2020 is a little half over. So far, it has been a banner year hasn’t it?
Chaotic times.
Pandemic.
Deaths of friends and loved ones.
Natural disasters.
What does all this mean?
When stuff starts happening around us that we have never experienced before, we can become a bit nervous.
The Bible speaks much about these type of situations and how we can be reassured. The Bible mentions, for example, many instances of earthquakes.
Moses experienced an earthquake when God passed by him on the mountain side.
Elijah felt the same when the Lord’s presence passed by.
There was mention of an earthquake when Jesus was crucified.
Paul and Silas were singing hymns in prison when an earthquake was so violent that it broke their chains and opened their prison doors.
Was God passing though Sparta Sunday morning? Was there someone praying that needed to be released?
Here are a few reminders:
Psalm 46:1–3 NIV84
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. Selah
Vs. 1 is a statement of confidence for those that are called the saints of God. You and I as believers are called SAINTS OF GOD.
Psalm 30:4 NIV84
Sing to the Lord, you saints of his; praise his holy name.
Psalm 34:9 NIV84
Fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing.
Psalm 116:15 NIV84
Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.
God is our refuge and His saints can rest in His place of trust.
Psalm 2:12 NIV84
Kiss the Son, lest he be angry and you be destroyed in your way, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
What a reminder that God is unchanging and in Him alone we can find shelter.
He is our STRENGTH. He is mighty.
What a reminder that God empowers the weak not just to sustain but we are empowered for action.
He is “an ever-present help in trouble.” God is close by.
Isaiah 55:6 NIV84
Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near.
He is ENOUGH. We need nothing else because He is big enough for the situation we face and we can find our security in Him.
Psalm 102:25 NIV84
In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.
Psalm 104:5–9 NIV84
He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved. You covered it with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. But at your rebuke the waters fled, at the sound of your thunder they took to flight; they flowed over the mountains, they went down into the valleys, to the place you assigned for them. You set a boundary they cannot cross; never again will they cover the earth.
As a result, we will not fear. No matter how bad the earth shakes, how high the waters get, or whatever we face.
Romans 8:31 NIV84
What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Three reminders I have thought about during the course of this week of an earthquake and other “earthquake like shaking” news:
God is in control. He always has been, always will be.
God is conducting on our behalf.
God is calling us to follow Him.
What is so big in your life right now that is causing you to not remember these things?
