The Promised Divine King

Introduction
Birth Announcements: Didn’t Know that was a thing til right before we had Levi.
Gender Reveal Parties, Birth Announcements, Baby Moon’s.

Main Idea: Isaiah predicts and proclaims the arrival of the Promised Divine King.

Promised Deliverer (v. 1-2)

Isaiah 8:21–22 ESV
They will pass through the land, greatly distressed and hungry. And when they are hungry, they will be enraged and will speak contemptuously against their king and their God, and turn their faces upward. And they will look to the earth, but behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish. And they will be thrust into thick darkness.
The people of God were living in darkness.
They were without hope b/c they were under God’s judgement for their disobedience.
They had rejected God. They were removed from fellowship b/c of this rejection.
Darkness and distress were their calling card.
Anguish was their mindest. They were destitute and destroyed.
BUT GOD...
Let’s look at 9:1-2
Isaiah 9:1–2 ESV
But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.

Promised Deliverer (v. 1-2)

After speaking about all the doom and gloom that is caused by the rejection of God and his statutes, we see the beautiful promise that there will be a Light in the Darkness.
Isaiah 9:1 ESV
But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.
Former Time Brought Contempt /Latter Time making glorious
Zebulun and Naphtali were the reviled.
They represented those that rejected God and were the first to be conquered by foreign invaders.
Lived nearer to the gentile nations.
Most influenced by false religions and foreign cultures.
Galilee of the Nations (Gentiles)
Those who God had not revealed himself to.
All of those who were not of Jewish (Israelite) descent.
This area will the be the one that even though there is a huge pagan influence will receive the “light”.
They will be amongst the first to be illuminated.
This tiny, insignificant, broken and evil area will be the starting point of God’s glorious Illumination.
He is going to make this area glorious for his name sake.
No one can claim this for their own except God himself.
Genesis 12:3 ESV
I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
God is fulfilling his promise to Abraham to bring the nations to himself. Not just Israel, but all peoples.
Isaiah 9:2 ESV
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.
The Darkness that has plagued humanity from the beginning will be revealed for what it really is.
Light will shine and make all apparent.
Jesus Began His ministry in and amongst the people of Galilee
First Miracle in Galilee-Water to Wine
He became an unquenchable radiating light in the dark world
Matthew 4:12–17 ESV
Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.” From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Promised Deliverer (v. 1-2)

It wasn’t just a light that was revealed, but THE LIGHT.
The Light calls for us to Repent and Believe, b/c God’s Glorious Kingdom is at hand.
To be delivered from the darkness there is need to repent and turn to the light.
The Light is the Promised Deliverer.
Removing the anguish. Removing the doom. Removing the gloom and bringing into the light.

Promised Conqueror (v. 3-5)

Isaiah 9:3–5 ESV
You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil. For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire.

Promised Conqueror (v. 3-5)

What does this conqueror do?
Multiplies the Nation
No Longer is the message of salvation for the Israelites it is now for all.
Concludes the promise in Gen. 17:5
Genesis 17:5 ESV
No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.
God is calling all people to himself through the giving of Jesus. That everyone will know the goodness of the God that Saves.
Brings over powering Joy to the nations.
Isaiah 9:3 ESV
You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil.
Joy:
What Kind of Joy Does God Bring?
Joy of the harvest
Food a plenty
Provision
Needs Met
Joy of Victory
Enemy has been defeated
They are no longer under oppression. No Longer under rule of a tyrant king.
They have victory, but they weren’t the victors, God was, is, and ever will be
So far in this text God has provided multiplied nations, overwhelming joy. Now we are going to see that this promised conqueror will provide a supernatural complete victory over the enemy.
Isaiah 9:4–5 ESV
For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire.

Promised Conqueror (v. 3-5)

This promised Conqueror is coming to completely over come all that suppresses and oppresses his people.
He is Going to break the yoke, staff, and rod of the enemy.
He is going to do it as on the day of Midian.
Midian- Judges 6-7
Midianites were abundant in number. “they would come like locusts in number” (6:5)
They would “devour the produce of the land… leave no sustenance for Israel. (6:4)
Gideon’s army whittled from 22,000 to 300.
Set with the task of defeating this massive army. With Trumpets.
An impossible task…for Gideon and his army.
So God stepped in and without the Israelites having to strike a man the army wins.
Judges 7:22 ESV
When they blew the 300 trumpets, the Lord set every man’s sword against his comrade and against all the army. And the army fled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath.

