurgeon wrote: “No prayer will ever prevail with God more surely than a liquid petition, which, being distilled from the heart, trickles from the eye, and waters the cheek. Then is God won when he hears the voice of your weeping.

When our prayers to God are accompanied by our tears God is moved
Jesus wept with Mary then He raised Lazarus from the dead
this world is filled with tears, weeping.
we have a savior that knows
we have a Savior that empathizes with us
we have a Savior that saves

All Tears Are Wiped Away

Psalm 126:5 AV
5 They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.
our prayers, our confessions
Knowing we are forgiven , and our sin has been separated from us
1 John 1:9 AV
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
and for those who believe and put their trust in Jesus
Revelation 21:2–4 AV
2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. 4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
