That Same Day Verses 1-3a

A rough day
Some of the recent events that Jesus has encountered
Accusations of breaking the Sabbath
Called a demon after healing a demon-oppressed man
The scribes and Pharisees demand to see a sign
Matthew 12:46–50 ESV
While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him. But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
John 7:5 ESV
For not even his brothers believed in him.
His family thought that He was out of His mind
After Jesus says, “My family is whoever does the will of my Father.” He gives us this parable
Jesus is going to reveal that there are only two kinds of people
Those who believe in Jesus and have eternal life
And those who don’t

The Sower 3,4,18,19

Who is the sower?
Matthew 13:37 ESV
He answered, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man.
The immediate context of the passage has Jesus as the one spreading the seed
What is being sown?
Seed in the story
As far as the natural side of the story goes
But what about the supernatural side?
The word of the kingdom
When anyone hears
You don’t hear seed
But a person can hear the word of the kingdom
Verse 19 says that it is what has been sown in the heart of the person
This is the gospel
Luke says specifically that, “the seed is the word of God.”
The seed falls on four different kinds of soil
Jesus tells the parable in verses 3-8
Along the path
On rocky ground
Among thorns
On good soil
And He explains it to His disciples in verses 18-23

Along the Path 4,19

The seed cannot sink in
This is the hard packed dirt of the path
This soil is impenetrable
Jesus explains that this is the one who hears the word of the kingdom and doesn’t understand it
2 Corinthians 4:3–4 ESV
And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
Birds devoured them
The evil one
Satan is the one who snatches away
Mark says Satan, Luke says the devil and Matthew calls him the evil one
2 Corinthians 4 uses the term god of this world
The result
Refer back to the passage in 2 Corinthians 4
It is veiled or hid from those who are perishing
The word translated as veiled or hid is KALUPTO
It has a root word that means to steal - KLEPTO
Jesus said that the evil one snatches away
What does that mean practically?
When the word of God and specifically the gospel is presented to them they cannot understand it
It is stolen away and kept covered by the devil
The Devil wants to keep them from having their eyes opened
And what is our response to this?
We can look around the world and we see nothing but godlessness
And we have a tendency to get outraged at the behavior that we see
But are we horrified that these people are perishing?

Rocky Ground 5,6,20,21

They did not have much soil
This describes ground that has a layer of what would appear to be good soil
But underneath it is
Immediately they sprang up
The result

Among Thorns 7,22

The thorns grew up and choked them out
Thorns will always grow
The result

Good Soil 8,23

The one who hears and understands
He indeed bears fruit

Two Things to Take Away

What kind of soil are you?
What are we doing with the seed?
The end result