Promised Conqueror (v. 3-5)

God is going to provide a supernatural overcoming of the enemy such as on that day.
Conquering an enemy that is overwhelming, overpowered, and seemingly unconquerable.
That enemy is Sin.
It is oppressive. It is overpowering. We are unable to overcome it’s power and effects.
But the Promised Conqueror will destroy the power of sin and death.
The Promised Conqueror is calling the nations to himself, and bringing them joy because he has utterly destroyed the enemy.
Transition: This promised one is not just a deliverer, not just a conqueror, He is also the Promised King.

Promised King (v. 6-7)

Isaiah 9:6–7 ESV
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
This is an extremely popular text at Christmas and reveals a lot about the Promised King to come:
It reveals that he is both God and man.
Reveals that he is bringing his own kingdom.
Reveals his character and attributes
Reveals his reason for coming.
Isaiah 9:6 ESV
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
First: He is both God and man:
Child is born. He is of flesh and bone. He enters into this world. He is real.
There are those who believe that Jesus was only spirit, but this text and the whole of Scripture reveals to us that he is 100% Man and 100% God.
He is given to us. He is a gift that we don’t deserve, but is given anyway.
This is not an accident or happenstance. He is purposefully provided for us.
He is the perfect gift that brings us from gloom to glory, from darkness to light, from oppression to victory, from chaos to peace.
He is bringing his own government.
He is going to establish, uphold, and rule his own form of government.
He is establishing his own Kingdom. Ruled by his Perfect Character
His Perfect Character consists of
Wonderful Counselor
He is perfectly wise. He is the source of wisdom.
He doesn’t seek wisdom outside himself. He doesn’t need input from outside sources.
He provides wise counsel to those who seek him.
Isaiah 28:29 ESV
This also comes from the Lord of hosts; he is wonderful in counsel and excellent in wisdom.
Isaiah 9:6 ESV
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Mighty God
Great in power. Great in stature. Great in might.
He is God. Equal to God
No other person ever has God’s name and God is never called Moses, Abram, David, or Jeremiah, so there must be something very special about this son that causes him to have God’s name.
Everlasting Father.
His reign will be forever.
No other kingdom, government, or empire has ever ruled everlastingly.
Longest Empiric Reign was 1850 years. Long Time but not forever.
As his kingdom will know no end he is fatherly in character.
He cares for and protects his people.
He has a relationship with his people.
He loves his people
Prince of Peace
Shalom-Wholeness Completeness
Restoration of what is broken
Total well-being
He is one that restores what is broken.
The Brokenness of Sin
The Brokenness of Relationships
with one another
with God
John 14:27 ESV
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
Romans 5:1 ESV
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
We can be in a relationship with this Divine King b/c he gives us peace.
Isaiah 9:7 ESV
Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
The announcement of this Divine King shows us that there is no end to his goodness and peace.
It will continue to expand until Christ’s Second Advent.
And even when Christ Comes again each day we will learn to love him more. We will feel the continued presence of his wisdom, strength, care, and peace.
Who is doing this?
The Lord of Hosts. The Triune God Eternal.
Some like to look at the reality of Christ’s sacrifice and deem it Divine Child Abuse.
But what we see from the scriptures is that Jesus was willingly part of the plan.
He wasn’t forced to endure the cross, but that he willingly gave himself up for the peace that surpasses all understanding.
For Reconciliation, For Restoration, For Redemption.

The Promised Divine King

Conclusion

Do you know this Jesus that came as a babe and lived the perfect life? Do you know about his Sacrifice?
That He died so that you may live.
If you don’t, He is calling out to you answer him.
If you do, remember that you have access to the Divine King. That you are loved by the Divine King. That He cares about you.
You should tell others about the peace you have found. Spread his peace. Spread his love. Walk in his Light.
